Bravery in Art

Last night I saw such a beautiful exemplification of bravery that I had not ever recognized before.
I was in the audience of a play comprised of 3 one-person shows. The courage one must have to believe they can tell a story, honestly, for 20 minutes to a group of strangers is so honorable and beautiful.
I am so moved by people expressing. To me there is something so extraordinary about our capacity as human beings to translate experience and emotion.

I feel like it is one of the major things that sets us apart from animals: Our capacity, and reason for creating simply to create. To communicate with something other than a conversation, or to communicate something so potent it inspires depth and introspection which than effects all conversation.

Amazing.

So here is a nice little philosophical question for you:
What is art?

Being an aspiring artist, I strongly believe that art is the physical interpretation of the creativity within our minds. Something which can never be fully expressed, no matter how advanced our cultures may become. Yet another unattainable perfection which we, as humans, strive to achieve. Art is whatever is in our minds, hearts, and souls which we long to share with others.
In many ways, love itself is an art form. something we all feel. Something that cannot be described or perfectly portrayed, yet connects and binds us all together. All art is a portrayal of some form of love. love of the concept of love, one or several people, concepts or ideas, the place you live in, somewhere you long to be (physically or emotionally). the list goes on forever.

But then, I did not fully answer it to my own expectations, did I? Is art the expression of creativity or is it the expression of some form of love through a medium or … something else entirely?

  • Andrea

I love your comment Lou, so very true.
I personally dabble in art…I wouldnt say I’m an artist by any means..but I try! haha.

I think art can’t be defined, thats why it’s art. To me…it’s taking what you think is beautiful and sharing it with the world. Which Is why I appreciate your comment so much Allison. It takes a lot of bravery to show that part of yourself to world.

Art is a very raw thing. Really….with the exception of nature (which you could look at as God’s canvise if you want to) the world would lack eye catching beauty if there was no art.

If you think about it…clothes, are art. Someone takes the time to stitch pieces, and create designs. Buildings are artwork. An architect invisions in, and people build it with their hands.

So, I guess thats my answer….art is everything. It’s beauty and people in their truest form. It’s expressing yourself….it cant be defined. It’s raw…and illogical. Art is life.

  • http://www.jephthahs-domain.com Sarah

That’s a very interesting question! Seemingly simple, and yet it turns out to be harder to answer than you thought.

I think art could be anything that you express something deeper. I think it could be through any medium you could think of. Anything that someone else made that someone else can see or read and get something from. Yes, I think that vague definition seems to encompass what I think art is. :)

  • Robin Hebert

Man, that is a good question! Art is the tangible expression of what we perceive in one half of our brains I guess because one half is technically scientific and one is more spatial, ethereal oriented….but then again, look at a snowflake, its so perfect, it can be art and science! Art can be on so many levels. I’m a graphic artist but I have an appreciation of all things colorful, and spatial. My daughter on the other hand is more of a fine artist and can be very detailed oriented. She doesnt miss a beat when it comes to being aware of the beauty around her. I have to admit I’m tempted to be jealous of that gift at times….I want to be more aware. So who really sees life as it is, the scientist or the artist…..or are they two sides of the same coin? What is so trippy is various people have various ideas of what art is….beauty in the eyes of the beholder…but be honest, dont you really really KNOW when you see good art, there has to be a delineation between good expression and not so good expression…..IMHO.

  • Darwin

A sculptor by the name of Eric Gill said:
“What is a work of art? A word made flesh…a thing seen, a thing known, the immeasurable translated into terms of the measurable.”

Francis Bacon said that art is man added to nature.

Issac Stern…who was an outstanding violinist said that the difference between the great and the TRULY great was the ability to communicate…

I have often thought about it as the abililty to recreate beauty in it’s immensity and detail.

So I think of it first and foremost as uplifting.

Wlat Disney said: “I am interested in entertaining people, in bringing pleasure, particularly laughter to others, rather than being concerned with ‘expressing myself’ with obscure creative impressions.”

    visual inspiration and emotion…
truly to me… it is the picture….
of the mind of the artist :)
thats why i say that you can tell alot about a person or artist from their art
    its truly amazing…
thats why i love it so much…
like my photography is how i see the world…
or what sticks out and what i think is beautiful…
or my acting is portraying how im feeling… or how i can feel.. its complicated… very method :)
My writing is also very important to me….
I get to spill my guts onto blank pages…
I feel truly amazing when I create art

also i deff. believe in art… its my life…
and in a way its everyones, because in one way or another everyone makes art

another reason why i think there should be some kinda section where posters can put their art (any artform) and express themselves

  • taylor nikole

    yet again on my wall:

“An Artist is someone who produces things that people don’t needto have but that he- for some reason- thinks would be a good idea to give them”

not truly what art is.. but in a way its true :)

  • http://bubbalou.deviantart.com Lou

I see a lot of quotes on this site. As much as they may apply, I more often feel the need to make my own wording. It feels more… me. :)
and just like that, in art, you’ve gotta be true to yourself.

  • Melissa

Oh yes! I really really love this topic. I draw so I can relate so much to this topic…..Art for my it’s my life…..sometimes when I can’t find the words to describe something or someone I start drawing, to express through it how I feel about them. Art it’s the beauty that someone or something creates by their own, it could be a person, an animal, a landscape, a smile, a baby, etc……Art is everywhere! wherever you go you’ll always find something that moves your heart out of place.
Art is something that conects you to a place you’ve never been before…..it takes you to realize, to open your eyes and see that no creation by natural in the world is bad…..we, humans turn this something into bad or good thing…they born to make us see that this art is here to full our heart and life with light of their beauty. I love art! All around us is art….it’s just that sometimes we can’t see it because our heart and life is full of material things…..Thanks Allison so much for bring this topic! Love ya!
    Bye,Melissa.

“Creativity is the freedom to make mistakes, Art is knowing which mistakes to keep.”

I forget who said it but its a great quote.

  • http://allisonmack.com Lori Bennett

i see art as something a person tries to express the way they see the world or a certain aspect of life through speech, visually, to stir some feeling in someone even if it is one person. i love art. not just one form of art but all forms of art.

  • Kyle

Something original that expresses a person’s creativity. That’s just off the top of my head; pretty bland.

  • Emily

From one whose sole artistic endeavour is to draw the Superman symbol on every blank canvas before her… hehe. Just kidding. That’s the only thing I can draw, but I suppose art is much more than canvas and paints. It can be anything creatively expressed… such as poetry, writings, film, photography, paintings, sculptures, music, 007 escapes (well, he is very creative with his license to kill… i suppose this might be credited to the artistic screenwriters)… anything that makes me stop a moment and say, “wow, that’s really awesome,” is art. Uninspiring poetry, paintings that look like a kindergartener could have painted it, music that gives me a headache… those aren’t art to me. Maybe they are to someone else, but not me. Art is a personal thing, meant for the artist to get. Maybe other people will get the point, maybe they won’t. Everyone might, or no one will. That’s what makes it creative… if everyone could do it, there would be no point. To quote Syndrome from The Incredibles (yes, I’m a kid at heart), “When everyone’s special, no one will be.” Everyone has a different artistic endeavour. There are the songwriters, the poets, the authors, the actors, the scientists, the architects (this being written by an aspiring architect)… everyone’s differently creative. =) To quote my favorite show in the world – Smallville, what else? “Everyone is put here for a reason. Our task in life is to find out what that reason is.” Same with art – we have to find ourselves first to express ourselves.

On a slightly different note, but still pertaining to art – I saw via facebook that Alice & Huck is finished! I was just wondering if there would be any chance to purchase a DVD or likewise… the group says the unveiling’s in Vancouver, but I live in Arkansas and am still in high school… I hope there’s some way I can watch it eventually, I’m sure it’s the truest form of art, Ms. Mack. =)

I believe that art is the creative representation of ourselves and our life. I love and cherish having my work shown or talked about, amazing. Us as human beings almost ignore the art within all of us. We need to take advantage of it and express ourselves in the most creative ways. That would be amazing if we could get together and do that. Like a giant art show of feelings and expressions. Freakin sweet. I think that art for everyone is different, yet alike. We all have different art styles and ways of expression. Thats what makes us human beings, unique individuals to say. Art can be blogs, drawings, plays, or even expressions of ourselves. Enough of me. Bye Bye.

  • Ana_Sullivan

what’s art?… For dadaism, the world was an artwork, an installation. Maybe it’s a thought shared by many people, in which I include myself.
Personally, I believe all things have “design”. Design to be practical and design to be beautiful.
Would be the art something aesthetic, mystical, symbolic, or simply creative imagination? I don’t know, maybe all in one.
In my point of view art is one of the reasons for humanity. How can we express ourselves without art? Art is unleash your feelings, show to the world how we are, assess what is around you…
Art helps us to be more sensitive people, more human, receive life in a different way, art makes us mourn, makes us vibrate, laughing, crying…
Art is the best synonym to life!

  • Michael

Art is what you make it…

  • Sam

Art is the way you express every thing that you can’t (or don’t want) express by speaking.
I do the same with music (I play guitar). Every “improvisation”, I mean something I’ve not learning to play before and that come out of my mind by itself is something I can’t (or don’t want) express. This feeling is very difficult to explain to someone that has never felt the same thing…
I think Art both active (you produce something) and passive (you appreciate a work with your senses) is an outlet for people, an outlet from the daily life, from their little worries, from themself sometimes.

  • Puffy

“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.” Georgia O’Keeffe

Art was one of the best subjects at school until the time came when you had to start defining what art was.

  • Adi

    My thoughts on art as I see it is simple;

Art is when human-created media can inspire the imagination in their creativity and/or excecution.

When nature does the same thing, its generally considered beauty.

So human art is natural beauty if you look at it a certain way.

  • http://www.myspace.com/fridayphilosopher The Friday Philosopher

    I agree with Puffy.

Art was much better when we of that age where were allowed to express ourselves rather than having to talk about expressing ourselves.

There are some very good interpretations of art listed in the above comments, however, rather than ask myself what is art, I ask; what isn’t art?

Where do we draw the line or do we even have to draw a line? Is it truly art when a person takes a photograph of the mess in their bedroom?

I guess it all boils down to expression. There are people who will criticize every little detail of whatever it is that they feel like criticizing, but who cares what other people may think.

In my opinion true art is the expression of ones self for the sole benefit of ones self!

Of course, this is nothing more than an opinion!

    P.S. Hello everybody! :)

    IMO

Art is like a picture of the artist’s soul. Is the skill this artist found to share with us what’s going on to his/her depths.

It’s a beautiful form of language that transcribes itself on a subjective or an abstract form and that whose interpretation could happen in many differents ways, in accordance with the receiver, without, thus, to lose its objective: to inspire people to admire it.

  • Grace

I believe that art is anything from the imagination, that a person (or people) creates to share for others to enjoy.

Sometimes the timing of the subjects of Allison’s posts astounds me because they relate so closely to things happening in my own life. I recently decided to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming an actor. I feel that I am finally BRAVE enough to put myself out there and take the risk of putting myself out there and baring my soul. I understand the kind of bravery that Allison is talking about.

Just yesterday I was reading the assigned reading for the acting class I am taking, and the chapter is about being brave enough to risk showing emotions that we would normally hold inside. So last night when I read the post for the day, I was happy that once again the subject is one that I was already thinking about!

Acting is the art form that I feel passionate about. I look forward to being able to express myself in ways that I never have been able to before. I think that is what art is really about – sharing our souls with others.

ALLISON – This is why I keep coming back! The subjects that you come up with are very meaning full to me!

Art is all of these things listed in everybody’s responses, but what’s missing is the criterion that art must be perceived with the senses. I could write a hundred songs, paint a thousand scenes, pen a million stories…but they’re not art until they’re heard, seen or read. So art isn’t art until it is shared.

  • Ralph

It is a physical representation of what we believe in and dream of. It is a glimpse into the soul of the artist.

  • Nikk

Art is the child of human creativity.

  • http://deleted Robin

I have to agree with everyones comments, I’ll simply add…

Art is the creation and projection of emotion and ideas…

…which in turn (hopefully) entertains, educates, challanges and hopefully enlightens the audience.

A one man show must take incredible bravery, just the thought of standing , let alone acting and creating emotion on stage is simply terrifying to me, hope the performers got a standing ovation!!!

  • Lydia

Art…I used to think it was only photography, paintings, drawings and sculptures.
You have learned me that it is more than that and I have found what I consider to be ‘art’.
To me art is every form of expression. You can find art in many things.
Using make up, designing clothes, interieur design, writing (books, poetry), hairstyles, pieces of jewelry, conversations, music (writing lyrics, singing and playing the instruments), film and theater, flower arrangement, all kind of handi- and fancy work…I think it is all art and I believe it is unique, beautiful and I hope it will always exist.

  • Maria

Awesome question. Now we’re talking!! This is most definitely my language!! lol I love art and everything about it!! So…

Art to me is a way a person can communicate what they are feeling through something that doesn’t exactly need words. It’s a way to express who you are and express any kind of message. And also I think it’s a way to express something or put into the light something that people wouldn’t want to talk about. I used to take a drama class and my teacher taught us once that being an actress you have the opportunity ( in some of the works you do) to be able to get out a message to which to some people it’s kind of a taboo topic. You have the liberty to in what you do make people think. In theater you can make them laugh, cry but in the end of the day the goal would be to teach them something new. That is what I love about art in general. It is a great way to make people evaluate things and make them think. Who knows what a simple quote spray painted on the street, or a painting, music, poem,a book, could do to to kind of stop and make us evaluate ourselves. That is why I love art, all kinds. Because it is a beautiful way to communicate so many things!!

    XoXo

  • chloe

I completely agree with loads of the comments here – that art is the ultimate form of expression, and that it isn’t always true art until it is shared with the world. For instance, I really love writing stories, but I write for me personally, and no one else (I do post it online under a pen-name as what would it be but meaningless words if it was never read?), just as an expression of my feelings and emotions because some things I could never be brave enough to say aloud. Because of this though I think art is extremely personal and powerful, and used to send messages out into the world or to certain people individually whether they may or may not ever see it or even know the true meaning intended. Dating back to the Renaissance and beyond, playwrites such as Shakespeare and John Webster, often wrote things underlyingly meant as an expression about the way they felt about how society was run at that time. The same goes for countless other expressionists in other fields such as painting, music, etc. throughout history. Anything can be seen as Art so long as it is a true expression of a person’s emotions, their identity, what lies in their soul.

  • Phil Damico

What isnt? Evrything has a sense of art about it if you stop and think about it. What ever touches you or moves you. Its that one thing that when you see it you stop and go “WOW”! Go to the Louvre, its fucking awesome!

    What is Art??

Art is the creative part of the Life.
But…”The Best Artist”… is The Nature.
The Art is Free… like our thoughts.

in spanish….”El Arte es el espejo del Alma.” ( I try to translate to english: “The Art is the mirror of the Soul” ).

  • Kirk D. aka “Spartacus”

    Hey Alli-Mack,
    Nice!!! Very Nice question!

    I really enjoyed posts 1, 2, & 30, Lou(1) & Andrea(2) & Phil Damico (3)!

I believe art is an interpretive expression of life and of the life-giver God (a sensus divinitatus – sense of the divine – the inward persuasion all people have that directs them to a belief in God and a propensity to worship), which communicates & inspires another or others, to see & feel what the artist feels or say, “that rings true with what I see & how I feel.”

I believe art is that which expresses who we are. The offspring of God. I believe it is our attempt to be that which we were created to reflect, the “Imago Dei”, the Image of God & encourage others to return & do with unveiled faces.

  • http://girlmeetsnyc.blogspot.com Susanna-Cole

Art can be seen in anything, and an artist will often find art where others thing there is none. Art doesn’t have any rules, and it can be anything you want it to be, complex or simple.

Hi Allison, To me art is the beauty in life. It is the creative expression that us humans use in different ways to bring joy to the rest of us. Art is painting, music ,film etc. all these expressions always bring a smile to my face. Great topic Allison.

  • I’m Rachel

Expression of emotions in any way you like.

  • Tony

What is art? –I’m going to go with Phil Damico and others above and take the broadest expression of art, a definition that means it can be almost anything.

Art is skill while it is being perfected and as it reaches a certain stage of perfection. There is the art of practice and of performance. The amount of skill evidenced in any pursuit demonstrates the amount of art involved.

Art is multi-leveled. There is art in the preparation, in the evaluation, and in the performance.

The preparation may involve many people or one. In the preparation, there is focus on what we want to accomplish. There is patience that, if we don’t get it to our satisfaction the first time, we will keep trying. There is trust: We can do this. All we have to do is keep trying.

The evaluation: That’s how we decide we are ready to perform. We form the image in our minds, on paper, in the expression of our movements. We receive feedback in our own bodies and minds, and according to our level of skill, obtain a more or less accurate assessment of how far our preparation needs to go.

In the performance, the feedback is multiplied a thousand-fold as it is interpreted by more and more people. At this point, the artist sometimes finds that he or she has created something more than was even planned or thought out. That is according to the level of skill of the individual or group.

I think we can include just about any human endeavor that involves levels of skill in this kind of definition.. Stephen King made a reference to carpentry in his small book, On Writing, about having your tool box always at hand. In truth, carpentry is an art under this definition, when it displays the skill of one who has practiced and perfected his or her performance. After all, some of the people on “This Old House,” the home renovation show on public TV, entertain and inspire me just the way a good writer or actor does.

The power of art lies in the nature of its inspiration. I’m not inspired to remodel my house because that would be a disaster! but I am inspired, perhaps, to do a better, more soulful job at something else, or maybe I am simply inspired to appreciate another person’s excellence. That may have changed me subtly without my even knowing it.

  • http://www.myspace.com/analfabeta Gnome

    See………
    That’s what I’m saying.

There is no Art if there is no eye to apreciate it. It’s like a communication.
But, as any language form, we have differents ways to see, understand and assimilate that.
Different eyes lead to a differents interpretations but in the end the message is passed foward.

  • Taty

Art is a way to express yourself or your feelings!!!

  • http://www.threepwood.co.nz Jendi

Art is a belief, again it’s all the same, we continue to dance around this interesting and provoking circle of meaning and beliefs.

Art is like beliefs, it’s a vision, a feeling, a sound, a touch, a thought, even a moment that captures something beautiful or something or nothing at all!

It’s personal, it’s a belief; to me my favour art is both music and photography; music is poetry with a beat in my eyes and it captures and stirs a feeling or emotion inside that without that …say trigger would remain stagnant!

Art like belief creates feelings and feelings mould our beliefs and our values and our lives!

    It’s about balance :)

  • http://www.threepwood.co.nz Jendi

you don’t need eyes to appreciate art!

    jendi:
    aww i love that…
    its so true :)

  • http://www.myspace.com/analfabeta Gnome

    Indeed Jendi…..

But you need, at least, one of your 5 (maybe 6) senses.

    ;)

  • taylor nikole

    okay so ive figured out…
that i believe that art brings ‘us’ to the realization of similarities rather than differences….
    meaning in others….
art is supposed to be our expression as individuals and it is, but theres this huge apsect of art, where we realize how much we express ourselves (and this is the same in many of us…and this is similarity…)
by realizing our interests… it brings us together as a community
and its a beautiful thing :)

    hahah am i speaking gibberish?

  • http://www.threepwood.co.nz Jendi

so then taylor whats a community???? does it have to have a common interest or function???

  • http://www.threepwood.co.nz Jendi

haha I’m just being difficult and screwing with ya :)

  • http://www.chloesullivansite.com/ Bouroux

    Hi Allison.
Art is the reflection of our soul.
Art is an incredible communication tools. A picture is worth miles words is
an example of the communication capacity of a single painting or sculture.
A simple smile is the art because it conveys feelings. The art can convey to others the vision that its author has of the life.
As art is subject to the judgement of others, we must be brave. But share with others the things we like , give lot of satisfaction.
Thanks Allison to sharing your passions.
    Bye

    Claude.

  • taylor nikole

    oh jendi…
you get me when my brain is fried due to math hmwk *sigh*
    :D
ill try to answer this…. in the best way possible…
or what im capable of at the moment
    (okay ill stop now)
    :
the denotation… in one form would be sharing common characteristics or interests…
my deffinition is related to the denotation ofcourse…
I’d like to say art brings us together as this so called ‘community’
by a common interest and enjoyment.
    hmm function?
    lets see….
the function of the art community (i see it as)
is expressing, creating art, sharing ideas, being a critique and at the same time (common interests?)appreciative of a persons willingness to share their art or creations with others…. in hopes that they will enjoy it also…

maybe we don’t ‘function’ or have a proper ‘function’ (sorry thats weird)
but when we realize, in some of us, how much we may appreciate art… and letting it become a part of us… we fall into our own place…
so who needs a specific function

in some ways its wanting to connect to people, to share yourself with people…

haha i hope that makes sense…
    im kinda confusing myself
    feel free to question :)
i think i have a fever too :) no bueno
    haha

  • taylor nikole

“haha I’m just being difficult and screwing with ya”
