The Cookie Lady

Meet “The Cookie Lady.” Hair as red as my best friend Jenny’s face when we used to talk about the boys she loved in 6th grade. A rip in her matching red dress that ever-so-delicately held itself together on her right bosom.

“The Cookie Lady.”

Speaking in a tone that sounded like she was going to rip someone’s face off if they continued to breathe at that irrational and inappropriate level, but saying words that couldn’t contradict the sentiment more.

“The Cookie Lady.”

A woman who tracks the people who do nice things for her and spends countless hours baking love into bars and cookies.

An inspirational character.

I would like to take a lesson from “The Cookie Lady.”

For my next MackEvent, I think we should all bake a box of cookies for someone who has done something nice for us and leave it, unsuspecting, on their doorstep.

    That is too much fun! She seems like such a jovial person! And it’s so awesome how she’s making the world a nicer place one cookie at a time! (It reminds me of the character Ana Pascal in Stranger than Fiction…love line she says: “I just figured if I was going to make the world a better place I would do it with cookies”)

    Also, I can’t wait to bake my box of cookies! I love baking. :D In New York I used to bake about a double batch of cookies a day and me and my friends would hand them out on the subway! It was soooo much fun, and this will bring back those great memories!

    Lime Drops, huh… Those sound delicious. A nice detour from the more traditional lemon drops. I wonder if she has chocolate chip pumpkin cookies.

    Thanks for sharing this character of a lady. It’s great to see everyday people with so much personality out there doing something they feel good about and making a difference. Also thanks for letting her inspire your challenge to us to do some baking and thanking. It’s amazing how just a little act of kindness like that when someone is least expecting it, can really make someone’s day, especially if it isn’t going so well.

    As I was watching the video, I thought to myself, “Holy Crap! That’s going to be me in 20 years!” Minus the red hair! And I only make 10-12 kinds of cookies at Christmas.

    I love bakiing, and grew up in my grandmother’s house, where I learned the joy of baking from scratch. I bake roughly 2000 cookies for Christmas. I think I get about 3 hours of sleep from Dec 15-Dec 25! I bring them to work for friends to take home to their families. I drop them off at friends’ houses because it makes me stop and visit with a few people I might not see as often as I should. I bring trays to any holiday party I’m invited to, and I love to do it all because people really appreciate the time and attention it requires to make them. People’s faces light up when they see a big pile of homemade cookies because it’s kind of a lost art. I don’t know many younger people who bake.

    Those of you who say they can’t bake…TRY IT!!!! It just takes a little practice, and even if the cookies don’t come out the way you want them to, people will appreciate that you tried.

    Oh for the day!

    Notice that the Cookie Lady said that she stood there to deliver the cookies. As much as giving a kindness without taking credit is a wonderful thing, anyone taking in cookies found at their front door without knowing the source and eating them or giving them to their family is not very wise in this day and age. You need to know and trust the source or check to see that they are factory sealed and have n ingredient list.

    Also, some ids have allergic reaction to nuts … and if they find the cookies before the parents do ….

    I live in a community where I am still comfortable enough to never lock my doors. I don’t even know where my keys are. But I don’t know if I would eat cookies left on my door step if I didn’t know the source.

    hmm. Firstly, @Tabby up there, is there any way you can use a varied name so that people don’t think you’re me?

    Secondly, @David, that’s kind of a good point except that the joy isn’t in the eating, its in the giving. :) If you leave it unsuspecting, you’d never know if they ate it or not. It would just keep that smile on your face for the act that you did. If I opened up my door and found cookies, I might not eat them but I might also go “oh my god how sweet!”

    I call my mom the cookie lady. Every year at Christmas time she bakes so many yummy cookies and I ask her why do you only bake them at Christmas? I stole all her cookie recipes and bake through out the year since I love cookies so much. I like your MackEvent Allison but I don’t know if I’ll do it. Everyone that’s ever done anything nice for me knows my cookies and I have the worst neighbors and don’t know if I would be nicest enough to share my yummy cookies with them. Great all this talk about cookies is making me crave some. =)

    Yeah Man – The Cookie Lady !!!!

    During my elementary school years in Warren, MI at Lincoln Elementary, we had a bunch of Cookie Ladies, who were the moms of the kids in the school. Back when no one had to lock their doors at night and could trust the next door neighbor to watch the kids for awhile.

    What we can conclude from the Cookie Lady is that the world is still full of special people who have good works in their hearts, just like the actor who happens to play Chloe on the television series Smallville.

    Wow! This is cool! I think the hardest thing will be to think of who to give them to, there have been so many wonderful people in my life, when my dad passed away last August everyone was soo eager to give me love and comfort, so this is a cool sweet little way to pay one of them back!

    That woman is so sweet. You know I love human stories like this, to demonstrate that we aren’t selfish people and are actually really good despite the claim we are natively bad.

    Reminds me of this one time, I was walking inside a store and there was this old lady who bought a case of bottled water and some other groceries, well there was a family that walked by me and the mother saw the old lady and told the husband to watch the kids take them inside she’ll meet up with them. She walked over to the lady and offered her help and helped the old lady load her trunk up. And it’s really sweet.

    Now what does that have to do with the cookie lady I have no clue what-so-ever, it’s just another tangent I go on sometimes.

    Anywho! I’ll bake some cookies and bars and such, but knowing me I’ll just go overboard and probably throw a feast for the neighbors LOL.

    It’s a very good and delicious documentary.
    I must admit that I have never do cookies. That’s my wife who always attends cookies. I must face this new challenge.I would be tempted to make black mint chocolate chips. In grocery stores I’ve never seen this kind of cookie.

    Good Idea; I’ll be the; “COOKIE DUDE”.
    now that we are going with such a fast pace, it is hard to catch up with all the events.
    A two minutes video and I can write a book about it.
    She is such a nice lady and yet she made me think;
    “I don’t want to be a cookie lady all year round, then I’ll have no life”
    And the pile of greens in her hand made me smile.
    Don’t get me wrong SHE IS A NICE LADY.
    I guess what I am trying to say is that there are different ways of looking at one person and I am glad every body on this page has an eye for niceness.

    I think that if the act of giving is all about how the giver feels about themselves, it turns that act back into something selfish. I also consider it a waste to give someone something they can not use. In a world of dwindling resources especially, it is better if we have a choice to do something that makes a difference. If you are blessed with enough to share what you have and choose to share it, do your best to make it a blessing to the person who recieves the gift as well.

    I’m just excited as my best friend in 6th grade was also a Jenny. Since there were 2 of us…always together…her dad referred to us as “Return of the Jeni” (it was the 80′s). Maybe I’ll send her some cookies.

    Really nice don’t know many people (if in fact any) who would bake people cookies just cause their nice to them ;P

    as a ice-cream/ cookies/ chocolate addict its a great way to make the world a better place .. hmm i wonder if you could make a chocolate cookie made from ice-cream … like ice-cream cake anyway my parents are old and by brother’s being 25 and 27 and married i bake a lot for my self even though i’m 15, cause i don’t want to trouble my mum , and its takes quite a long time to make them, so to give them away for free is very kind and considerate, may god bless her, also thier should be more people like her … then i’ll get free cookies :D yaaaaaaaah :D ,

    aw, Don’t you always find that when the shopkeeper/seller person is kind and chatty and happy like the cookie lady, it makes you feel happy? smiles and laughter really are contagious!

    I love the concept behind this Mack Event. The cookie Lady sounds lovely, I wish I had one in my area!

    There is one lady at my workplace who always provides us with snacks and drinks, and even brings in cakes and meals (sandwich spreads, etc) for birthdays. She does this every day, out of her own pocket. I figured she’d be the perfect person to be the recipient.

    I spend a good deal of my day commuting to and from work on the local metro system, so I didn’t manage to find time to bake a batch of cookies. However, I did have lots of spare fabric lying around, and lots of spare time sitting on subway cars. So instead of baking her edible cookies, I made her a stuffed sandwich cookie.

    I was a few days late in posting this since I had to wait for a day where I could leave this on her desk without anyone else seeing.

    Hmmmm, I don’t really know my neighbors, as I’ve only lived in this neighborhood (down the road from Microsoft’s main campus) just a few months or so.
    However, I did bake cookies for my roommates this week, twice!
    They seemed to like them, and the second batch turned out better than the first. You know what they say about practice.
    There’s no way to be sneaky about baking my roommates cookies, though.
    There’s like six of us living here, all sharing the same kitchen. So no sneaky surprises.
    Guess I need to find a way to get to know the neighbors. Hard to do when they’re all a heck of a lot richer than you are, though. :|
