Haiku

A little late– sorry, guys. Those of you who have a Juicy Peach calendar might have recognized I’m a little late announcing the next Mack Event! Now, I’m playing a bit of catch up and will announce it: the next celebratory event is to write a haiku on your bathroom wall! Remember writing haikus for your third grade poetry project? I certainly do, and they always seemed so peaceful and serene.

So I’m trying to bring some of that peace and calm into my somewhat insane existence right now. I thought, “Just focus on a haiku.” It’s nice to have something so simple to focus my manic energy on, you know? A simple 5-syllable line, then a 7-syllable line, then another 5-syllable line are all the poem requires!

So either write your own or someone else’s, but take a bit of time to enjoy the simplicity of this beautiful little poem. Oh, and the whole bathroom part is just to keep things interesting… And also because I’m a little tired of reading about the horrors of capitalism and that Johnny loves Mary on the bathroom walls of my favorite restaurants… But since I can’t exactly encourage you all to deface public property by writing on public bathroom walls, I figured I would suggest writing it on your own wall. but the point really is just to write it.

OK! Have fun, and photograph, scan, or just send in whatever you have written! I’ll submit mine ASAP, but here is an example to let you know what the darn poems look like in the first place.

Ciao,

Allison

Awesome idea! I can’t wait to get started on this one! I also love the idea about writing on the bathroom wall, how creative! It’s about time that something interesting be written on the walls of bathrooms everywhere haha :) I LOVE Haikus! And yes, I definitely remember being given this assignment in grade school:) Wonderful idea…love it!

  • Rachel

Wow thats interseting. I have never herd of a hakius. Oh and I meant to ask…how do you type so neatly with no mistakes EVER!?!?! None the less I will research hakius and get right on it *thumbs up*.

  • Maryline

HAHA! I really love the idea…I’ll probably not deface public property…but I can deface my property =).
    I’ll send the photo asap.
Oh just one question…Where do you find all these ideas? It’s amazing…seems that they came so…easily.
    Take care.

  • Tara L

Wow, this is an awsome idea! At first, I didn’t recognize ‘haikus’, so I looked it up, and after I saw what it was, it looked familar, so maybe I did do it when I was in elementry school. Anyways, this is a creative idea, and I also love the bathroom part. :) At least something else will be written in bathrooms instead of the ‘so and so was here’, LOL! Have a wonderful day!And can’t wait to see what everyone else comes up with! :) :):)

  • Michael

    HI Allison,
Is that it for Smallville because of the strick? If so that really sucks that we don’t get a proper ending of some sort. Sorry you don’t get to direct either.
You will be fine, you’re always working.
    Good work too.
Will miss you and the show, Cloe was he best character.

    Hi Allison and fellow commenteers,

This darn exercise (I’m so uneducated I didn’t even know what a haiku was) is a great bit of fun…but blimey does it make you appreciate the work it takes writers to create from a blank page!

So here goes my little attempt…

What does a new day bring?
A Smile,a Sigh, Laughter and Tears,
    A New Dawn,Let Adventure Begin

    Hi Allison!!
    This is so cool!!!
Ok here is my haiku, I hope you like it:

    Red tulips are nice,
    a sunflower turns around
    in the sunny sky.

  • Darwin

    You say…Haiku…

    I say…Gesundheit…

    Or …bless you…

It so happens that I have an extemporaneous gift for Haiku…
because it’s length falls within the boundries my attention
    span quite nicely.

    Okay…

    Barely…

    But the point is…it’s there.

Within the limits of my attention span.

    Pushing the limits…but within.

    The Sun in Winter
Holds the promise of the Blossom’s
    Beauty In the Spring

  • Darwin

Wait! A wise woman told me that I added an extra syllable
to the second line of my Haiku…

so…ignore the “the” in the second line…and all is well…

Which also gives me opportunity to pose the question:

Miss Mack…How is that YOU found yourself in a
public washroom (therefore MEN’S washroom) where
Johnny was declaring his love for Mary in bathroom wall
    graffitti?

  • litew8

Horrors of capitalism? What Socialist / Communist driveled bathroom walls are you reading? Must suck where you go. Maybe I should stop comming to this website.

Roses are red, violets are blue -
    Commies suck,
    and so does this haiku.

  • Phil J

A Haiku huh? I sure wish I could have been doing those in public school.

    sigh.

    Well here it goes:

    For this night won’t last
    Your new dawn craving purpose
    Will you crave for Him?

There’s something very cathardic about writing these, searching to insert meaning in so few words. It really gets the mind and soul pumping. Thanks Allison :) . I really hope things continue to look up for you, and you continue to find unique and amazing ways for you (and I) to express yourself and find success.

    Blessings,
    Phil J

Oh Allison…I can always count on you to make my mom wonder what the hell i am doing with a camera… stalking around my house… taking pictures in a handstand position. Or something along those lines. :D
Now.. i wonder what she’s going to think when im writing haikus on my bathroom wall.
Hey, if she can spill oil paint on the carpet and go on with her merry little life, I can deface my bathroom!
Now.. politics on the highschool bathroom wall would be great..
usually its so and so did this and that..
or so and so is this… or the famous call me at this number..
I haven’t had the pleasure of getting something nasty written about me yet.. those evil highschool girls :D
if i wrote on a bathroom wall it would probably be something out of the ordinary.. maybe a quote.. in a different language?
“Yes highschool world.. i am not writing about what jessica did at the party last night” it would totally scream that anyways..
Anywho, im going to vandalize my bathroom now :D

I just found your blog today and I love love love *insert word GREATER than love* it! You’re so thoughtful and inspiring, someone I can definately look up to.

Juicy Peach was a crazy coincidence for me today. I had just been thinking about how important the arts, especially music, is to me. Then I realized how unlucky it is for the people who aren’t exposed to that. After all, you have to be able to express yourself in SOME way.

And lastly, totally excited that I get to do a MackEvent! I’m going to write a haiku tonight and *oh no!* write it in on my school’s bathroom wall. There’s so much racism in my school that this should make it cheerful!

    Toodles!,

    Kelly

  • Jennifer

I’ve never heard of Haiku before,I’ll go Google it and learn more about it then try and come up with something.

    I have my own restaurant…

and…. on the wall of the ladies bathroom… awww… a lot of OBSCENE and NASTY WORDS about other women

but on the wall of the men bathroom… a few of OBSCENE WORDS…
and a lot of jokes about sex parts of the body..

    talking about graffitis……
my conclution is … women graffitis are more naughty and nasty than men graffitis !!!

  • Jonathan

Sorry if this isn’t the tone you were thinking of, but I read this, and thought of a shirt my sister bought.

    “Haikus are easy
But sometimes they don’t make sense

Hope it brings a smile to your insane existence :)

Heres my haiku after two days of pondering…

    “Snow”: by Rachel

    Gental and softly
    It falls so beautifully
    Cleansing to my soul

That was really fun! Now all I have to do is write it on the bathroom wall. Im off!!

  • http://www.mb2a.com Yannig

    Hello Allison,

    you often have funny ideas.

    I’m not a good writer, even ( still worse ? ) haïkus.

But I have a little suggestion, to write haïkus which are koans at the same time, just to go a little further.
But you can just stop everything, and, for a moment, just make nothing, just breath.

And another idea, just to laugh : people who wrote haikus should not open their bathroom to the public ?

    bye

    y.

  • http://www.mb2a.com Yannig

    really, who am I ?
if I think of it… or not,
    all is…or is not.

For every minute I’ve spent in that bathroom in the last couple of days all I’ve thought about was haikus. Then when I’ve found a nice one I couldn’t stop and made like four of them. OK, so some of my poems aren’t quite following the 5-7-5 format, but I’d look at them as abstract, modern haikus (that’s how every poet calls his weird poem right?). Here’s what I wrote:

    “Hope”
    Waiting to fall
    Another crystal drop
    Grows into the light

    “Time”
    An old tree in sight
    Childhood memories in mind
    This morning, faith.

    “Love”
    Shiny butterfly
    Trying to fly away
    Grey petals are closed

    “Me”
    Every morning
    The tiny silver birdie
    Knows i am awake

Anyhow, I’ll go think of something to make up for my mum. I don’t want no house arrest for the next week… :)

    Love you all,
    Adrian

  • BOUROUX

    Hi Allison.

I send to you 2 Haikus.
It’s a good idea to write a haiku on the miror of the bathroom. When you will read the haiku, you will see a smiling girl.

    To feel better,Al
Write a haiku on the mirror
    See a smiling girl

    Choco cake smell good
Less that the head of baby
    Both are fabulous

I look forward to reviewing Chloe next week.
    Have a good week.

    Bye
    Claude.

Life to me is very simplistic. Its awesome how a little peom can brighten your day so much. It’s amazing to me.. And i do remember(very much so) creating a few hiakus of my own in the third grade. Actually, now that i think of it, it seems like thats all we ever really did! And After we got done making the little master peices, we slapped them on some consuction paper and called it a Christmas present to our parents.. :s

I love listening to what you have to say and your veiws on life! I think a lot of the same things that you do, its cool to know that their is others out there that try to find a deeper meaning for their life.
Very glad im not alone, hope to meet you and Kristin one day, you both inspire me so much.

These are my first attempts at Haiku. I hope I understand the rules.

    ====

    Chloe loves Clark Kent.
Though that love will change and grow
    Clark will never know.

    ====

    Jimmy was her first.
Soon his time with her will pass.
    He won’t be her last.

    ====

    Lana loves Clark Kent.
But that love will change and slow
    Though Clark wants it so.

    ====

    Lois plays the field
With so many men of might.
    She will take the prize.

    ====

    Kara came to raise
Clark to be a man of steel.
    He taught her instead.

    Lex Luthor has hair.
    But, to his great discomfort,
    It grows in, not out.

    Hello,

I’ve found your site after purchasing “Smallville” Series 2, and doing a “Where are they now?” Wikipedia search. I’ve been without TV for the past few years, so I didn’t realise you’re still making the show! To be honest, I preferred the strong family values of the first few series. The performances and storylines were very engaging, with Season 2 in particular standing out. I’ve tried to capture the moral of the story in this humble haiku:

    One must earn your love
    Integrity cannot lose
    What it never gave

    Best wishes.

So, I’ve already made my entry and everything on a bathroom wall,

(and by the way it was sooo much fun doing it. i had been hoping that i could find a public restroom covered in writing, like huey’s or something, and write an amazing haiku in huge white-out letters, but i wanted to go ahead and get my entry in. but i WILL do that one day.)

but i wanted to let you know that for the past two days since i read your entry, I have been continuously writing haikus. It’s strange; before this week the last time I wrote a haiku was in 3rd grade and if I remember correctly, it was on the subject of an umbrella..

Anyway, they’re so satisfying, it’s unbelievable!
    Thanks for the inspiration.
    :D D

    Adapt to your world,
There’s no use dancing for rain
    Live for the present

    Be still, Breathe in, out
    Take in the moment, kid
    ‘Cause you’re still alive

    If I run faster,
Time still gets ahead of me
    How fast can I go?

    Live with no regrets,
Sleep not knowing what went wrong
    Tomorrow’s your day

    Add this to the list
    Of things to consider when
    Hope is running low

    You can change the world
Just one good thing at a time,
    You’ll have an impact

    I don’t follow them.
I take the road less traveled,
    But I end up lost
