Alice & Huck

Hello, team! So a few blogs ago, I posted something about my purpose– remember? Many of you responded to this in a wonderfully beautiful and honest way… So that blog entry came out of a project I have been working on for several months now… A short film that was written for me by one of my best friends in the world and directed by another one of my best buddies! Well, 3 weeks ago we shot the film! It was the most amazing experience I have had in a very long time! To be a part of a team of people doing what they love only because they love it was so inspiring and exciting!

It also felt so good to be a part of a project from its inception, to be a part of creating something from start to finish and really feel like I was a part of the whole process. I can’t tell you all how incredibly fulfilling this was. I so encourage all of you to be a part of something like this at some point in your life. Find the thing that you love doing, the thing that you feel the most inspired and excited by… And do it! Just fuckin’ dive in and do it! It’s so satisfying!

That being said, my lovely friend and editor and my director are working on little behind the scenes docs that we’re going to be releasing sporadically for you all to watch and enjoy! We’re wanting to finish this thing so we can send it out to festivals and hopefully get it marketed and distributed!

Also, I’m starting a little schwag part that I would love to invite all of you to participate in! I have a few little items that I’ve made up, with a little help from my crew, that I’m selling to help me finance this project. I need 7500 bucks to finish this baby, and I think that between all of the support I get from you wonderful people who never cease to amaze me with your incredible support and a few different grants and such, I could potentially reach my goal! So check out my doc and click on the donations button I added to my site and let me know if there are any products you are into buying to help me finish this awesome project! Enjoy watching me do something other than Chloe :) And thank you so much for joining me on this radical journey!

Click the links on the side to find out how you can be apart of this!

Ciao for now,
Allison

  • Cheekycrissy

Ignore all that bollocks about swearing on your blog.. its YOUR blog, lol

As for the grant option.. i never really been one to wait around and going to the bank is a BIG no no.. i seen a guy sell his house and CAR and maxed out 3 credit cards JUST to complete his film…(now, he’s delared himself bankrupt and his wife and children have left him.. Silly, Silly boy!!)

This is a time where you need family and friends around you to help you
and more.. even old friends you probably haven’t talked to in awhile.
I wish you the best of luck on your movie..

Just DON’T go to that bank manager!! lol

    Oh.. and Happy Xmas xxxxxxx

    Dear Allison,

    Your new project looks wonderful.

I live in France right now. Is it possible to donate ?

    Merrry Christmas and best wishes.

    Hey Allison,
Congratulations on the short film! It must be so exciting to have the opportunity to work on a project with such close friends, I can only imagine how much fun it would have been. I cannot wait to see your role in the film, so keep us all updated on that please and thank you. Enjoy your Christmas, and be safe in whatever you do.

    Blessings,

I’m disappointed. When I saw “Huck,” I thought you were endorsing Mike Huckabee.

I’m going through Season 4, and I’m about to watch one of my favorite episodes (“Blank”). Happy holidays!

  • Tiago Dantas

Hi Allison, i’m so glad to find this website, i’m your big fan since the first season of smallville. here in Brazil Smallville is a fever, everybody likes. this new project is a fantastic thing and will be a great job.
    kisses

    peace and love dear

I’m back. I’ve been reading what some people have been saying about you asking your fans for help in raising money and I see nothing wrong with it. Ignore these rude comments and don’t let them make you feel bad for asking. If I had the extra money I would donate in a heartbeat. Maybe after Xmas I’ll have a little extra and can buy a tee shirt. Merry Christmas Allison!

  • bourdieu

“If I had the extra money I would donate in a heartbeat. Maybe after Xmas I’ll have a little extra and can buy a tee shirt.”

Which is kind of the point. You might want to buy a t-shirt for if you have a little extra after Christmas, but get it for yourself because it’s what you want, not to make a “donation”.

How much is a first class flight from north America to London? $10-15K?

  • David Dunkerton

I guess I understand why you would want to broaden your horizons & do something else besides Chloe Sullivan, but why would you be anyone else!?!
I have a hard time accepting that Tom Welling doesn’t really have superpowers, too. When his character on Cheaper By the Dozen was all bummed that they were moving because he wouldn’t be able to see his girlfriend as much, I couldn’t understand why he couldn’t just run back there…
I’m going to have a hard time when Smallville is over – they need to have spin-offs with all the same characters forever!

Anyway, I’m curious about your short film, & I hope everything works out for you!

  • http://2teaflute.blogspot.com paul

Ouch. I can’t agree with bourdieu on that one, in fact I’m disappointed in him/her now for making that dig! It’s irrelevant how much money AM has or doesn’t have, or whether that ticket to London was on her dime.

We all have different values. What is appropriate, what is not. When is a donation not a donation. When is involvement in the arts not really involvement…Me, I find it interesting that these values are being discussed here. Discussed, debated, maybe even disputed. I just hope nobody takes it personally or feels insulted.

I quoted this whole post because that is exactly how I feel. I wouldn’t want Allison or anyone else to feel insulted by any of these comments. I think that fact that we are all willing to discuss this as openly as we are is a tribute to AM and her fans. :)

Well we all hit snags all the time. It’s how life is. I must say, the project of your is not bad, at all. Besides I’m sure that you’ll get your project done. Just in the nick of time. I am most interested in seeing it when it comes out on Independent film. And I sure do love Independent films, aint top of the line, worth spending money on too.
Don’t listen to what other people may say.
I’m thinking of writing several things that came into mind.
If you need something to relax your mind or ponder what sort of kook I am. I decided to post a blog, which make me sound like a loon.
It was a spur of the moment, I couldn’t resist it.
Anyways I should get, going have safe happy holidays and a new year.
May the creativity flow through thy pen.

This is a blog – not a newspaper or television. She should be allowed to say what she wants to say and not be censored on her own site.

@ bourdieu: You may very well look at the merchandise as any other movie related materials, but this time you know exactly where your money go to. It’s like you help making the movie. Maybe donations isn’t quite the right word here since you get something with that money but who cares? You got the point of it… So what’s with all this? I’d probably do the same thing if I was in that situation… :)

    Hi Allison,

Congratulation, about your short film project “Alice & Huck”.
    See ya…. Happy Holiday…

  • Phil Damico

Hi Allison, I would like to buy one of your special packages for $500.00. I am not rich and dont use credit cards as I dont really believe in them, pay interest, I dont think so. Would you be interested in cash? If so let me know how I can could send it to you, you have my email. Please let me know, I would love to be of some sort of help, because it would be great to see you do another project. I was an extra in a He inz commercial competition, and that was really cool. Well best of luck and let me know. Happy Holidays and good luck with your project and survey!

  • eitje

Allison – glad to donate. Will I be on IMDB? :D

Phil – looks like the donations go through paypal. You should be able to hook paypal up to your checking account and donate. Better hurry, too! As of my post, there are at most only 3 packages left. :)

Asshats – It’s not very nice to come to someone’s blog and rip on them. It’s kind of shameful, actually. I certainly hope that your posts here were the low point of your day, rather than the high point.

    ps – Cheekycrissy – good info. :)

Hey Allison, just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you that I love your acting on Smallville and trust that your short film project will prove to be no different. It is great to hear you encourage us to look for what we love best and go for. I graduate from UBC in Vancouver before going on to seminary in California, ending up in Brazil as an evangelical missionary. I guess growing up in British Columbia and living in Vancouver for a few years brings Smallville closer to my heart. I pray you get the funds you need. I am unable to contribute right now. But, God has given you quite a talent and the fact that you are using it well makes you a role-model for many. Keep up the good work. Lisa

I told it to you once, that I was going to support you on anything you want. So, in this opportunity, I’ll give you a prove of that.

This is my christmas gift for you my precious Allison!!! I’ve donated to let your project dream come true!

I utterly believe in you, that’s the reason why I haven’t thought twice before giving this donation. I hope this project brings you a lot of happiness. This night I will sleep full of peace and with a smile drawn in my face, because I will know that I’ve contributed with your happiness and self-realization. I want that you know that if money wasn’t my restriction I would have already given the 7500 bucks.

Merry Christmas Alli and good luck :D

  • Ann

Wow! That’s a lot of comments! lol I just found your blog and I am surprised at how much you actually write on here. Your soul is beautiful and I love your passion for people and arts. I am trying to get out to India this summer to help with and Orphanage. Want to come along? ;o) The offer is real, but i know how likely that would be. But give it a thought. Anyhow I will see what I can do about supporting the movie when I pick up my work check tomorrow. I am a poor college kid after all. lol! Well…I look forward to your other posts. Merry Christmas!

  • bourdieu

Please don’t misunderstand, my reference to the cost of a first class Atlantic flight was not meant as a gratuitous jibe, but made in comparison to the comment about hoping to have enough money after Christmas to buy a $25 t-shirt.

It highlights a very great gap in wealth, power and resources.

You see, this blog is doing a number of curious things. At one level, it cheerfully intervenes in a complex relationship structured very strongly in terms of power. That relationship is nominally “celebrity” and “fan” but it also takes in real power – symbolic, cultural and economic capital – as the $25 t-shirt shows very clearly.

Now an intervention is great, but it can be also very fraught and demands conscious choices by those who have power in the relationship.

At another level, the blog also has a strong and consistent message, which is all about individualism and (I think) consumerism. Not consumerism in a literal sense of shopping, but as an approach to life. Life and the world are there to be taken; everything is available. This has implications in terms of time (“living in the moment”) and especially in terms of politics. The message of the blog doesn’t see the world in terms of power relationships and which social circumstances create those, but as if everyone has equal capacity to consume life and the world.

This comes back to the comment about the saving for a $25 t-shirt to “be part of the art”. It opens many difficult questions about who has power and why, and what those with power choose to do with what they control and how they allow it to be accessed.

In this small instance, it’s celebrity and fans and inviting “donations” for a short film . A different political choice might have been to note the regular contributors to the blog and send them all autographed copies of the film when it is finished; or inviting fans into the creative process; or many other choices.

  • Turok3262

Bourdieu, it sounds like you’re misreading Bourdieu. And misreading Allison Mack. In her blog she’s offered us all several ways to be mindful and present and creative in our lives. The short film sounds like it’s just one more. This individualism is not the luxury of celebrity. We can do many things mindfully. We can clean our kitchen that way. “Carefulness is the cape of grace,” said a singer I admire. And it applies to all of us.

And she by no means has the power here the way you describe. Power is way more complicated than that. It is just as much created by you, with your interest, with your commitment to commenting on her blog. You participate in a dialogue here. A dialogue, of course, where you voice what you want the world to look like. That’s your contribution. That’s your power.

But it seems to me that instead of disparaging the blog your energy might be better used in creating a world that articulates what you envision. Maybe you find a less commercial way to support the art Allison is creating. Maybe you find a way of creatively responding to her creative endeavours. Or maybe you just carefully clean a kitchen. But I guess my point is it is all your choice.

What I admire and enjoy about this blog is that it makes choices. Crazy creative choices. It inspires me. That said, I’m going out looking for leaves again. Happy Holidays everyone.

Hey allison, i am very happy to hear these news.
I wanted to see you in other roles, I mean, I love seeing your Chloe but I love watching more things about you.
You are a great great great actress and Chloe Sullivan is cool, but you can do things better than Ms Sullivan.

You should think of playing a Drama, you’ll be GREAT GREAT in a drama, please think of it.
You have a lot of potential, a potential we haven’t seen yet, I am sure of that.

Because of it, my girlfriend and I will help in your new movie and I hope to see more things about you soon.

ps: alli, listen to me, (now anyone can hear us hahahaha), you should take more sexy photos!!! You look so so so so hot!!.. (here misslane sighing hehe) do you know a thing?? You have a SEXY AND BEAUTIFUL BACK! hmmm hehehehe..

  • http://www.daybow.com DavidHayes1956

I finally raised the 2 dollars and eleven cents necessary to bribe the man holding my Allison Mack Birthday greeting hostage into releasing the footage we shot 5 months ago! … At least he released one of 6 skits that were to make up the video greeting. It broke my heart when the video didn’t get finished. Now part of it has shown up just as I have entered a world without such luxuries as home internet service, television, appliances or a bed. It wasn’t what I asked for for Christmas, but at least it’s something. And I still have my two front teeth! (Since I’m 51 now, those two front teeth should have fallen out by now. It’s kind of strange having those baby teeth up front like that.) Anyway, you can look at the preview of the birthday message on You Tube and if you want to help me finance the bribe to recover the rest of the skits (Come on folks — with the writer’s strike on, it’s the only new … slightly recycled material that you’ll get), please buy a pencil from me (generously donated to me by studio executives). I’ll be the one with the tin cup in front of the Canton, Ohio Salvation Army building!

Gee Bourdieu thanks for making me sound completly broke when you said “It highlights a very great gap in wealth, power and resources” When I said “If I had the extra money I would donate in a heartbeat. Maybe after Xmas I’ll have a little extra and can buy a tee shirt” It was only because it’s around a bad time of the year with spending too much money for Xmas.

    Hi Allison,

It’s been awhile since I’ve been to your website.Alice and Huck sounds like a good film, hope you raise the money to fund it. Have a Happy New Year!

  • Joy

Well I just looked at the pictures and the video and the film looks great! I can’t wait to see it. Its great that you get to help out and do something that you love all the time. I can see why it was so fulfilling!

When you mentioned about doing something that you love and just driving in and doing it reminded me of how much I want to be a photographer. I’ve always wanted to just get one of those really really expensive cameras and just travel and go where ever I want to whenever I want to take pictures of anything that comes my way. Unfortunately, thats never going to happen. But its always something fun to think about.

I also hope Kristens and your survey is going well and you guys are getting the information you need.

I can’t wait for the next blog :)
    JOY

Jennifer, don’t stress about Bourdieu. He’s actually got a lot of flaws in his logical statements, so its a bit difficult to really read and understand what his main point is, anyway.

Firstly, there’s a heck of a lot of assumptions being made in order to jump to the conclusion that there is a mis-use of celebrity status. On top of the assumptions, there are also fallacies spattered throughout his posts with regards to the honesty and foreclosure statements that he made.

With regards to honesty and disclosure, people who wish to contribute to this project have an exact account of where there money is being spent on; “to finish this baby,” as stated by Allison. Additionally, we also know that there is an honest and equal trade for all monies given to the project, either a tshirt or a sponsorship package. Both items are being sold at their worth, or what is being regarded as their worth in relation to fair market values.

By her usage of the phrase “to finish” implies that there has already been enough funding done “to start” the project, meaning she has done her job that far as a producer for the movie; a person to find the money. Additionally, she is clearly continuing to do her job by “finding” money.

Additional information given to us by Allison was that her website is not the only place she is seeking support, as she has alternative methods also to raise money. She does not go into detail with regards to those methods with the exception of mentioning “grants.” This can logically infer that she is not requesting the full amount needed to be finished from her fans, but rather is using a myriad of methods in order to get her project finished.

Bourdieu also mentioned a clear and distinct separation in class and power, which he feels is evident with the difference in price between the two items, but as far as I can see, they just seem like two items for sale with the proceeds going to an event. To guess upon any symbolic meaning behind the decision to sell only two items, both at extreme prices, is simply that… a guess. The simple fact behind the two items is that the project is not ready to begin selling additional branded items because the brand itself is not complete. These are limited edition items, and are being sold as such. Once the branding is complete, more items at a broader price range will be available. As far as separation of class and power, this is the internet, not India. A super wealthy person could feel just as good about themselves by purchasing a tshirt, while a middle class or lower class person could spend all of their savings on a sponsorship package. In either case, they are still contributing because they care a great deal, not because they have power or are in a specific class level. Naturally those with more money have more power, but its also clearly evident throughout history that those with more actions can have an even greater deal of power than those who choose to sit around and complain or be apathetic. So, in a way, the power levels can potentially be split by “those who contribute to society” and “those who don’t” but, as with levels of wealth, that is also something that we cannot determine by the purchase of these two particular items.

So, if the actual question here is “perhaps the sponsors should know more about the movie before contributing” then that can be done. If the actual question is “maybe a contract should be made,” then that can be done. But the general criticism that is coming with regards to class and power are not logical statements with regards to the borderless, ageless (with the exception that one must be 13+), timeless, and classless environment are not valid and do not contribute to the site, as there is no sure way to obtain this type of information and know that it would all be valid and true.

The facts remain. Allison’s producing a project. She’s searching for funding in a number of different ways. She’s trading products for their worth in money as a method of funding parts of this product. People who choose to participate in this portion of her site know exactly where their contributions are going, as do the people who choose to participate in her MackEvents or in her blog entries. These are all clearly spelled out in this blog.

I hope that clears up a few things and fixes the logical statements a bit to be, well, more in-line with logic.

    Tabby,

Thank you for allowing Bourdieu to have his say and thank you for answering his concerns. John Schneider was able to finish his movie with similar, grass roots efforts like the one that Allison is employing.

To set the record straight on my fund raising efforts to get my videos released from the hands of the film editor I want to make it clear that I have two types of pencils to sell depending on the social standing of the person buying them — 2 cents for the regular pencils and 5 cents for the sharpened ones … I jab the non-supporters with the sharp ones … which results in more unsharpened pencils to sell.

Well spoken Tabby. That’s exactly it. You don’t donate, you’re not gonna show up at the end of the movie. All you do is buy some stuff that is gonna help the movie get out there. They’re items of a future brand. I really can’t see where the use of extra power is in this case. It’s not like she forces anybody to buy that. It’s just an intriguing way to involve the community here help finish this project. Would it be better if there was just a PayPal account and you wouldn’t get anything in exchange? I’m sure that even if it was so people would have helped out. At least Allison has been honest and creative.

I think you should be careful suggesting that the sponsorship package is priced at a value equal to what is being purchased. Clearly Allison isn’t spending $500 on the contents of each package or there would be no money made by this “fundraiser.” What’s included in the package?

    t-shirt,
    signed poster,
    signed script,
    kaleidiscope key-chain,
    a DVD copy of it.

The true market value of these items is about $20 for the t-shirt, $10 for the poster, $5 for the keychain and $25 for the DVD. That’s a total of $60. Don’t know how to value the script or the autographs or your name at the credits, but it’s a stretch, imo, to suggest they make up the remainder of the $500 being asked for.

Of course, I think most of the folks here are adults capable of making their own decisions. If this package is worth $500 to you, that’s your call. To me, however, there’s a different issue at hand and that is the (perhaps inadvertent) bait and switch that seems present. What’s being marketed is the opportunity to invest in the making of a film, to essentially be a producer. But producers traditionally receive a portion of any profits. Perhaps no profits will be made. But if money is made, there is nothing in place to allow the people who invested through this site to see their fair share of what is made.

So, if this movie makes money, will the “investors” who sponsored the project through the purchase of a $500 sponsorship package see a proportional amount of the profit?

Yes, a contract could be written, but it hasn’t been. To me, this is an example of good intentions gone awry. There’s nothing wrong with entrepreneurial spirit. But just because the internet makes it exceedingly easy for money to change hands doesn’t mean basic legal protections should be thrown out the door.

There are contracts in the process for those who requested it.

There is the matter of the credit, which makes up the difference with regards to the items being sent in the package.
