…On Change…

The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew. by Abraham Lincoln
It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power. by Alan Cohen

Okay, so in case you haven’t noticed, my site has changed! I love it! I think it is beautiful. So, I have decided to take this week’s blog and focus on change and the beauty of change; hence the two amazing quotes I am using this week as the inspiration. I am so totally in love with the phrase Mr. Cohen used, “in movement there is life, and in change there is power“. I just want to stand up and cheer when I read that! So often I get stuck in what I think is predictable and certain, like in some way that makes me more safe or more happy! What a ridiculous lie to tell myself! The truth of the matter is that I am only limiting my experience of my life! I want to be as full and rich and… and exciting as possible and if I really want to attain this goal I need to stretch. I need to change. The nessessity for taking risk is so huge; I can’t believe that I am only just recognizing. I think so often I get stuck in the same old same old because it feels “safe” and comfortable, but what a horrible theft from me!

Really, you have one shot at this! Why not make the most of it! I am using tons of “!” because I really want to express my excitment and passion for this concept!!!!!

Life is about living, not sitting, sleeping, coasting, and comforting! It’s about failure, up and down, forward and back… all the above! A great friend of mine was telling me about an amazing man she heard speak, and he was saying that when you go to see a film, the most exciting parts are when the characters are going through the most change. In essence, this is when the characters are going through the most struggle. Why would we ever want to cut out the most exciting parts of our life?

Ahh! How fun!

Ciao for now!

Allison

Yay for !! I enjoy when I read blogs or notes with lots of exclmation points becuase it lets me know just how exicted the person is to be talking to me (or many others in this case)! Always good to know that people we love/admire are enjoying their life, makes it much easier to enjoy our own in a way. I am a huge fan of change, I am always doing little things to change up stuff in my life, from hair (it’s got pink highlights at the moment!), to dress and style, to my attitude. I am always in constant need of new and exciting things, I get bored so gosh darn easily!

Your new pictures are gorgeous, hope you continue to have the great time I can see you are already having!

    Hi Allison

The website looks wonderful – congratulations to you, Tabby and Chiruru :-)

Re your quote “in movement there is life, and in change there is power”, I was wondering if you’ve been watching the news about the Saffron Revolution in Burma. These are peaceful protests by Buddhist monks and unarmed civilians made against the unelected military junta which has been oppressing the people of Burma for over 19 years. The Burmese government have retaliated by beating, shooting and killing these innocent people.

I would be very grateful if you could spare a moment to take a look.

    Thanks again

    Allison,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on change!
Change can be really hard, sometimes, but in others, it can be empowering and exciting.
I really love this part of that Cohen quote, “there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful”. How true that is!

Struggle, indeed, is where we find the most exciting times of our lives because we can recognize and celebrate the good in the bad and it helps us appreciate when we DO have great times. If we never struggled, then we would never be able to see the triumphs.

The new layout looks great and those pictures are beautiful!

Looking forward to the Smallville premiere tonight and hope you are well :)

I will quote Muhammad Iqbal for you:

“Life is one and continuous. Man marches always onward to receive ever fresh illuminations from an Infinite Reality which ‘every moment appears in a new glory’ (Qur’an, 55:29). And the recipient of Divine illumination is not merely a passive recipient. Every act of a free ego creates a new situation, and thus offers further opportunities of creative unfolding.”

    Peace.

P.S. I like your new pics!

I love the new layout. The fresh new look is great. I also love the new photos. I really wish there were more photos of you out there.

On with the quote. The last bit of the second quote really hit me. “As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew.”

I think often times people get hit with a problem and they treat each one exactly the same. Prime example the way our current government treats a problem. I won’t get in to the strict of details but not every thing deserves the same action. Our willingness change makes use stronger and wiser.

Great words of wisdom this week. Good luck tonight with the Smallville premiere.

I share your lament over late-onset-risk-importance-realization. I’m just a little older than you, and I too have only begun to understand the importance of risk-taking in the last couple years.

It’s far too easy to get mired in the practice of risk aversion, but as Mr. Cohen pointed out, your perception of risk depends on your definition of security.

I’ve found my tendency, after being risk-averse for so long, is to swing wildly in the opposite direction, with grandiose plans for sweeping life changes. Not only does that create a situation where I’m set up to fail when I can’t fully implement so much change, but it wears away at my drive to try it the next time.

I’m currently trying new guidance, where I effect just enough change to scare the crap out of myself, without taking such a huge leap that I’m destined to fail. The risk of failure still looms, but without the predetermined fact that I’ve established an unreachable goal. As I get more comfortable with the size of a change, I hope that, from exposure, I will become more used to risk, and gradually it will require taking bigger risks to still meet the scare-the-crap-out bar.

I enjoy Mark Twain quotes, because you can usually find one that compels and another that comforts.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

“I was seldom able to see an opportunity until it had ceased to be one.”

Hey allison! I love your new pictures, you look beautiful!

I dont know how you do it allison, with every quote you put… the more it fits my life!!! I was just talking with my best friend about change. She was telling me at how I wouldnt take a chance and tell “someone” about how i feel and she told me that if im afraid to open the door ill never get to the next room! In other words, if im afraid to take risks ill never know what might have happen if i had taken the risk. Im trying to change that! Its just that you get so comfortable that you dont want to ruin the peace. THAT IS MY PROBLEM! I am so comfortable that i dont wanna change! but sometimes you have to take risks!! thank you allison! for showing me something new! LOL

    hey Allison!!
    i loved yout blog
    is great this way =)

i loved what you said, that reminds me something i saw
    in a film…
one man told that life is like a football game seen it 2 hours later,
when you see it, you get exited or preocupated cause you want to see the team winning,
make a touchdown, but that have already happened 2 hours ago,
they have won the game, or they have lost it… but you are still really
    preocupated and distressed.

He said life is the same thing, we get so distressed about something
    that we think could happend.
We have made that desicion,or we’ve made a mistake,
at the end it will happen, what makes the change is to believe that it have already happened.
I believe i have accomplish my dream.
    I believe i am a filmaker.
    I believe i have made a change.

It has happened, but i can’t see it right now,
right now may be im seeing the “most exiting” part of my movie
the part of all the changes!!

    i wish you the best!!
    what you do is amazing..
hope you could answer sometime =)
and the best for chloe this season xD

Change is one of life’s few constants. Although we may believe we are settled into a consistant, everyday routine, life will surely surprise us by mixing things up when we least expect it. It is said that the Lord works in mysterious ways, I believe this to be so, just as I believe in the saying that if you want to make God laugh, tell him what you are going to do tomorrow. That is what makes life exciting, we never know exactly what tomorrow holds – so Don’t Throw Away Tomorrow!!!

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us Allison.

Thanks for a wonderful premiere Allison! I love that you are now 4th in the credits as it should have been in the beginning. I just hope you stay on this show till the end, SV needs you! Chloe rocks!

I really like the new design, it’s a lot more cheerful and probably reflects your personality better. Keep on writing and updating your site because you have a lot of interesting and intriguing things to say. You’re also just like your character in terms of fine writing ability. Keep it up!

Oh, and change every once in a while is a very good thing. I like to keep things stable and well, but sometimes you just have to change it up, make things interesting, prove to yourself you’re not a robot.

  • http://electronicpsychotherapy.blogspot.com/ John

this entry kind of brings to mind my favorite quote ever.

“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; You put it into a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
    – Bruce Lee

Now, where’s the music, Allison? You get me hooked on “Dance Me to the end of Love” and now it’s not there?

  • http://www.myspace.com/ardiegolden Ardie

I know exactly where you are at. I often find myself starting to get comfortable in how life is, and then I am constantly being pushed out of my comfort zone. My son, Ethan, just started Kindergarten, and how funny it is that something as simple as that makes me ponder life and it’s cycle. It was hard those first couple of days, realizing that this was a first step in his independence. How torn I’ve been, happy on one hand because he is venturing into the world to become his own person, but terribly sad for me because things will never be what they were. What I have to remind myself is that even though it won’t be what it was, it is going to still be amazing. Possibly even more amazing then I realize :-)

  • Will

I agree, you can’t grow without change but Growth means change and change involves risk, stepping from the known to the unknown. This is what makes the human hold on to the only thing they know, scared to loose all.

    But Change involves three things
First, a dissatisfaction with self-a felt void or need
Second, a decision to change-to fill the void, need and seek a opportunity to get out and
Third, a conscious dedication to the process of growth and change-the willful act of making the change Doing Something:
“The strongest principle of growth lies in human choice”

That’s where change start coz Growth demands a temporary surrender of security – taking the risk. All growth depends upon activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work.

The Bright side is that there are no great limits to growth because there are no limits of human intelligence, imagination, and wonder. Change is the end result of all true learning.

Coolest Quote I know about change from Brian Tracy and sums up the above mentioned:
“The more you seek security, the less of it you have. But the more you seek opportunity, the more likely it is that you will achieve the security that you desire.
Security can only be achieved through constant change, through discarding old ideas that have outlived their usefulness and adapting others to current facts.”

So Allison, we love the new website, gives a new atmosphere to it and contributing to our fresh season Spring here in South Africa.

    Great week to you Allison!!

    Hi Allison!
Love your new site…a refreshing green “look” that goes so well with your wonderful green eyes! Nice work! So, my thoughts on the subject “change”. Well, I have to agree with Alan Cohen that change for me is the unknown. It´s sometimes difficult to take the step, to let yourself “go on”. We tend to get caught up with all that´s familiar and secure, like you said, and change might feel frightening and risky. One essential part of life is changing in who you are, what you belive in and what you want to become. I have been reflecting my own live so far now in my thirties and sometimes I feel that life has gone by as if I had been sleeping. Now I have the erge to do things I´ve dreamt about and thought of doing for so long. I don´t know why I haven´t been able to do all those things but I guess that I´ve been stuck in the moment too much to react. So, my advice for you is to do the things YOU want to do, no matter if they seem weird in the eyes of someone else. Live your life as its fullest with no regrets and what ifs. It took me thirty years to figure this out but rather late than never. Think anew and act anew, like Lincoln said!

Happy thoughts and changes for the weekend!

  • http://www.myspace.com/matttucker Tucker

    Wow, your eyes are stunning.

I like the new layout. It’s open and attentive.

You know, it’s interesting that you talk about change right now. I am myself coming to a point where change will become my primary c-word instead of comfort. And it’s not even that my life is comfortable. In fact, it’s cracked. But I’ve just been too comfortable in remaining this way and lazy to change anything about it. Which then takes on its own form of comfort – heaven forbid I should take it upon myself to think of new things, discover new paths and new ways of living my life. No, no, it’s much more comfortable to remain cracked and numb. In a sense, lifeless.

I was zoning out to cable the other night and happened to catch the movie Serendipity with John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale and Jeremy Piven. It’s not a great movie by any means but it coasts by on the charms of Cusack, the likeability of Beckinsale, the audaciousness of Piven and some humorous turns by Molly Shannon and John Corbitt.

Anyway…. There’s a quote from the movie that I remember catching when I’d seen it a few years ago. Cusack’s and Piven’s characters have hopped on a plane to fly from New York to Berkeley, California, so that he can see if he’s meant to be with a woman he met briefly some number of years before. Cusack’s actually supposed to be at his bachelor party but he’s convinced his best friend to go along with this crazy scheme.

Piven turns to him on the plane and relates the first part of a quote from an ancient Greek text that really stuck with me. One that I think tires into the whole change and shaking up the comfort business. The whole quote is this:

“If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid with regard to external things. Don’t wish to be thought to know anything; and even if you appear to be somebody important to others, distrust yourself. For, it is difficult to both keep your faculty of choice in a state conformable to nature, and at the same time acquire external things. But while you are careful about the one, you must of necessity neglect the other.”

    - Epictetus, The Enchiridion

Piven’s character says this because he admires his friend for being a “jackass” enough to forget what anybody thinks and to forgo the comfort of his life and the plans he’s made to go after this passion, to go after something that could be the most meaningful and most altering thing in his life.

Now while the movie doesn’t stick with me aside from a few funny bits, the introduction to the quote does. It really does speak to change and getting out of your comfort zone. We’re too often influenced by outside things, the external, which deadens or numbs one of the really intrinsic values of humanity – our ability to adapt, to change, to grow. It’s exciting to rediscover that in yourself, isn’t it?

Thanks so much for sharing. Definitely struck the right chords at the right time.

    - mt

Here’s another quote. “God doesn’t close a door without opening a window.” Should I take that to heart? The pilot episode of this season of “Smallville” represented a big change for me. A door closed. It has been swinging shut for a while now, but it finally shut and the door latch clicked. So, if a window opens up, should I jump out of it? Opinions?

    Hey Allison!

I agree with you, the changes in our lives are those that make us enrich. Often we thought that if something is not known then is not safe and the truth is that, perhaps, if you waste the opportunity and do not take risks, you will never know if there were some benefits for you. In my opinion, fight with the fear of “being” is the important thing; the fear that often takes you to doubt what can be beneficial for you… but the question is: “ How can someone who is weak in feelings but strong in spirit can fight against the fear? ”… I have been investigating!!!!. Sometimes I used to long for someone or something that is no longer with me, and it makes me think that maybe changes is not what I am looking for, and againg I fall in a cycle of insecurity and doubt… jajajaja, Kind of confusing don’t you think! I think that you have a strong belief about take risks and look for changes, and you are right…those positive thoughts has given you strength, Allison you are filling with joy everyone who passes to your side… jejeje… if a person can do that being “Positive” then I believe that the answer to my question lies in the positiviness.

Jejejejeje, you are brilliant… follow your dreams and you will achieve them, fight for your beliefs and you will succeed over each obstacle…

Thanks… ah!, you look pretty in your new photos… kisses

Thats my opinion to Alison life is not about sitting around waiting for things to happen you have to get out there and take risks or else nothing change.I’m slowly making change to my life to and things are getting different bit by bit but i like it you know it’s all just a part of living. And if you want to get excited then go right ahead.hope to hear more of you’re blogs soon

  • http://www.myspace.com/taurnguard Paul V

I am from the other side of change that you come from, Allison.

Growing up, my life was constantly changing. My family (me, sister, and mom) moved way too often. We never stayed in the same place for more than a year. This meant going to a new school, starting all over again to make friends (and unfortunately, bullies).
My mom being the true Libra would look for the smallest thing to go wrong (job, neighborhood, etc) and would use it as an excuse to move us yet again.
Change has its price. Stability (physically and mentally) does have its rewards: long lasting friendships, security, familiarity.
I have lived in San Francisco for over 8 years now. People in other cities watch the leaves change over the years like I watch the tourists change over the years.
One other note: Things can be improved without being changed.

    Allison,
I just wanted to let you know that you are an amazing person. You are an amazing actress as well. I look forward to Smallville just as I have for the past 7 years, just to watch you grow not only as an actor but as a person. I have learned so much from you just by watching the show. I have grown in my own life with your help and even though you dont know me and I know you will probably never get the chance but I just wanted you to know how much you have impacted me and my life not only as a SUPER HUGE fan but also as a person. Thank you so much.
I look forward to reading your blogs and all your poems that relate to me almost all the time.

    Hi Allison!

How are you doing? It’s great to hear from you again…!
I have to say I’m really disappointed with the new site’s style…. I couldn’t find the “log in” link, that’s why I’m answering without being logged! So please, somebody who send me an e-mail telling me where it is!!!

Now about your comment of the week… Everything was said, lol, Life is about changing, so as we can enrich our lives and enjoy every moment on it. But, of course, we have to control those changes in order not to become what we don’t want to be.

I want to share my “big change” with you and everyone else: I’m only 15, so I’m not used to take important decisions in order to “CHANGE”… But last year, I decided to change from school: I went to the same school all my life, 10 years with the same great people, neighbourhood, house, etc. I was so accustomed to my common life that I realised I was needing a change, so I decided to change from school. I found myself in a new world: a new school, new people, etc., but I realised how great this new world was.
I think that in one’s life the decisions we take are the ones who would or not generate a change. It’s our duty or mission to take those decisions in order to enjoy the change….

    I don’t know if I explained myself, I hope so…lol

Allison, keep sharing your thoughts with us! I’m leaving now
Take care and have a good week

    Bye!

Please somebody who remember to send my an e-mail with where to find the “log in” link. Thanks!

    Hello from England!

I totally agree with that qoute, “in movement there is life and in change there is power”. So often I struggle to change, I’m happy and safe in my own little world, a few months ago I was in an environment I knew and had friends i could rely on, however recently everything’s changed as all my friends have gone off to uni?!?!?!?!?! argh! And I’m left behind for a year! Although I didn’t at first see the good side (they got in to Uni… I didn’t…) I now know that the change was good. I now have a year to mature, to become more independant and ready to leave home, i’m not sure i’d have coped if i had’ve actually gone this year. This change has brought power becuase I have a chance to learn and explore, to distance myself from old friends, and to make new friends. I now know that this year will be great! Sorry to babble!

Since everyone else seems to be commenting you on your new site, I think I better join in and say it’s fab! I love the colour scheme, and your pics are great!

Keep up the awesome work in Smallville, its a bum in England though as we’re only half way through the sixth series… so I know what’ll happen becuase of all the spoilers on the internet! Nevermind though, the storyline sounds brill!

Nice to hear that you enjoyed your time in London, I hope the weather was good, as it usually isn’t over here… we’ve had an awful summer!

    Bye!

“The bird of paradise alights only upon the hand that does not grasp”.
    –john berry

    Now some words in spanish

Hi Allison! I share your impression about this site, the first design looked very well, I loved its simplicity, richness of space and content, and of course the color green which is one of my favourite colours. Yesterday, when I saw the new design, I thought “What a great job of design has been done on this place!, It looks modern, like a magazine or a fashion web site.” Your blog is on the cutting edge, has branded a before and after on everything related to blogs. Congratulations to the designer!

I like your new photo session, you look more than precious. You don’t have nothing to envy to the models who appear on the most magnificent catalogs, because your beauty exceeds the limit of estetic, it’s something that goes out of the image and reaches new and wondrous perceptions. My favourites are the two photos where you’re using a hairband, they’re enigmatic and interesting; and the two photos where you’re using green dresses. I really love the green colour because it symbolises hope. In short, all of your photos are beautiful, but there is one that really impressed me. It’s the one where you appear with a light violet dress, smiling straightly to the camera, that’s art!

Your emotion has gone out of the my LCD’s screen, it’s great to see someone motivated! Yes!, hold on to that feeling, beat up all of the defiances that life will put on your way.

In my case, when there’s something that I’m afraid to face, I tend to remember the past and the way I felt when I used to let the things pass by. That’s the moment when my longs for building a great present push me the whole day to throw me to the risk. The aftermath is a pleasant sensation; I feel powerful to change my world and ready for taking the next goal. I suppose that’s the idea of living. So never, never let your dreams pass by, remember that we can do everything. I heard this in some place: “I prefer to suffer and to have lived, than to suffer and not to live”.

    Bye Alli
    See you soon

    Hi Allison,
I don’t know why but i can’t login. i think change is great. you’re right, we should take risks. life is about failure and learning from failure. if we didn’t learn from failure we would always make the same mistakes. srry i haven’t had time to respond earlier, i’ve had homework.

loved the season premiere. you were great.

    can’t wait for next blog.

So, speaking of change, Allison, will this lead to future acting endeavors, or is your heart leading you to a different avenue? From reading your blogs, I feel like I have a better sense of who Allison Mack is, and I believe that you can succeed in just about anything you work towards. The reason? You have a strong will and you put a lot of thought into things. Those are 2 positives that can get you anywhere in life with hard work. Hard work, although important, alone just won’t cut it (my opinion).

BTW, Smallville season 7 premiere….FREAKING AWESOME!!!!

    Hey Allison!!!
I love reading your words and see how you are changing blog by blog.

Changes is a hard word, hard to life, hard to embrace it.
However is the best thing in your life, because you can check the good and bad things you have done and how you can overcome every trouble, every thought, every experience with this amazing change.

All of us are changing day by day, or experience by experience.
I’ve lived a three changes in my own life.
I used to be a shy girl, good friend, good daughther and sister.. everyone abused my trust and I suffered a lot. I said enough and I changed.
A lot of things happened to me and another change came into my life.
And the last one was for one year ago…
Now I am better person than before, more secure of myself and I think that anyone can hurt me now.
i amvery proud of that now, because when I check my past I realize the way I have to see the life now, and I am very proud of it.

So, I am very happy you feel changes for good.
i am very proud of you too!!!!!!!

keep on this way Allison, I liked you could see the same way I see you!! and I am sure that you’d suprise about it!!
You are an amazing / wonderful person!!
BECAUSE EVEN YOU LIVE CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE, THE ESSENCE NEVER CHANGES AND IT’S WHAT MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL ALLISON!!!

its so nice to hear from someone else how i feel! i totally agree allison change is good. and i guess where you’re going at is a life of never ending dreams. and not only leaving it as dreams but accomplishments that you will one day look back on. keep you’re life in a constant reminder that you shouldn’t have to settle with what you have right now at this one second in time but for something that might seem unreachable. because that feeling of reaching that impossible is worth leaving your comfort zone for.

i love your new website by the way.

smallville’s new season is starting off awesome by the way =) i’m so glad you resurrected from the dead XD it wouldnt have been the same without chloe in it lol

take care and try to take a second and breathe all those great and wonderful moments of your life so they can last even longer

your new blog commenter but no so new fan,

    Hi Allison.
I love your new photos, you look so beautiful and natural.
Your site has changed! I love it!
Thanks for a wonderful premiere Allison! I love that you are now 4th in the credits as it should have been in the beginning. Your performance was fabulous. During the panic scene at the morgue I cried of joy. I was touched by your great sensitivity in the other scenes. Your great sensitivity is like a super capacity. You must control it.
I am happy that you consider the change in a positive way. Each person has a different capacity to accept the changes and these capacity change with the time and lived. Don’t blame you for the past.
”I want to be as full and rich and… and exciting as possible and if I really want to attain this goal I need to stretch. I need to change. ”
All the televiewers of Smallville appreciate your talents of actress and your personality. With new roles, more people will see you and more people will love you.
Take care of you and thanks for the blog.

    Claude.
