Hey everyone!
I hope the leap into spring is finding you all rejuvenated and inspired!
I recognize I haven’t written in a while and I apologize for that. It seems like all too often life gets away from me and I become a professional at distracting myself from accomplishing the things I want to accomplish.
Recently the theme of my life that seems to be seeping into everything I am seeing and doing is: what does it mean to stand for something? What does it mean to have principles? What does it mean to understand the truth of something, come up against adversity, and continue to stand by what you believe in?
I have discovered a new respect for those who stand for what they know to be true and right. I find that it is only during the greatest adversity that you find your greatest truth. It’s easy to claim that you believe in something, but it isn’t until that belief is challenged that one is really forced to decide to what extent.
I saw the film “The Counterfeiters” recently, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the movie, it won Best Foreign film at the Academy Awards this year. It’s spectacular; I highly recommend it. Anyway, there is a character in the film that has a belief and stands for it. He knows a truth for himself and he’s willing to sacrifice his own life and comforts for this truth.
I was so moved by this character and his story and I began to think about all the great peaceful leaders of our time who stood for humanity, compassion, tolerance and understanding and I realized that although the beauty they inspired in the world was immense, it really didn’t take hold until after their death.
Then I began to wonder if, in fact, we truly don’t ever understand what we have or the value of what we are being presented until we are threatened with the loss of it… Until we face some form of adversity in order to attain or keep it.
I wonder if Gandhi’s voice would resonate so loudly had he not been killed? And Dr. King’s voice? And John Lennon’s voice?
It feels like their voices were amplified exponentially because of their willingness to die for their principles. This is so inspiring to me, and yet incredibly frightening and daunting. I want to believe I am a woman of character. I want to believe I am a woman of principle. I want to make an effect on the world and help people to see the beauty in life and relating. But I don’t know how far I am willing to take this. I don’t know how strong my character is. I feel like I am only now beginning to understand what it is I do believe in. Now the whole concept of actively going about taking steps to exemplify these beliefs is so scary.
I want to thank all of you. I want to thank you for your support and encouragement. I want to thank you for your joy and appreciation for my work and my wacky explorations. I feel that this site is a well that I often draw inspiration from when I am feeling low and frustrated. Thanks for tolerating the diatribe!
Have a beautiful day.
Yours appreciatively,
Allison

May 14th, 2008 at 9:40 pmExcellent discoveries. And they’ll continue to astound you in these next few years. You are always learning in life, always discovering and will throughout the extent of it. But there is something about the period of life between your late 20s to early 30s that is exceptional in the ways you come to know yourself, discover your strengths and beliefs and truly solidify a foundation for yourself throughout your life. Continue to be surprised by yourself and relieved as you really come to know who you are. It’s magical and mystical and yet so grounded and so real and tangible.
Good journey, AM.

May 14th, 2008 at 9:59 pmReading this blog entry just actually made me cry, and I’m still crying. You are absolutely amazing, and I am so proud to call myself one of your fans. We all love you, so much, and we support you, and we appreciate everything little thing that you do. I can at least say that much for myself, and I know others who feel the exact same way. Smallville would never be the same without you, and we all know it. You and your character are the most beautiful things about the show, at least in my opinion. I know I wouldn’t watch it without you, or without Chloe. So, supporting you is all my pleasure, and I’m more than honored to.

May 14th, 2008 at 10:17 pmHey Allison -
I think you are right - you can stand for something - inspire and lead the way for what you believe in -but when it is hard and you need to sacrifice something (like your life - or your pride) it adds a lot more meaning to “Standing” for something. I think that’s when you find out what you really believe in - thats when you decide who you want to be- and if what you believe in is real. Thanks Allison
you rock and have been an inspiration to me for years. -

May 14th, 2008 at 10:28 pmI never comment anymore, but this was such an exemplary post that I had to say something. I always wondered what society’s perception of King or Lennon would be like today if they had lived. Or if Lincoln or Kennedy had not been shot, would they have gone down in history so glorified as they did?
I want to thank you for having such a wonderful blog that inspires so many people.

May 14th, 2008 at 10:31 pmYour welcome Allison.
I find joy in reading your words. Knowing the actor’s true nature helps me love your acting much more. If people took more conservative and loving steps as you do. I think the world would be more open to communication. Keep up the good work. With the whole inspiring the masses I would find that to be so stressful and liberating. Although the names you named did the inspiring with such ease. I think the ease came from knowing their personal strengths. And we can all be encouraged by that. And they made equality worth dying for. I wish we as a world could help Myanmar. That is a different topic all together.
Ciao,

May 14th, 2008 at 10:43 pmThose are all good questions to have. It is in the wondering of things that really opens you up to new avenues of thought. I missed hearing your thoughts. I know that might sound a bit on the looney toons side, but some of the things that you write about are things that some of us might be asking ourselves. Any hoo, i love reading your blogs. You take care, and be safe:)

May 14th, 2008 at 10:51 pmThat was freaking amazing. Wow.
I totally agree with you about standing up for what you believe being daunting. I have looked in the mirror and asked myself that same question over and over again and wondered if I was really faced with something where I had to show my character, would I sell out?
But I think that if you truly believe in something, no matter how frightening it may seem you start to live for it, and it becomes what you get up in the morning for, what you want to see carried out on earth. And slowly, bit by bit you build up a strength, a confidence in your values and it is turned into undeniable passion for what you believe and somewhere along the way the passion blurs the line between being able to live for something and being able to have the strength to die for it until they are simply one thing. And the fear is gone.
(…if that makes any sense…it did in my head, but by the time it got out on the keyboard I’m sure it’s been muddled some!
)Anyways thanks so much for taking the time to write down your thoughts! They really are an inspiration to so many people and we’re so lucky to get to hear them from you! You rock!

May 14th, 2008 at 11:00 pmYou should go to pos-psych.com. It is a news site about positive psychology, or the study of human flourishing. The cornerstones of PP (for short) are developing strengths in both people and institutions. Notice I said, flourishing and not the more common term of happiness.
I’ve been involved with these fine researcher-practictioners since around 2000. I can say that I have learned some important empirical and theoretical implications for living the good life, however one defines it.
A large factor in living pleasurably is savoring. Don’t brush off the idea as simplistic or goofy. Everyone does that. Yet the science is very clear on this. The small acts of savoring increase pleasure and make it last longer.Allison, I read your musings and I can’t help but think that another practice might help you achieve a greater sense of wellbeing and less dissatisfaction. I myself used to overthink things. Rumination is the technical term. It comes from what cows do when chewing their cuds. They just keep grinding on the same worn out grass clump, over & over. There were two key findings very effective in reducing emotional pain to pursue my best self: avoiding overthinking and practicing optimistic behavior.
The Greek Stoics were intuitive about why we suffer mental anguish when we are actually just fine physically. PP’ers suggest that merely stopping rumination gives up mental space to pursue our dreams. Then the knockout blow comes from ACTING OPTIMISTICALLY.
One troubling theme that recurs throughout your writing is a sense of self-doubt. “Can I do this? Will I fail?” I see a lot of anxious thinking about your ability to seal the deal in your professional life. Will you attain your best self? I think that your rumination is trying to wear you down a bit. Those kinds of mental events reduce your power to carry out optimistic behavior.
To make a long story shorter, do something optimistic every single time you ruminate and you will not only achieve your best self, however you define it, but you’ll feel empowered and impress the hell out of your raving fans. You said that you don’t like to be alone. One big maxim of PP is that Other People Matter. You naturally followed your gut about what makes you happier and lo and behold, you short-circuited the rumination. Bravo.

May 14th, 2008 at 11:27 pmHi Allison,
Finding people with genuine principles is a rare thing indeed, and even harder to have those people stick by them.
It’s easy for me to talk the talk but i just trip or at best shuffle along when it comes to walk the walk.
You mentioned some of history’s great inspirations, well I’m sure even they had self doubts and were never perfect human beings.
I guess it’s important to remember what “your” truth is no matter how big or small, be true to yourself and just try and be a good person, sometimes we fall short of our own expectations, but there is always another day around the corner to try again.
We can get inspiration from history, or real events today or sometimes from fictional characters from books, plays, film and of course television, these all help us reflect on ourselves and try to be better truthful and kinder to others and ourselves.
Take care and keep having fun,
Robin

May 14th, 2008 at 11:53 pmI think the ultimate act of believing in your principles and your “own truths” is sacrificing your life. But you can do more when you are alive and well than when you’re dead (obviously). You can put your time, money, resources into an idea that you couldn’t do if you’re not alive.
The people you mentioned (King, Lennon, Ghandi) — the reason why their beliefs still carry on today is because how much of themselves they put into it. I think if they had a choice, they would choose to live so they could sacrifice more of themselves into their passions.
I guess what I’m trying to say is you can accomplish more when you’re alive.

May 15th, 2008 at 12:14 am“I wonder if Gandhi’s voice would resonate so loudly had he not been killed? And Dr. King’s voice? And John Lennon’s voice?”
Well, John Lennon wasn’t killed for anything he believed in, but he was a deeply political artist.
The link between politics and violence is strong, but not inevitable. Nelson Mandela is an example of someone who showed an alternative path when violence seemed the most likely response to change from both sides of a political divide, and he ennobled everyone by his actions.
Indeed, it is a very dangerous politics to assume that the most meaningful principles are those that are worth dying for. George W Bush has said as much in arguing for his Iraq adventure.
One of the points of democracy is that we don’t need to die for our beliefs.
So does the idea of principles have to involve the notion of sacrifice? Can it not more positively be understood as a call for action? So what are you willing to act for? Regime change in Burma? Defending a fellow actor against a bullying director? And what actions are meaningful? Do you throw your body against the machinery of the state or do you use language and argument to make change?
Difficult questions with no definitive answers after thousands of years of human endeavour. But nice to see the light of political awareness.

May 15th, 2008 at 2:41 amYou moved me to tears, again. This entry is beautiful and honest.
I respect and admire all those people who actively stand up for what they believe in - I think of people who fight to improve the human rights, who help to protect the environment, who help disadvantaged and vulnerable groups etc….there are so many of them out there… - sometimes in some of the most challenging circumstances.
I can’t imagine myself actively go out there and do what they do. I often wonder where they find the courage to overcome the fear of getting into real trouble (being hurt, arrested, tortured or even die is a real threat in some countries). I guess their beliefs and determination are stronger.
It is fiction but her willingness to put her own life and well-being on the line for the ones she loves and for the greater good, is one of the reasons I adore Chloe.
I’m only now beginning to express what I believe in, what I’m interested in and what I love, what I strive for in life and I’m learning not to give up. It is not always easy.
I’m far from ready or capable of joining some sort of group that stands for something I believe in. Maybe I won’t be able to do it in a spectacular way but, I want to do something meaningful in the world too. From small gestures to long-term support, I do what I can to make a difference.
Your blog is also a source of inspiration and a pick-me-up for me. You have given me courage to become my own person, to step out of my comfort zone and to truly live life.
I have become stronger and happier than I ever imagined possible. You have helped me find strength within myself. Thanks to you, I feel truly alive and I have embraced who I am.It is such a joy to watch you on television and to read your blog entries. You are not only a natural beauty, a very talented actress, a wonderful singer and a good writer but, you are also a genuinely good person who inspires people not to take life for granted and to look within themselves.
Thank you for being who you are and keep writing from your heart.

May 15th, 2008 at 5:47 amAs much as we point to martyrs and admire their sacrifices, it is often easier to die for your beliefs than to live for them. To hold true to principles over a long lifespan requires willpower, determination and self-examination. It is so easy to be derailed. Turning your cheek for a day is easier than turning your cheek for a lifetime. Does dying before your limit has been reached make you a better person?
I always think it is interesting to see stories based upon “Faust” … where someone is offered riches or fame or anything their heart desires in return for their soul. I don’t think that Satan would be so foolish to pay such a high price for something that can be had so cheaply. He need only pose as a rich businessman, walk down a street and let a dollar fall out of his pocket. How many people will casually pick it up and not make an effort to return it to him? Or he could pose as a cashier at a store and grossly undercharging for the merchandise people buy. How many people would make an effort to correct an error in the store’s favor? Most would consider it simply “evening the score a little” for wrongs they have suffered. The definition of “sin” is “missing the mark” — not meeting the standard that has been set for us.
Whether a person lives or dies should not color how we think of the message. The message can be an entirely different thing than the person that transmits it. Anything you find meaning in that makes you a better person is worthwhile no matter the source. Despite whatever R. Kelly has or hasn’t done as a person doesn’t diminish the inspiration I feel when I listen to “I Believe I Can Fly.”

May 15th, 2008 at 12:48 pmHey Ms. Mack!
Recently I went through that “7 Habits” course (by Stephen Covey) and basically the message is: “take control of your life”. So, that done, you surely will achieve all the other things you want to accomplish, including “stand for something”.
Not here to make advertisement, far from that. Just a big coincidence to read your last post and reckon the same subject you are talking about.
It sounds cheesy, cliche, and common sense, but put your thoughts lined up with a positive message is always good. Be it whatever it may be called. Hehehehehe…
Anyway, you too have a great one.

And I find myself thinking about all the time being challenged by others for what you believe in. It’s difficult for me, for example, to explain to my friends sometimes why I don’t drink or why I’m vegetarian because the reasons aren’t just the obvious..like health related or something.
So..it can be tough. But I find worth it to have such conviction about something. To be totally sure about at least that one thing if nothing else in life.Great stuff!

May 15th, 2008 at 7:20 pmAllison, that was truly an inspirational blog. In fact it inspired me today while talking with my mom on the phone. Her and I have never really seen eye to eye on beliefs and convictions but I’ve never told her what I truly believed before. A part of me was always worried about what she might think of me because of what I believe in. Whenever we talk about civil rights, politics, etc. I pretty much didn’t say anything. I’m very liberal and she is completely the opposite. Today, while on the phone with her, we were talking and I actual gave her my beliefs and views on a particular matter and we had an actual intelligent discussion. I’ve always been afraid to tell her what I thought and by being honest with her today it really opened my eyes to being honest with others. Our discussion today would never have happened if I wouldn’t have just read your blog.
You are a true inspiration and I’m going to try to be more honest and stand by my beliefs from now on in my own little way. Thank you for opening my eyes. Your intelligence, honesty and willingness to share your thoughts with us is extremely inspirational. Take care of yourself and have a great weekend. Lisa

May 15th, 2008 at 8:42 pmIt is funny to realize that the people who truely had a vision and the strength to stick it out are never fullly admired untill they are taken from us. We just keep absorbing all they have to tell us, but when our cord is cut off from their brilliance we seem to freak and then go back to all the things they have said and ehance their genius. I like to think of Jonathan Larson when this is thought of, he is the creator of RENT and his rock opera is so truely inspiring and real and touching that it amazes me it all came from one man and his life experiences. But it breaks my heart to know that he wasn’t here to experience just how many lives his work touched and moved, he saw the full performance once, did an interview and then went home and passed.
I also like to think I have the courage to keep my faith in the things I believe strongly for when the face of adveristy stares me down. I know I have strong beliefs but they have never been challegened, that can be good or bad I suppose. But above all I just know you have to believe in something and as long as I have a few concrete things to stand for I am content.
Thank you for always being so inspiring!

May 15th, 2008 at 8:47 pmWell that was a nice post to read, kind of gives me the feeling that even though your talking to so many people, you make it seem like your talking to me directly. And that in itself is a gift. It also makes me think about my future, and I’m going to university to study Psychology in a 4 year program so I am beginning to understand the way people think, how things cross someones mind, and yet you would never know that it did. Most people are fighting everyday, but they’ll never tell you. Its what going on below the surface that really matters. And i know this really isn’t involved in your blog, and I shouldn’t bring it up, but i have too. I’m so glad you have signed on for another whole season of Smallville. I had my doubts about it, and without you on the show, I wouldn’t be watching it anymore. So keep your chin up, and your stick on the ice. lol

May 15th, 2008 at 10:59 pmI think the whole purpose of this life is learning to love…and there is an old Taoist saying that caring grows courage.
It is a process.
Although not EVERY battle for good in life requires throwing oneself on a grenade so to speak…for the benefit of others…Most in fact…simply require LIVING for something…and making a difference while you do.
I know of many relationships where one spouse would willingly die for the other…but at the same time would ALSO happily strangle them for squeezing the toothpaste in the middle.
What I am saying is…people shouldn’t wait for THE BIG THING…the ultimate sacrifice…until they “prove” thier love…or their character.
It should an all the time everyday…every moment event…
Not just wait to save someones life…but to improve someone’s life while you are able…
WE need more people doing that everyday…and then maybe the BIG messes would not come so often.
But the big messes need taking care of as well…and when one is well practiced at the everyday stuff…the big “standing for something” moments are just that much easier…
Because you have stood for something all along.

May 15th, 2008 at 11:49 pmFunny you should write about standing up for what you believe in. I was in a situation today where I had to do the same thing and seriously think about how far I was willing to go for that belief. And I discovered I was willing to go pretty far, without fear, which is a nice thing to know.
I’ve come to believe that part of playing this human game is to continue to stretch, to discover, and to feel. And it’s in that process that you find out just how amazing and powerful you really are. And by discovering and harnessing that power, you can change the world.
So keep searching, and learning, and standing up for your beliefs. We are all amazing creatures deserving of respect and understanding. And along the way, strength appears. And with that strength, true self-worth.

Most people answer themselves in the negative. It is quite simple. No one knows their capcity, no one knows their limit. Only God knows that. Put your mind to whatever your dreams are and do them even when you think you can’t. Most likely you will succeed.

I highly recommend it, as well.
Also, i want to say that this week has come a nurse of Doctors without borders ( Médicos sin fronteras, in spanish) to my high school, she has showed us some photos, some experiencies of the countries where she has been working for some years and i have to say that this kind of people are real heroes. They fight for what they believe in, they go where they are needed and they show us that principles are importants and maybe sometimes this principles are worthy to die for.

Well said. This isn’t weakness, it isn’t lack of resolve; it is wisdom. Because as inspiring and as moving as absolute commitment may be–up to and including martyrdom–can we ever be sure we’re doing the right thing? Moral choices are rarely clear cut. And I suspect it is in precisely those cases where we are SURE we are in the right that we should take a thorough second look.
Being scared, being uncertain, can be supremely valuable.

I came to your blog when I realized you were my favourite smallville character. Ive been keeping tabs on this site for a good year or so now but have never left a comment.
Its really inspiring to see someone who is a very talented actress have so much more to them than what first meets the eye. I love the way you question everything in life and at the same time you manage to look at it in such a way to get the most out of life, I’ve been trying to do the same myself these days. Your already an inspiration to so many people so don’t kill yourself just to amplify your beliefs hah

May 17th, 2008 at 7:54 pmHey Allison,
Another great blog posting…
As far as standing up for what you believe in, I think that a lot of people become pessimistic about their place in the world because they have grand idealistic ambitions, which I don’t discourage because it’s great to want to change the world. What I think is so important yet overlooked is that standing up for what you believe doesn’t have to be something that will go down in history like King and Ghandi. If you act/react to the world in ways that are consistent with the principles you’ve established for, you’ve succeeded in standing for your beliefs. Most of the time, it’s smaller private situations that test our mettle, and most of the time, there isn’t a cost attached to standing strong.
So keep up the faith and be confident in your actions and your character will take care of itself.

I came across this quote, which helps me in times when I feel guilty for being overly ambitious (not just career-wise, but for when my “save the world” mentality kicks in too):
“If it’s in you to climb you must - there are those who must lift their eyes to the hills - they can’t breathe properly in the valleys. God help them if there’s some weakness in them that prevents their climbing.” - L.M. Montgomery
Thank you so much for having this site up. Only having recently discovered it, it’s a great outlet, and I look forward to hearing more from you.

In real life, to be respected, it is sometimes necessary to fight and not be afraid to tell the truth. It sometimes require the things you want. It is going to take his place, otherwise it is another who takes.
Throughout this process of defending convictions he going to accept that others may think differently and that compromise is often the only issue.
Your character Chloe is surely a source of inspiration for you as it is for your fans.

It helps me when I pray to Jesus, and ask him that he helps me effect the world around me. And a week ago I feld how he helped me effect a person live.

May 19th, 2008 at 6:42 pmWhen reading your blog post i asked myself whether the people that you mentioned, such as john lennon were ready to die for those beliefs. If you think hard enough i doubt anyone out there can truly say that they would die for their beliefs. What i believe in is very important to me but family and love mean more to me than the beliefs. Beliefs are mine and mine alone and i stand behind them but would i die for them? I certainly would not run away from what i believe in but i know i would run TO anyone i love who needed me.
Sadly in this day and age people have forgotten certain beliefs, in fact a lot of kids today have no idea what to believe in. When i have children of my own one day i wont tell them this and this to believe in, i will tell them that if they are going to believe in anything, make sure you believe in yourself first, because if you cant believe in yourself then who can you believe in. -

Even not the most identical twins.
Evereyone of us has his own destiniy, and no, by destiny i dont mean we have no choice, whatever we’re going to do, can change the developmnt our life.
But, anyone is “made” from different “material”, and it aint always good to dye for your goal.
Even if its one of the importants of the human race.

May 20th, 2008 at 3:36 pmAllison,
I began watching Smallville back when if first aired on the CW, and it was probably the only show that I made sure to watch every week. However as life became busy with work and college, and days quickly blurred into weeks and weeks into months, I fell behind on the series.
Now newly married, my wife and I have spent the past several months “catching up”, watching seasons 4-6, and eagerly awaiting season 7 to come out on DVD. While watching the series, we have come to admire your poise and prowess as an actress and we both agree that Smallville would not be as entertaining without the investigative reporting, the bright smile, and the comforting and thought provoking comments of Chloe Sullivan.
She and I were discussing the other evening after we finished season 6, and Chloe’s crypto power was finally revealed, what we thought Allison Mack was like in real life, away from the scripts, lights, and cameras. Our questioning led us to this blog and I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised and intreagued by the questions you have raised in your May 14 posting. It seems that you possess a great logic and love of life and your deep questions pay testament to your personality, although the most that I know you is through your one posting.
Concerning your thoughts, if I may comment. I feel as though within the United States, it is easier for one to merely go with the crowd, to dress as everyone believes you should dress, to act as society does, and to even believe what the world tells you to. It takes a certain power and resolve to believe what you do, which the majority of people believe in something. However it takes extaordinary power and resolve to actually act on what one believes which makes the lives and beliefs of Ghandi, Dr. King, and even Christ as provoking and awe inspiring as they are.
The power of words and beliefs are useless without the willingness to act and show by example what is right and true.I am a 25 year old man, who graduated with a degree in entrepreneurship, marketing, and management, who is recently married to the love of his life, will soon own his father’s business, and hopes to one day have a family. I have trials of my own, but know nothing of the trials of being a young actor/actress and constantly being in the public eye. Your questions are seeking truth, and are trying to find meaning for your life. I pray that you find that truth, and that you may overcome the obstacles that may befall you…Evan

Paulyn Says:
May 20th, 2008 at 11:43 pmYeah, I agree that sometimes the only way for people to really hear what it is that someone is saying is for that person to sacrifice themselves. I don’t mean “to die for their beliefs”. I don’t think that it’s just the people that give their lives that are inspiring, but those who sacrifice themselves and LIVE for their beliefs. I think it’s a lot more difficult to live for something rather than be willing to die for it. Living for something takes effort, effort that most people aren’t willing to put in. You think about other people like Mother Teresa. She made a different kind of sacrifice, to help others while she lived at the expense of her own comfort. She didn’t have to speak for you to hear what she was saying. That’s when you know that someone really and truly stands for something.
As far as not knowing how strong one’s character is… I don’t think anyone knows. Because there will always be a “greater challenge” out there looming, we will never be able to understand just what it is our character can withstand. I think beliefs evolve. Thus, making it impossible to completely understand them. I think life is about change, and if we remain constant (even with what we think is good) we will never be able to live to our full potential. Adversity is just another catalyst for change. We either give in and remain the same, or we rise above and grow.

May 21st, 2008 at 3:07 pmI’m writing from Lima, Perú; and even though now we are rising as a country, there was a time were people actually died for defending their beliefs, in hand of terrorism…
First things first, i ended up in your site by mistake; but it really surprised me (in the good way) that you have this kind of page-blog goin’ on here…
It seems that movie really touched you enough to inspire you to think about the importance of standing for what you think is right…
But, if we land this thought, we don’t need to be a political or cultural leader to make the difference… it’s the little changes what makes the difference between living our mark on this world. I think that the most important thing that we can live behind is to transcend, to touch other people and in some kind of way, contribute to make them grow, and grow ourselves with them. We all can stand for our beliefs, but it’s not easy when the time to do it really come our way …
You Allison have a huge advantage, a tool that you can use to touch the most of people, to make the difference and stand for your beliefs. Your craft can spread wider than most of us, and the important thing is that it seems that you are keeping it real, please don’t ever lose that.
I don’t know if you have the time to review all of the comments here, but to all the people that actually can, remember that you all have the power to change things as long as you really want it, I wish the best for all of you.

May 21st, 2008 at 4:30 pmDearest Allison,
One thing I will never have to do is “tolerate” you. Your presence is always welcome and wonderful. Ya know, those wacky explorations aren’t so wacky. Here’s what’s cool:
When one becomes aware of these things, one can begin to take preventive measures. When more and more people are preventing the preventable, life on earth can get pretty good. Of course the challenge is, when it is you who is called upon to stand up. I think at some point, we are all confronted with this.
It is often said, “Character is who you are when you are alone.” I must respectfully disagree. I say, “Character is who you are when you are challenged.”Nudginawink

May 21st, 2008 at 6:40 pmHey Allison,
Great to hear from you. You are absolutely right when you say that you don’t truly know what your convictions are until you are challenged to defend them.
I personally have experienced that idea a long time ago when I was I was in junior high school. There wasn’t much diversity in the school, and I was one of the two Muslims there, and one of the few Pakistanis there as well. People would chastise me everyday about my faith and ethnic background. I tried everything: ignoring them, being sarcastic, yelling, threatening to report them to the principal. Nothing seemed to get them off my back because I let them see that I was affected by them.
What did help me cope with it was being even more vocal about my beliefs and my cultural background. I really wanted to educate people and let them know what I am about. Every chance I got to explain myself, such as in class presentations, or just talking to friends, I took and tried to get rid of some of the lack of knowledge people seemed to display.
Through it all, I think I have become stronger in defending who I am when I am attacked by others. I made a promise to myself that I would not let people attack me without defending myself in a respectful way.
It has become a reflex now whenever people put my faith and cultural background in question.
What I do appreciate it is when people ask questions rather than assume something about me. They are afraid of asking “stupid” questions, but it’s better to ask than carry on with an assumption, as I say.
Allison, you have a wonderful and pure heart. I trust that you that you will find your calling in trying to change the world. I have faith that you will find it.
Everyone finds it at different points in their lives. We just have to pay attention to those turning points where we decide if we should change the world or keep living as we are. I know you will choose the former when that situation presents itself to you.
Stay true to yourself because we appreciate it and love it!
Yours appreciatively,
Aysha -

May 22nd, 2008 at 1:30 amAllison, you got a point. Principles is something that we must protect. But talking about principles we don’t must always stand to protecting our principles even we will die or killed. We can retreat for some time and socialize to get more people to fight alongside with us. Just like Gandhi, like what you said he protect his principle even dead approach him and he also inspired the local people to follow his principle. Because one man can’t beat a platoon of people. So retreat when protecting principle is also a solution. Because we can back later with more power and friends even when we die we still have friends to protect our principle. Well, yes Gandhi passed away but his principle still alive. And maybe his principle live inside your heart too.

May 22nd, 2008 at 2:43 pmFolks:
I am a newcomer both to this blog and the Smallville universe (though I have some small familiarity with the Superman legend) so maybe it’s just a function of having graduated from college before most of you were born. (Ms. Mack, that doesn’t detract from my admiration of your talents and performances - you are an exceptional talent and beauty - but I’m damned if I can find the character you play in the Superman legacy.) However, I must respond to Neil’s previous comments. Whereas it is true that it is not NECESSARY to die for one’s convictions, more than three thousand Americans have done so in the last six years. (I suggest that you contact the families of every American killed in action and describe to them, in detail, why the dedication of their sons/daughters/husbands/wives to duty, honor and country were improper, illegal, or immoral in executing a military action against a nation-state whose leaders professed a divine imperitive to destroy our culture. Does anyone other than me remember the phrase “Truth, Justice, and the American way of life”? If so, do you have any idea from whence it came?) Even if you do not agree with the need for the current military action (to use John Kennedy’s and Lyndon Johnson’s description of that little dust-up in Viet Nam a few years ago), I believe that one’s character is defined not by what we anonymously write but rather by our public actions. It’s easy to sit at a keyboard and bitch - it takes character to act on one’s ramblings.
Frankly, if you are not satisfied with the current policies of the United States, well, you have the opportunity to voice same by voting in November. Oh, and don’t make the mistake of thinking that you’ll change the world by sitting on your ass and banging on your keyboard. It’s a bit more complicated than that. Either do something or shut up.

May 25th, 2008 at 9:31 amI think it is important to stand up for what we believe in, but I also believe this is not a strength we all have. And thankfully so…or else no wars would EVER be resolved. Some of us…our strength lies in peace making…and in seeing the other side of things.
A co-worker and I were discussing this yesterday. Her strength lies in standing up for things strongly..(sometimes brings other to anger quickly as she states things a little too strongly at times…God love her), and she sees it as a weakness that she cannot fathom the “other” side of things as quickly as she’d like.
I am kind of her polar opposite. So we enjoy discussing things, as…if you could meld us together…we have a balance.
Both sides are needed. We do not need us all to be road warriors.

May 26th, 2008 at 5:52 amHi Allison
It’s great to see an actress (or actor) take the time to write a such wonderfully reflective and insightful blog. Something I’d like to be able to do, but can’t seem to find the time or the will.
Good to see you’re approaching the (possible) end of Smallville positively; you’ve done really well on the show, kept going for a very long time. Your character is great, everything I’d imagine in a sidekick, superhero-helper, and especially friend.
Life isn’t mapped out, and if it was easy, it’d be boring. Thanks for showing us how it’s done.
Cheers (from Australia, where it’s autumn moving into winter!)

May 26th, 2008 at 8:21 pmAllison,
I’ve recently found myself asking the same questions of myself. What does it mean to stand for something? And further, is what I’m standing for the right thing? I read your blog and took note of how you are concerned about how strong YOUR character is. Well, It takes a lot of strength of character to do the things you do.I remember my father, an amazing and very wise man, told me once that we all do our part. When I feel down and out because I feel I am not doing enough I think about that. No one person can hold the world on their shoulders. I do as much as I can with everything I have, and though it may not change the whole world, it changes something somewhere. I feel that as long as you do have that desire to stand up for your beliefs, and you face those fears, then you are just as strong as any of those men and women that you look up to.
As far as knowing if what you are doing is right, well the only way to tell is if it feels right. I ran off and joined the military because I wanted to help people, to shield people from the darker things. I was totally bummed out when it didn’t turn out like I had thought. I went out and did my best, but sometimes you feel like you have failed. But then that same smart father of mine told me to just stick it out, because I am doing exactly what I wanted to do. And even though I won’t do it forever by any means, no one can take that away from you.
So I guess in short, no one can ever take from you the good things you do in life. And I think that knowing that makes standing up for what you believe in worth it. You inspire us, you challenge us, and you entertain us. You truly do more than enough.

Thought provoking stuff … your post made me think of some of people I went to University with: always quick to state beliefs in socialism or this or that, but very slow to act upon those supposed beliefs. I think its easy to admire people when we don’t have to suffer as they do and can enjoy their stories vicariously.

you are my favorite character on smallvile, through everything chloe always seems cheerfull smart and full of life. when you “died” in the new season I was shouting at the TV (Glad to see your still alive).that out of the way. I believe that the way to make as you say “help people to see the beauty in life” I simpley think is to talk to as many people as you can and put out the message.
My mum used to deal with people who where considering suicide, (pretty heavy stuff). Well she spoke to one man and as they talked he said that he was deppressed because he had no-one to speak and just chat to. he fealt empty. I mention this because I myself used to suffer from depression for almost the same reason. I pulled myself back up thanks to just chatting to friends and spending time with the people who mean most to me. i can know focus on the things that i need to like my career and family. i wont forget the friends that helped me. i think thats a way to be remembered, just help the people looking for attention. if we all helped each other out when we need it then maybe we all do the things in life we have always wanted to but never thought we could.

May 28th, 2008 at 5:13 pmI agree totally that having the desire to effect the world can be so overwhelming. Though I truly believe that every single individual does effect/change the world in one way or another through every single human interaction. I think that the choices we make resound throughout creation for an eternity. It’s like the ripples in a pond from a stone. Maybe the stone was forced into the water or maybe it was inadvertantly kicked there, but the fact that it is there causes the water to move, thus changing the state that it had been in before.
OK, I didn’t know I was going to go there……anyway….
I teach middle school band and I try to explain to my students all the time that they can totally change the world through their willingness to do something as simple as go with an ensemble to play for a nursing home. I want them to know that they don’t have to wait until they are my age to make a difference.I will be 26 in July (like you!) and I have been asking myself so many of the same questions. It’s kind of funny, but I found this book called the “Quarter-Life Crisis”. It explains why twentysomethings tend to go through such an intense time if self-searching and questioning. It has been nice to see why all of the sudden when I turned 25 last year, I became so unsettled with everything that I had ever thought that I knew about myself and the world around me.
K…I will stop rambling now. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Peace Out

You wrote: “I find that it is only during the greatest adversity that you find your greatest truth. It’s easy to claim that you believe in something, but it isn’t until that belief is challenged that one is really forced to decide to what extent”
After the 9/11 attack, the whole world turned against Islam. We’re considered “terrorist”. We’re looked down upon. We’re known as evil monsters. Annnd we’re considered oppressed.
—–> The media plays a big role in this society, and because of this, people are brainwashed and they don’t really know the truth. It’s really sad.– Also, in every race/religion/ community there is always going to be a rotten apple, but people shouldn’t judge a whole group because of the minority!
OK. Back to the point. So after the 9/11 attack, as I said, people considered us evil, but there were other people who actually decided to research about Islam and ended up defending it too! Also, many Muslims, in this rough hill, are trying their best to prove that Islam is actually peaceful. It’s hard, but we’re trying. I guess that history DOES repeat itself, but in a different form. First it was the Jews, Europeans believed that they were the reason for the Black Death. Many were persecuted. There was also the Holocaust. They suffered so much, and at the end, people actually felt sorry for them and tried helping them. –2) Slaves- they were treated as animals, they were considered inferior. They had no rights what-so-ever. And then, in the 1800’s, people actually felt sorry for them, and then slavery was abolished. –2) Right now, it’s the Muslims turn. We’re going to suffer, but at the end, I have a feeling that we’re going to prove to the world that we’re good people, and all we want is peace & harmony….
I guess, humans don’t learn from their mistakes, they tend to make them over, and over again. >.>…

I’m sorry for ranting. I’m 15, and I don’t feel like proof reading so there might be a lot of grammar mistakes :p sorry.Peace.

May 29th, 2008 at 11:02 amAllison,
I thoroughly enjoy your role as Chole on Smallville. Ever since I first became a fan of the show I recognized that one person above all held everything together and made the show worth watching each week, and that was your portrayal of Chole Sullivan. A few episodes back Chloe asked a question of Clark about her amazing meteor freak ability to heal others, wondering why she had been chosen for that ability above all others. Clark was silent; he should not have been because there was a really good lesson ready made for the answer. It’s because the character of Chloe is always more concerned about others than about herself and always trying to make things right, to correct the mistakes she makes as well as those of others. In short, she truly cares about other people. Hence she was “chosen” to receive the amazing gift of being able to heal physical injury. I hope you will practice the gift of being able to lead others to spiritual healing offered in your personal life. That is a gift worthy of a lifetime of searching–and doesn’t require meteor rocks to activate. Wishing you true and lasting success in all you do. Britt

I am impressed when I see normal people like Salomon to fight and stand for something. Everyone is trying to do something good and I don’t even thing it is that important to be extraordinary. The small things in life to support and help others is a big step forward as well.
It’s funny that you have thoughts like this because it shows that you are trying to use your status as a public person to do something good.

I saw “Kristen Kreuk” mentioned as an actor in it and thought “Hey! isn’t that the blonde chick from smallville?” Couldn’t imagine you as a villain in a game inspired movie, so wiki’ed it came up with a pic of Kristen and it was so not you. Mind you kirsten I can SEE as a villain! I then went thru the smallville wiki till I found you and this site.

For you with all my heart
Watch Over You
Leaves are on the ground
Fall has come
Blue skies turning grey
Like my loveI tried to carry you
And make you whole
But it was never enough
I must go[Chorus:]
Who is gonna save you
When I’m gone?
And who’ll watch over you
When I’m gone? You say you care for me
But hide it well
How can you love someone
And not yourself?[Chorus]
And when I’m gone
Who will break your fall?
Who will you blame?I can’t go on
And let you lose it all
It’s more than I can take
Who’ll ease your pain?
Ease your pain[Chorus:]
Who is gonna save you
When I’m gone?
Who’ll watch over you?
Who will give you strength
When you’re not strong?
Who’ll watch over you
When I’ve gone away?Snow is on the ground
Winters come
You long to hear my voice
But I’m long gone -

I live a all things considered pretty good life. I am in need of nothing. I have community support and people to turn to when i need help or advice.
I am active in a support group focusing on FASD support of both parents of those affected with FASD and those like myself that battle with it everyday. I believe we are making a difference in our community. It is not always easy and your words resonate in my spirit as true and as something i can identify with. I often wonder is it possible to leave a mark and am i making any kind of a mark even at all? I guess history will tell. I have begun to write a book of my life story and it takes alot of mental energy and discipline to get it on paper. I hope if by my life one child is born normal without any neural damage of any kind then i would have been successful. For now i keep pressing on.

June 8th, 2008 at 10:02 pmDear Allison,
I originally wrote this for the “General Discussion” forum on your website in hopes that you may, by some luck, find time to read my thoughts. David, the mod, advised I might be better off posting here. I truly hope you get a chance!
I’m sorry if this is a poor choice for posting in this particular forum— I’ve looked around, but didn’t really see a spot opportune for my thoughts. I thought I’d try here!
Allow me to start by introducing myself. My name is Chris… yes, my screen name is not creative. I live smack-dab in the middle of nowhere, Minnesota. I have dreams…. goals… ambitions. Hopes that drive me. One such hope is to create something. I don’t know what just yet, but I’m learning as I go. I believe we as people were created to create, among other things. I’ve developed a passion for art in many forms, whether in painting, photography, music, or especially film. I’m inspired…. I was going to say “easily” but I’m not sure that’s true. “Simply” would be better put. Movies, books, even just watching life in the world around me inspires. I’ve recently decided to pursue a Bachelor of the Arts, hoping to break into the film industry via writing and, perhaps, directing.
I’ve been a Smallville fan for some time now. I hope not to offend, but I enjoy Smallville not because of the writing, the plots, the effects, or even in many cases the performances. I enjoy it because I’m in love with the idea of a single person impacting the world in such a profound way, people call him “Super”. I’m in love with the story of Superman, which is a creative masterpiece, but more so I’m in love with the idea behind him.
Moving on.
Small details aside, I believe we are a lot alike. Having learned some about you via this website and, in no small part, your video blogs on YouTube, it seems like we think quite a bit alike. I daresay we would probably be friends if we knew each other. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how circumstance seems to dictate who a person has the opportunity to befriend, and wondering if there could be a way to change circumstances and create opportunities for otherwise unreachable relationships.
You see, it’s not often I hear about someone and genuinely want to hold a conversation with them. I don’t know how to say that without sounding conceited, but it’s true. I find beauty and inspiration in the world, in people, and in creating things to inspire other people to create more things… but I haven’t had the opportunity to meet many other people who put much stock in these. The sad truth is, where I’m from the most popular trains of thought stem from fishing, hunting, and drinking.
You have inspired me, Allison. And I wished to share that with you. I very much wanted to sit down and hold a conversation with you, but as hard as I’ve tried, I can’t seem to change circumstance. When I learned of the Juicy Peach project of yours and Kristin’s, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to sit down and talk. I’ve spent the last year and a half working for a radio corporation in MN, have done some free lance writing, and am taking a working holiday to New Zealand soon. I’ll be visiting the Rhema Broadcasting Group. It’s a Christian radio/tv corporation covering 97ish% of the country. With all those things in mind, and the fact that film is one of the fastest growing industries over in NZ, I hoped to use my skills in writing/broadcasting to spread the word on the Peach and snag an interview with you.
I knew it was a long shot, as I am no more and no less av
