My Purpose

Hey, team! I hope everyone has been enjoying the little video blog thingies that my dear Tabby has been throwing up over the last little bit. They’re really cool, and, well, let’s be honest… I love to talk, so they’re really fun for me to do as well. I’ve been so inspired as of late, and I’m feeling more and more consistently aware of how lucky I am to be living this life.

I’m looping around and around in my head about that grand and overbearing question “Why am I here?” Just recently, I’ve come to a somewhat vague, but kind of nice conclusion—I think I’m here to make stuff and appreciate stuff that others have made… To spread joy, passion, and enthusiasm through my own experience and expression in the world—simple, right? I kept thinking that my “purpose” had to be this ridiculously complicated thing, but when I get down to the core of it all, it feels like the only real significant reason any of us is here is to find our true selves and the things that make us unique from anyone else in the world, and to express that in a joyful and honest way. I guess the journey of life is whatever happens while you are on the quest to do so… I like this.

Maybe it is because of my fear of failure, but this seems to make the approach to failing and trying new things really exciting rather than daunting. I mean, if I could truly look at everything I do for what it is, just another way to understand and express me in the world, it would kind of take the edge off the outcome. So now, it’s just taking the steps to do so and trying to be compassionate with myself when I get off track or get confused or caught up in other things. What do you think your purpose is? It’s such a weighted word that I don’t think we ever really explore… So let’s do that! I don’t know… Chew on it if you want and share… Throw your hat in the ring. I mean, why not? Right?

Oh, and hey! I never let you all know what happened with my birthday gift that you so beautifully gave to me! I donated it to a theatre project dedicated to aiding all people in their pursuit to finding and expressing their passion in the world. The company is called World Audience Productions, and it’s run by a friend of mine who believes that we can use theatre and acting as a way for people to overcome their greatest fears and truly get in touch with what it means to express themselves in a joyful and exciting way!

I have such a passion for theatre, and I really believe that it can do so much more for this world and the people in it than just simply entertain. The woman who’s building this theatre company is working towards developing a place where all people can come and explore themselves through the art of theatre and acting. It’s really beautiful to see some of the things I value most in my life combined and actualize. Thanks so much again all of you! I’m so constantly overwhelmed by the amazing support and enthusiasm I get from all of you beautiful people! YAY!

Ciao for now,
Allison

PS—For those of you waiting for your pictures, you should be getting them this week, and I hope you all receive them okay! If you don’t receive them by U.S. Thanksgiving, please contact Tabby.

What about biology? Every other form of life on the planet is here to reproduce…are we excepted from this rule?

I’m of the opinion that there is no inherent purpose or meaning to life beyond the biological one. One has to choose to add any meaning beyond that.

  • Kyle

I love the way you described your purpose in life. It’s simple and sometimes simplicity is the best way to go. I agree it’s important to find our true self and the things making us unique in life. Once we realize who we are we can now turn our focus outward — finding different ways to enrich the world and people in it by our own unique way.

Of course, It would be wonderful if everyone could agree on a collective purpose (without getting into an argument on a universal purpose) but happiness mostly comes from finding meaning within yourself and your abilities.

On the question you asked – I tend to think we choose our own paths and purpose. Currently I am building my life towards helping people; happiness and self-satisfaction ensues. “There is more happiness in giving then receiving,” and I hope to personify that.

    hi everyone!

finding our place in world is the most difficult thing to do, sometimes life ends before it.

So I’m trying to change all those things that I don’t like about myself to become a better person.

And I really hope all of you can find your own place in this beautiful world and share it with everyone.

I found that it makes me feel good to be apart of a dynamic with others,
I also found that to be happy in your own skin is just as important.
So I guess my purpose is to be a good friend, to be true to yourself, enables you to be true to others.
The latter makes me feel good.
It seems one of the difficulties in life is realizing you’re not alone.
Though it can be difficult to find souls you can count on.

My other purpose is Music. :) I have this dream of having one of my songs used in one of my favorite t.v. shows!
Smallville’s the only one that’s still running too! haha :)

I hope to hear you sing more too. :)
You naturally Inspire me and your characters and indeed singing voice are truly awesome.

    Hugs and Squishes

Purposes in life: Feed my family today. Feed my family tomorrow. Possibly save to feed myself when I am too old to work. Beyond that, it’s all gravy.

Guess I haven’t quite moved on yet.

I like the way you are sharing with us your purposes in life so… i’m going to share mine:
Maybe my purpose in life is TO LIVE, with my mistakes, my goals, my desires,… And try to be as honest as i can, trying to understand people have to find their path, ( maybe i can help them to find it, but am i sure that the path i’m seeing is the path they need?) and i really need to learn to ask for help, i’m always trying to help people around me, but i don’t know how to ask it for me

    well, this is all

    Hello Allison,
    I’m Diego, from Brazil.
I read your last message. It is very important for me to know your opinion about facts of life. You have affection with the public through different means of communication. This is fantastic!

All of us have a daily purpose. I think that we can describe ‘purpose’ with a sentence written by a philosopher some centuries ago:
“What we know is a drop of water”. To discover ourselves is necessary goals, discipline and motivation.

Tenha uma ótima semana (have a nice week in brazilian portuguese).
    Hugs,

I asked myself the same question and I found my answers. It was such a turning point in my journey.
I’m happy you came up with a conclusion too.

Helping a theatre company is a great idea. And you’re right, you can do a lot of good in this world. Besides, you’ve already made a positive change in this world and you continue to do so.

    Have a great week Allison.

    Hi Allison and fellow fans,

Thanks for a new blog entry…you certainly like to make us think!

My purpose in life…mm well I guess I have in my own way thought about this topic, after all I think it was one of the reasons why I joined the police years ago and probably the same reason i decided to leave…maybe…(it could even be part of the reason i’ve had so many career paths).

I guess..like everyone all i just want my friends, family and myself to be happy and if i’m very lucky meet someone to be happy with, and be a decent human being to others and myself. After that not much else is really THAT important is it?!

You’ve really given me something to think about..

Glad to hear the birthday money as gone to a cause you are so clearly passionate about and I wish your friend the best of luck in setting up this theatre company, I hope it entertains, educates and inspires for all the people who participate..who knows we might get another actor in the mould of Miss Mack ..haha

    Take care,

    Dearest Allison

I was thinking of “The Matrix-Reloaded” Where Agent Smith says: “As we both know, Mr. Anderson, without purpose, neither of us would be here. It is purpose that binds us, drives us, defines us! You took that from us, Mr. Anderson, and we will now take it back!” -start wicked action sequence-. The Wachowski brothers were clever to expound on a book entitled “Simulation and Simulacra” for the trilogy. It made for content heavy storytelling, which probably went over alot of heads. But if you go back and watch, you can see they examine alot of these same issues, namely:
    what is purpose?
    what is control?
does your religion provide control? Liberty? Discipline? Purpose?
    what DO you believe?
Is it all in your head? :-)
Solomon wrote: God made life simple. It is man who makes it complicated.
I love the way you articulate the process of coming to understand your “purpose”. Use it as an anchor, to keep you from going to far astray, either mentally, or physically.
Here is where I must make my own confession. I am a screenwriter. Now is not an especially good time to be one. But I am dealing.(Talk about struggling with purpose!)
You know, my father was a philosopher, so I grew up having these kinds of conversations. Lately, I have come to really enjoy coming to this site.

To answer this blog, I think my purpose is to leave a trail of smiles or laughter wherever I go. I’m not a comedian by any means, but I like to lift the moods of those around me by complimenting someone or saying something that’ll elicit that smile. I know I can’t control others emotions but it sure is a neat feeling to see someone smile because of something you said.

I’m not always successful but perhaps I should stay focused on that and I might be more successful.

I’m gonna use a great Smallville quote for this entry, more or less accurate: “I believe everyone is put on this Earth for a reason. Our task in life is to find out what that reason is.” Who knows why we’re here? I guess we’re supposed to be figuring that out, but will we ever really know? We’ll have our ideas, of course, but no one can be certain, not until the end. But heck, while we’re here, let’s have a good time, and try our hardest, and just be the best we can ever be!!
Loved the video blogs, by the way.
And you’re doing great on Smallville!! Keep up the good work!! Hopefully they’ll smooth over this whole writer’s strike and we’ll have a full season of Smallville to enjoy. =)

Hello Allison, I believe in life we all have challeges we have to take. Life will not always be a bed of roses. There will be times when you will get pricked by a thorn, or two. All you have to do is take that step toward the next challege in life and go for it. Just rememder that if you don’t go for your goals you will never succeed to step beyond the next stepping stone in life. Good Luck with the directing! Take care Alyson

Your view of purpose totally changes once you bring children into the world. Part of my purpose is to raise and care for my daughter, and to ensure she is guided to her purpose. The other side, I have yet to determine, and I’m almost 30. Pondering it, deciding it, stresses me out a bit, because I wonder if I am not doing what I am fated to do… but I do know when I look into my daughter’s eyes, I’m reminded that I must be doing something right somewhere. So to avoid freaking myself out, I just live day to day to its fullest and tackel whatever heads my way.

    Cheers~

The purpose of life is to express your God-given talents with the world, in a God-given way. To reveal the light tainted and procured by the clouds of iniquitous transgression. To unveil the one who gives hope for the hopeless. Peace and forgiveness. The one who’s Grace is incomprehensible. All one may have to do is let their eyes not fail with looking upward. For that is the answer to anyone’s purpose.

  • Mandy

I think my purpose is to appreciate the place of every person and every thing in this world. I normally get called a geek because I have an eclectic mixture of interests, but being a “geek” isn’t a term that I shy away from at all. What is a geek anyway? It’s someone who strives to get as much information on a topic as possible as a means of improving themselves. At least, that’s my definition.

I can understand your love for theatre. It’s something that I wish I would have discovered at an earlier age, but now I can’t seem to get enough of it. And as great as it is to go see professionals, I think my favorite has to be when I get to see my students put their hearts and souls into a performance. It’s a great feeling.

Loving the V-logs. Keep it up!

Well…it’s clear that you’ll never seize to blow you’re fans away, all you do is write one amazing blog after another. This one will really give people something to think about,i mean people ponder on this question but it’s like nobody will fully aproach it untill now.My reason for being here…well…i really have no idea, just riding the path out i guess Allison, you know, but i’m sure someday it will hit me.

can’t wait for you’re next blog

  • Matt W

Its funny you brought this up because I feel like I havent known my purpose in the world at all the last few years. Whenever I try to figure it out it seems like I just draw a massive blank. Maybe everyone at some point struggles with this question. But after reading what you had to say Allison…I may have an idea about what my purpose is. Its possible my purpose is to teach others how to slow down and take a deep breath and realize that life is something beautiful. How it can be easy to take for granted so much and complain about little silly things. I feel like I can help people be much more gracious about life. My whole life I have been very critical about myself and saying to myself that I have no purpose. But maybe I do.

  • Rachel M

“How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people.”
    Albert Einstein

It was the Dalai Lama (and many more I’m sure) that said regardless of religion, our very purpose it to seek happiness and something better in life. Our very motion of life is towards happiness. I love people, but I can’t say that I’m nice everyday, because of things that pop up the make life alittle more complex then one would like. Even then I think my purpose is to help people whither it’s what they need. And vice versa, people are there to help others in the smallest or even a bigger way. I think the biggest mistake is that we over look what happens through out the day, whither it’s the places that one goes or the people that one meets. May you contiue to enlighten us with your thoughts, your smile, and the entertainment you provide. Thank you Ms. Tabby, and Allison Mack. May you have a wonderful day. =)

I have always figured that “purpose” is every human beings quest to determine….A plan. A sequence. A path. A reason. We force ourselves to yearn for a purpose. We all want to feel that we alone have significant meaning. To feel that there is some greater good for us to be in the here and the now. My life has been one obstacle after another. One test after another. A challenge from the get go (I was a preemie-born early). The only true “purpose” that I have encountered is “affect.” By that I mean that my existence “affects” everything around me…. from work, to traffic, to the wind blowing, to the people that I interact with on a daily basis. Everything I do makes a difference… because if I wasn’t here…. well….. It WOULD BE different. It would just have to be different. Everything would be different. Better? Worse? I don’t know. Just different. We “cause” difference everyday with everything….. Some bad…. Some good….. Some neutral….. But it is a difference. And if I wasn’t here, someone else would be making that difference…. Someone would take my place in traffic, block the breeze that was meant to spread the seed of a flower, bump into that person who I would have let by…. and causing them to not get in their car at the right time and miss their favorite song on the radio…..just from a bump… Everyone causes a difference. Everyone is a “cause.” Everything is an “affect.”

Allison….. You cause so many people so much happiness. You affect everyone that sees, hears, discusses, contemplates your work, personality, choices, dreams. I wish I could be that kind of cause. At the end of the day, you just have to think about how many peoples’ day that you had an affect one (for example: enjoying your blog and contemplating your opinions just caused me to skip my lunch hour…. See now that just makes it more real…now I get to eat from the vending machine… Snickers… yum yum). Just try to rap your mind around that number of people. Whether it may be from your blog, your acting, your choices or even just that quick smile you give someone in the hallway. An affect is an affect regardless of how big or how small. Each day I come here to read, you affect my day, my mood, my thoughts. I am grateful for your affect on MY day. I look forward to the many years ahead… with your potential…to the many affects you will have on the world.

    Go Tabby!!!
i think my purpose is to not have a job, because i seriously can not get one in a field other then construction! lol back to pounding nails, or music maybe, but that doesn’t really offer a ‘living’ so to speak.

  • Jeremy

In regards to Matt’s comment, the famous evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins refers to humanity in his book “The Selfish Gene” as little more than “gene machines”, i.e., biological entities wholly concerned with gene replication. That might be a scientific answer to the question of purpose, but it is a rather unsatisfactory answer philosophically.

The question, then, is only one that each of us individually can answer. Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living”, but it’s important not to take that sentiment to any extreme and paralyze yourself in a constant cycle of self reflection.

I think purpose, like success, is not something that can be identified or determined externally. It is something that you have to decide for yourself and your purpose is what you make it. So put away the Tony Robbins CDs, close the self help book and reflect on what it is that you want. Don’t get yourself so wrapped up in the question of purpose that you forget to live. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “We are always getting ready to live but never living.”

As for myself, I know my purpose. It is to breed and raise dinosaurs for my dinosaur amusement park. I am going to call it “Cretaceous Safari.” Just wait until your sink your teeth into one of our delicious Bronotsaurus burgers. Mmmmmmmm. Oh, and dinosaur rides for the children. It’s going to be amazing.

    Purpose hmmmm, well here goes

I guess the purpose of any human is to stay alive and healthy doing the things that make you happyist. Sums it up, mostly there might be little quirks to your life you would like to add or take away but generaly thats it, at least for me, which right sucks cuz doing the thing that make me happyist hurt me. Trust me its not drugs. Drugs bad. Bikes Good. Tryed soemthing to big and broke my wrist, but i feel like there was a purpose to that. Live, learn, Repeat, Learn, Dont repeat. It simple, but humans do that to add purpose to thier lives.

Quote of my life “Do what you can with what you have, While you have it.” Very purpose filled

    Yay, beautiful blog Allison!

I love to think about my purpose, I mean I know it is to write and tell stories becuase I love doing both, but I am not exactly sure what my stories to tell are yet. And I have always thought I was born in the wrong time, or I’ve been born and lived in many other times in my other lives. I feel like I just could be plopped into any time and fit in, I am a openminded person and love pretty much all era’s. I would love to visit many and experience how life was then. Where I am actually going with this I have no idea, but the fact that my interests lie in very different ear’s has always amazed me and had me questioning what I did in other lives.

Can’t wait to get the autograph, thanks again for that!

I believe purpose is something that lives in us whether we’re aware of it or not. Although it’s in all of us, we need to make it a priority every day. For me, my purpose is to live a life of praise to God. I mean, he created everything, including me! And it’s neat, how, when he is my priority, everything else in my life falls into place(not perfect, mind you :) . Anyway, finding the purpose in your life is important. It’s what keeps us going!

“We all look for happiness, but without knowing where to find it: like drunkards who look for their house, knowing dimly that they have one.”
    –Voltaire

The search for success would seem to be much the same as the search for happiness, since it’s difficult to imagine the happy life that that could be called a failed life. So it appears to boil down to the question, what makes you happy?

This aphorism of Voltaire’s may seem grim, until we remember that the drunkard, one way or another, eventually does find his house.

    Give me a purpose
Tell me what I should be
    How to live my life
    Who should I be
    Thats not my place
    Its for you to discover
    What to become
    One way or another
    Trial and error
    Finding what fits
    Making a point
    Not to give in
    Search your soul
    Take a deep breath
    The answer will come
    Just be patient
    Your purpose in life
    My sweet dear child
Is to be the best you
And be kind to all others
    Dont lash out in anger
    Dont speak out in fear
    Search inside yourself
For the love you hold dear
Spread it out my dear one
    Let the love flow
    Show the world your smile
Let them see the real you
    Its not how you look
Or the car that you drive
    Its the compassion you show
And the light that you shine
