Coming Home

“Life’s a journey that’s homeward bound.”
by Herman Melville

And so after a month of traveling throughout the beautiful country of MEXICO, I am back in my home country… in my most favorite city in the world, MANHATTAN!! As much as I love blowing off and being in a place that is so ultimately different that the only thing I can find familiar is a Coca-Cola, there is nothing that feels as good as coming home. I have been in the city for 2 days now and there is something so wonderful about the energy of this place. It really feels all-consuming. There are so many cultural outlets and it feels like around every corner you find a beautiful piece of self-expression. When I’m here, it truly feels like I am home!

But, enough about the Big Apple for now! I must update you on my adventures in MEXICO!!!!

What an absolutely rich and exciting country. There is this pride and culture that oozes out of the people of this place! I had great plans of blogging and capturing every day while I was on the trip, but I honestly had very little access to my computer. I have decided to give you all a recap over the next couple of blog entries. And, once I go through my favorite pics, I will throw those up as well. That way you all can have a visual frame of reference for my stories.

Ok, so I’ll start with our first leg of the trip, MEXICO CITY. What an unbelievable place! There’s something like 25 million people, all cohabiting in one space. It’s so incredibly exciting and overwhelming all at once. When we arrived, we were greeted by our good friend, Yuri and her aunt and uncle. After speaking to them for less than 2 minutes we were officially adopted and from then on they were our Mexican Tio and Tia (uncle and aunt). We jumped into their van and went on a little architectural tour of Mexico City.

It is such a visually stimulating place. The buildings are everything from Aztec and Mayan to French and Spanish, and because Mexico City was built on a lagoon, the city is sinking. So, you will be driving along, look to your right, and see what looks like a 15th century cathedral being swallowed, slowly by the ground. It was such a trip! The next day, after we settled into our beautiful downtown apartment, we decided to go to the city center square, the Zocalo! There is a gorgeous cathedral on one side of the square and the President’s Palace on another. There are other big gorgeous buildings on the other two sides as well. It was Sunday when we went; the whole square was filled with people protesting different things, Aztec shamans cleansing people with sage and incense, different natives doing ritual dances for the Virgin Mary, and families watching and enjoying each other and the happenings. It was a total sensory overload! I was in cultural heaven!

After spending the day wandering around the city and enjoying the sights and smells, we went with Tia and Tio and the rest of the family to a fabulous Japanese restaurant. Now, I am not usually an advocate of trying food that is not native to the place I am visiting, but I am so glad I bent my rules to accommodate this place. The soy sauce had chili in it! It had Mexican sushi!!!! So good! I love how every culture has its own take on all the different world cultures… it is so fascinating. I know for myself that I often forget that “my way” is not the true “authentic” way all the time…everyone has their own slants and opinions. It’s what makes the world go round! And so, with our bellies filled with sushi, our noses filled with incense and sage, and our minds spinning with traditional folk dancing and shaman tributes, we went back to the apartment to rest up for our big adventure the following day. Yuri and Tia had planned a nice little road trip to the second largest Aztec ruins in all of Mexico, Teotihuacán!

Stay tuned for adventures and opinions of the amazing Aztecs! Hopefully I will have my photos sorted out for you all by the next entry! I am still sorting out how to handle my mac! Ok all! So nice to be back and thanks for all the continued support!

Ciao
Allison

    Hello everyone!

First of all. Allison, if you are reading this, I hope you had a wonderful time in Mexico. It’s a place full of enchantment and magic because of the mixture of three cultures: The Prehispanic, The Colonial (La Colonia) and The Contemporary era. Not to mention the influence of spanish, french and american cultures.

Mexico City is actually sinking. That’s true. Altough it was not built over a lagoon, actually it was founded over Lake Texcoco (Lago de Texcoco) according to the Aztec tradition, the aztecs where supposed to built a city where ever they saw an eagle eating a snake on top of a cactus (nopal)… unfortunally for the aztecs, they found the eagle over a lake. That’s why they built the city (called Aztlan) on a body of water.

Allison, people… If by any reason you decide to come and visit Mexico, I fully recomend these cities.

    BEACHES:
On the Pacific Ocean: Higher waves.
Acapulco, Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, Huatulco.

On the Gulf of Mexico: Lower waves. Best for fishing.
    Tampico, Veracruz.

    Caribean: Enigmatic waters.
    Cancun/Xcaret/Playa del Carmen.

COLONIAL CITIES: See the Spanish legacy.
San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Queretaro, Leon, Morelia, Guadalajara.

    MY PERSONAL FAVORITE: MONTERREY.

Monterrey, located just 200 miles south of the border from Laredo or McAllen, Texas is a mixture of colonial and industrial themes. It’s a beautiful and modern city surrounded by mountains. The Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Mountain, cause it looks like a saddle) it’s the one that steals your eyesight. Since it’s located on the Sierra Madre mountain range it has outdoor activities like rock climbing, speleism, kajaking, rappeling, cave exploration, bungee jumping, skydiving, parachuting… you name it!.

Monterrey is the third largest city, after Mexico and Guadalajara, but the first city in living standards. Because of that, there are several shopping malls available.

To take a stroll or a walk in a park, you can do it on the Macroplaza, the biggest plaza in the world. It has the size of 5 “Zocalo’s” remember? the one that Allison mentioned? Or tour the Parque Fundidora, a park that was built on an actual siderurgic industry place.

Log on to> http://www.nl.gob.mx/turismo for more info on Monterrey.
    or

    http://www.visitmexico.com/wb/Visitmexico/Visi_Nuevo_leon

Like Allison fell in love with Mexico City, I fell in love with Monterrey.

    Thanks for reading me!

    Hi Allison!

So great to hear that your travels went well and that you were able to expose yourself to different worlds and customs. I am sure that all of it is refreshing and gives you a new and ecclectic perspective on life!

It’s great that Mexico has its own spin on sushi because the Paksitanis have their own spin on Chinese food! I am Pakistani American and I have to say, Pakistani Chinese food is good! It’s spicy :-)

Anyway, glad to have you back and looking forward to hearing more about your travels!

I have always respected you as an actress and I just want to say to keep up the exceptional and genuine work!

I’m glad that you had a great trip! I have family in Mexico City, so I know what you mean, describing the country. It is so embedded with culture everywhere you look.
I don’t think I mentioned it before. but the season finale was pretty good. I can’t wait until next season starts, although I’m sure that you would like your vacation to last a bit longer!LOL

    hola allison,
i am not from mexico i am french ,anyway i just want to say that you are a fabulous actress .
your blog is very great and interresting because you talk about all of your trips (i travel a lot too and i love visiting the countries and knowing cultures of each one of them ).
oh! i almost forgot i find two philosophical quotes ( if you want to put them in your blog you can ):
“i’ll trade all of my tomorrows for a single yesterday”(it’s extracted from a book)
“the greatest thing you will never learn is just to love and to be love in return”(moulin rouge)
i think you are a fabulous actress and you pretend to be a very great person in reality (and i know you are)…
    i make you plenty kisses
    lorène
ps: for your next trip i can advise you :france (surprising isn’t it?especially coming to a french girl)
i can suggest in particular “la manche” (west cost), cherbourg,la hague (i am sure you would love and kristin kreuk too). landscapes are beautiful and you can walk in small ways close to the sea .(no no i don’t make publicity !!!!!!!)
    ciao ciao
    and have a nice day
    All the best

  • Jodie

Sounds like you have a wonderful adventure in Mexico, and who thought, Mexican Sushi! Just goes to show how much the world is actually shrinking!LOL
NYC has been on my wishlist of places to visit. There always seems to be an energy surrounding the city that can’t be found anywhere else.
I enjoy your blog Allison, travel safe and look forward to reading more of your travels.

    Hello Allison!

I would lke write that message to you personaly, but because this is imposible….

At first, sorry for my bad and poor English – i’m not a Shakespire and even better, I’m from Slovenia – “google it”, Slovenia is one of most beautiful places in Europe and if you like traveling, you’ll like it. If you’ll ever come, contact me ;)

I’m not some crazy fan, I just saw you on smallville and I really think, you are the best actress in this show. The think is, I’m not some sort of a guy, who become a fan of an actress becase she lives in America and has big boobs. :D And no, i’m not gay. :) Well, “Chloe” is very cool, she looks like a good persone, friend and human. i know that is just a character, but you must be similare to her. I know my post has many mistakes – i speak english much better then write but… Would it really be imposible, to get your mail or even e-mail message from you? :)

    Wish you all the best,
    Miha First

Wow, you really love to travel Allision.. as for me, i just like going to my cottage, its perfect, i don’t really need culture and all that, all i need is my lake and my fishies! I think my family is planning a trip to new york though.. ew. You should totally visit Scugog Lake! its ausome! Its so homy and relaxing, with tons of sun and other great fun things to do. Im heading up there now so, bybye for now Chloe Sullivan! U better be okay..or im saying goodbye to the show, but u will be, of course. Anyways, do another blog soon! im hungry.. peanut butter and oreos! yes! try that!

  • http://www.onebigumbrella.com MK

Afraid I don’t share your enthusiasm for NY but totally agree with the quote you chose for this entry. I’ve found in my own travels that the more I explore other places, the closer I get to myself – and the more I realize that where I am is home.

That being said, I’m really enjoying reading about your Mexican adventure. I’ll probably never get to journey there myself, and to read about it with your obvious excitement is a pure pleasure.

  • http://NONE TRIPP WATSON

Hey there Allison, i just had a question, not sure if you will get this, i saw a woman, in granbury, Texas, oh it was around middle of june, she was drivinh a hummer, and was wearing soem red shorts and a dive cozamel t-shirt, and i would swear it was you, there cannot be that many women in the world with that glowing gorgeous smile, I saw this woman ta a little gas station/store i haul for the oilfield in my truck and trailer and had pulled in to get a soda, and she was pumping gas, Well i was just curious if that was you or not, either way all i can say is WOW, that woman has been in my dreams since, LOL and if it was you thanks for the smile and wave, made my day

Thank you for taking the time to share your travels and experiences with us. We really appreciate it.

    Best regards.

Very Cool. Soy Sauce with Chilies, that’s dynamite! It’s neat to read of your adventures. If you filmed them, they’d be cooler then the Travel Channel. It’s great that you try so many things.
Maybe someday, if I can ever get one of my designs backed I’ll be able to travel and enjoy what you do. As of now though, I’ll be working with the children at camp, something I really enjoy.

    Hi there,

I’m a new guest at your blog, but will try to be a regular attendant : ) I’m familiar with you, as many are, through Smallville.

Anyways sound like you had a good time. My sister visited Mexico, she got the circle calendar thing. Did you bring anything back? I do find it interesting that Mexico City is a sinking one, how long has it been around? does it keep on sinking? perhaps a quick search will answer my questions.

Hope you have a good time back at home.

    Best Regards,
    Douten

    Hey Allison,
It’s good to have you back. Glad you had such a great trip. I’ve always wanted to go to Mexico and see all the ancient ruins. I echo everyone’s thoughts on missing smallville. I’m really interested in seeing more of the storyline. Keep us posted!!!

    Hey Allison!

I just want to say that I love reading about all of your adventures and opinions. The focus as far as the internet goes seems to be on celebrity gossip, so it’s nice to read something with depth and a soul. Thanks for sharing with all of your fans. You’re awesome, can’t wait to see you as Chloe again in the fall!

Hi!! I’ve never been to NYC or to Mexico, apart from through movies and documentaries. You have a very nice style of writing, gives the feeling that you are really into what you’re writing about, and it’s very fulfilling for you.

  • Jason

Hi there Alison, this is my first comment on your official website which I am so glad I found. Anyway my name is Jason and I am from Manchester in the United Kingdom and I really love your character you play in smallville and judging from your blogs u have written, to me u have been touched by god with kindness and love. Because you just don’t care about yourself, you care about the people in this world who suffer and can’t do the things u can do. Anyway I hope u read this and enjoy it and you have to come and visit Manchester sometime, its got great places to visit and learn about the culture and history of this city. Anyway if u want to you can email me at kornyk_jason@hotmail.com, but I doubt this will happen. Looking forward reading your new blogs soon…..

    All my kindness always….

    Jason

  • Curlyqlink

My first taste of Mexico was Cabo San Lucas. It was also my first scuba dive. Mexico is a gorgeous, sunbured, exotic plave above water, yet it is–incredibly–even more beautiful below.

(Vancouver Island, btw, is reputed to have some of the finest cold water diving on the planet. Just in case you ever feel the itch to try the underwater side of things….)

  • http://eddy.verdier.free.fr Eddy

    Hi Allison :)

Always a pleasure to read about your traveling adventures. I’ve been traveling a while myself but only for vacations and such ( I wish I had the opportunity to travel as much as you and discover the places I’d like to visit, basically those with spiritual/mystical feelings, like in Asia and such… ).

Season 6 of Smallville has just ended in France and I can’t wait for the 7th to come in there :) A lot of mystery floats around in the end, I just love that ^^

I hope I could see you for REAL one day if you even come to France anytime :)

Enjoy your trips, have fun, stay safe, and maybe see you later ;)

    Friendly luv,
    Eddy

@Moderators : Would it be possible to add my website as a support link to this site ? I already added a link making my visitors landing here. Please contact me at the email I left here to see it’d be ever possible :)

    Bonjour Allison.

    Ciao

    Hi Allison,

I’m glad that you had fun on your trip.

I just wanted to let you know that I think you’re great on “Smallville” and a fantastic actress. I’m a really devoted fan of the show (I own all five seasons on dvd) I’ve pretty much gotten all of my friends hooked on the show :) .

You provide such a great sense of humor that balances the progressively serious tone that the show has taken on over the years. I’ve seen the “Smallville Backstage Special” on ABC Family, and it seems that you have the same traits that everyone loves about Chloe’s character. I wish you well in all your future endeavors, and have a great time doing the 7th season!

    Sincerely,

    Eric Sessa

    Welcome back beautiful ;)
    Congratulazioni signorina. (Italian:Congratulations young lady.)

Sounds like you had a good time. Though, do heed the advice of some of your posters… take caution. I too have heard it is not wise to drink the water in Mexico. I have also heard that it is equally not wise to drink bottled beer. Uncertain of the scope (bottled products), but a semi-native once told me that they (Mexico) recycle (literally) their beer bottles for reuse- but they do not clean them. They simply refill the bottles, and redistribute.
I have been to Mexico, San Felipe, the ocean / beach was nice. Lots of fish tacos.

    Ciao tutti

  • Tony

The bottom portion of my post above got cut off :(

I suggested you (Allison) use Ciao tutti (Italian:Hello/Goodbye all)
More semi-formal when if you’re addressing a group, as opposed to an individual.
    ;)

    Dear Allison,

Hello, I’m a new fan of Smallville and I really like how you portray Chloe. I’ve been watching my way through Season 1 and I can’t wait to watch the other seasons and see how the characters develop.

Good luck on your future endeavors!

  • http://www.allisonmack.com shinystarlet

Sounds like you are having a great hiatus. I agree that NYC, particularly Manhattan, is indeed the greatest place on earth. I’ve lived here for almost 5 years and I am never leaving. I share a 600 sq ft space with 2 other people and for that honor pass a kidney stone when I write the rent check. Worth every penny. New York and the theatre community would do well to count you as one of it’s residents and I hope you move here when Smallville ends (you’ve mentioned in interviews that it is your goal) I spent the first year repeating the following mantra, “I can’t believe I live in New York.”:on the subway, on Broadway, in Central Park, and outdoor cafes. After 5 years the luster has not faded.

Did you get to climb the ruins? Nothing is better than scaling monuments of architectural genius then enjoying the view as you sweat and pant. I checked Tikal, Guatemala off my list last summer. Amazing.

    Enjoy!

  • Brittny

Oh! I can’t wait to hear about the Aztec ruins. Your description of the chili makes my mouth water! :)

  • AaronC

Even though I have never been to Mexico, I met a group of Mexican Youth at a camp I went to about eight years ago. It was in a little place called Warm Beach. It is between Seattle and Everett in Washington. I remember they were missing their chili and said nobody made it in the states the same as Mexico.

I’m glad you made it to your hometown in Manhattan, but I won’t consider you “home” until you make it back to the Smallville Set in Vancouver BC, since I live just a ferry ride away on the wonderful Sunshine Coast.

  • http://www.myspace.com/jonathanjforrester Jonathan Roark

    Hi Allison,

I have to say, it’s somewhat frustrating not being able to have a real conversation with you. Don’t get me wrong, I’m honored and very pleased that you’ve opened yourself up so much to your fans… it must take a lot of trust and strength to open yourself up so much to so many unknown people. I’m guessing that when you’re on stage portraying a character, it must feel as if you have an invisible shield…people see a portion of you, but not the real you that only you and a select few trustworthy loved ones ever get to see. This blog must make you feel somewhat exposed (I know mine has, but I’m naturally shy and introverted).

I find that I want to talk to you sometimes, but then I think about the nature of celebrity and how hard that would be for you. It must seem sometimes like everyone wants a piece of you…to be your friend, your boyfriend, your girlfriend (for some of the ladies out there); it must feel like you’re being pulled in a million different directions at once sometimes and that no matter what you do you can’t please everyone. That’s true of everyone, of course, but it must be worse for people in the public eye. And I’m sure you’ve experienced the dark side of celebrity, as well; there have undoubtedly been people who’ve made comments blocked by your moderator that would make a Bronx waitress blush. And yet, you continue to do us the honor of sharing your personal life with us.

I want you to know I’ve never gotten on a celebrity fan site before, I just checked out your page because I’m a fan of Smallville…nor have I ever developed a “crush” on a celebrity before (it’s a non-romantic crush, but a friendly crush all the same). Don’t get me wrong, I can look at a celebrity and think “Wow, she’s really beautiful,” but I’ve never really wanted to be friends with one before (though I would love to meet creative types whose work I really admire and just spend a day picking their brains). I mean, take Angelina Jolie for example: she’s pretty, and sexy as hell, and I’m sure no doubt interesting, but the woman scares me…I think it was that whole thing with her and the vial necklace containing Billy Bob’s blood. Yuck! :) I get on your page, however, and I find this nice, compassionate, cool person quoting Gandhi. Your page takes me back to good times in college, debating so many of my friends at diners at 3 in the morning about completely off-the-wall topics that only mattered to us.

So anyways, even though you can’t email your fans personally or really respond to our comments–and there’s not a single one of us out there, I’m guessing, that doesn’t wish you could–it’s still nice to have your blog and to get an insight into your brain and travels every now and then. Thanks for having the courage to open your life and heart to so many of us who can’t help but be your fans.

    Jonathan Roark

P.s. Not to ruin our feel-good, Hallmark moment, but I rented and watched “Chicago” the other day specifically because I read you had been a part of it in a stage production, and I have to say I hard a hard time with it. My reason? I really couldn’t find a protagonist to support. Don’t get me wrong, there were scenes and musical numbers that I loved, but it was hard for me to cheer for Roxy. She’s kind of an anti-hero, isn’t she? I’m sure she had a hard life, but still…the way she treated her husband, the fact that she shot that guy who legitimately wronged her, but only while she was cheating on her husband, really made it hard for me to feel sympathetic for her character. So by the time we get to the end (I’m trying really hard not to ruin the storyline for people who haven’t seen it), I feel somewhat unsatisfied that justice wasn’t done. Does that make me an unsympathetic jerk? :) I’ll take Moulin Rouge any day.

  • coy

hey allison, glad to hear you had a great time in mex. it really is a beautiful country. i live by the border so it looks bad, but once you pass Reynosa, it really is quite nice. i’ve only gone as far as Monterrey, it’s known for its mountains and is very beautiful at night. i hope to visit mexico city one day before it sinks.

If the portals of the sky could imitate the beauty of your eyes, i would die to contemplate your celestial light….
but if the hell could reproduce the color, the sound and the heat with that your lips play the air, it would be me the more
sinner of the man’s for when i die, burn eternally in the fire of your kiss…

Sorry about my terrible english, but i really love you!

… “my way” is not the true “authentic” way all the time…

I have been trying to formulate this thougt for five or six years :) It is so simple, but yet so few people understand it.

P.S. i think that your ability to accept and enjoy different cultures is amasing. The world desperately needs this quality today.
