How to be creative.

Just start creating.

I must say I don’t think I have ever been more inspired than I am right now. I am sitting in an art studio owned by an amazing artist, Jay Senetcho, lived and worked in by Chad Krowchuk, Gideon Flit, and Darcy Belscher, watching a music video directed, produced and designed by Chad starring Mark Hildreth!
I am blown away by the creativity and joy I am surrouned by.

Getting off a 14-hour day of directing and acting, only to be met with a wonderful glass of scotch and love filled artists celebrating art, life and humanity. Ah joy.

How do you be creative!

You just be!

Express yourself and love the experience. What you don’t know is a gift and to embrace your questions will break the skin that surrounds your skin! Pay attention and laugh.

Mmmmm, you made me think david.
Yes, I did it by hand but now I realize; Had I stored your data in arrays or any data base system, a small program, or query could get me the same results. May be I’ll do that in a warm sunny weekend and play with data a little more.

  • Scott

One I watched about a month ago was Black Cat.

The one this weekend was Solty Rei.

There was more tragedy to Solty Rei, but not TOO much.

Loved this post. So simple, yet such excellent advice. “You just be”. A mantra to live by. Thanks.

  • midwestslp

I liked the comment about writing letters. I remember the wonderful feeling I used to get upon receiving a letter from a friend or relative. Before email, I used to write 4 or 5 letters year to different people I cared about. I know that’s not much, and that now, through email I write much more often, but most emails get deleted or never again read whereas a physical letter is a treasure and can be read over and over again. I used to imagine my friend, cousin, etc. sitting at a table somewhere penning the words that I was reading. Such wonderful memories. Sometimes I write down my thoughts just to remember what it feels like to use a pen and paper.

    Yeah…..
The only letters I receive now is from my credit card…
    How sad is that?

  • midwestslp

I haven’t received a letter (or sent one, for that matter) in ages. But a nephew asked me for my address just a couple of days ago and I’m thinking that I just might be getting a Christmas card soon. How exciting!

  • http://www.threepwood.co.nz Jendi

    Excellent….so I’m don’t alone ….”the lost letter” syndrome isn’t just effecting me….
Christmas cards, to thats a hole other ball game, I used to give and receive one to everyone in my class at primary school, I think on your side of the world is it called elementary school???

But my memories of receiving a letter is good, warm, loved…emails just aint the same are they???? maybe I’m leading myself to pop to the stationary shop, get some nice paper and stamps????do the still sell stamps:) (kidding) and righting a handful of letters to people I know and love and appreciate and whom over the years have helped me out. Writing them in my neatest and best linked handwritting….not types but hand written!!

Thats what I’ll do, will let you know how it goes!!!

LONG LIVE LETTER WRITING :) :)
    and RECEIVING….maybe:)

  • Jendi

I think that will be the title for my book… NOBODY WRITES LETTERS ANYMORE!

  • midwestslp

Yes, I think I too will jump on the bandwagon and write to a few friends and relatives as soon as I’m on vacation. I think they (and I) will get a thrill out of it. And that’s the whole idea, isn’t it?

  • arash

E-mail is better. That is how I made a friend in Nigeria, a generous prince.

  • midwestslp

But, Arash, I’ll bet if you got a real letter from your Nigerian friend it would feel a hundred times nicer than an email. :)

  • Jendi

Arash, I would say different both have there plus and negative points! Don’t get me wrong I’m not bagging email or the internet infact you’d add at least 100 hours on to my week at work with out technology, infact am posting this comment via blackberry in an airport lounge….need I say more!

I just think the experience and feelings that go with sending and receiving a hand written letter are very different to getting even an awesome email from a mate? Thoughts?

  • arash

Sorry, that was a joke, I thought every body knows about those Nigerian e-mails.
    I have a story;
Nothing was more valuable than the mails we recieved in the army. Hundreds of us; soldiers, circling around the guy who stood up on a rock and yelled out the name of those lucky ones who had a mail. You could hear everybody’s heartbeat. Once I got a letter from my mom and dad and after reading it a million times, I got a pen and paper and I start writing to them, just for the fun of it I replied to my mom imitating her hand writing and the section to my dad was imitation of his.
Two weeks later, I get a chance to make a phone call and I spoke to my mom. I asked her; “Did you get my letter”.
She said;”NO, not only that, but the one we sent you was returned”. :)

I dont know if have a only way, but i think that see god movies, read good books, listening good music, talk with inteligent people help.

And sometimes the universe help you.

In 2003 i was acepeted to a university in a other city (South of Brazil) for class about cinema, but because my family had problems if money i coudant go. I need help my family.

One year after start the first Amazon Film Festival in Manaus. In 2006 the festival give the first prize to a best screnplay for a shor movie, in Amazon.

In 2007 the second prize goes to Criminosos (Criminals), my screnplay.

Last november 13, Criminosos was the winner in th prize for best short movie for the audience.

So how can i explain that?

  • Jade Ruby

I agree that letter writing is a lost art. When I was younger I loved to correspond with different people who moved to other cities.

  • http://www.daybow.com David Hayes

What amazes me is how easily we can communicate these days … and still fail to. It seems that, for every advantage of modern technology, we suffer some setbacks. As easily as relatives can get in touch, it is even easier for strangers trying to sell things to you to get into your home via the net. And after wading through all that junk e-mail, you feel a little less like sending e-mail to anyone. When word processing first came on the scene, I asked a secretary how much easier it had made her life. She gave me an angry stare and said that before word processors, people came to her to have letters typed and the letters were READY to be typed and sent. With word processors, the letters came to her missing information and half finished with the idea of eventually getting the letter done. The effect is that no one has to decide anything and the secretary was typing each letter 12 or more times. Then copiers made it so easy to make a copy that suddenly everyone got a copy of everything. That should mean that people are more informed, but instead it means people are so buried in stuff that they don’t need to know about that they miss the few things they need to be aware of. Plus, if anything distributed is wrong, tracking down the bad information and keeping it from spreading has become a massive job. Then, all this became perceived as so easy, that suport positions like secretaries were eliminated giving the rest of the work force more to get done in the same 8 hour day. Something’s got to give … and it does.

I know your prince well, I get emails from him often. I also got an email from somebody in the Caribbean. Apparently, if I reply to their email I will be a very rich woman. I’m still waiting on my check.

A check? Mine promises to pay me in gold bullion.

    Hello mother, hello father,
Here I am at Camp Grenada.
    Camp is very entertaining,
And they say we’ll have some fun if it stops raining!

I went hiking with Joyce Fivey,
    He developed poison ivy.
    You remember Lennard Skynard,
He got tomain poisoning last night after dinner!

All the counselors hate the waiters,
    And the lake has alligators!
And the head coach wants no sissies,
So he reads to us from something called ‘Ulysses’.

No, I don’t want (this should scare ya),
    But my bunkmate has malaria!
    You remember Geoffrey Hardy,
They’re about to organize a searching party!

Take me home, oh mother, father.
Take me home, I hate Grenada.
Don’t leave me out in the forest,
Where I might get eaten by a bear!

Take me home, I promise that I will not make noise,
Or mess the house with other boys.
    Oh please don’t make me stay;
I’ve been here one whole day!

    Dearest father, darling mother,
    How’s my precious little brother?
    Let me come home if you miss me;
I would even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me!

Wait a minute; it stopped hailing.
Guys are swimming, guys are sailing.
    Playing baseball; gee that’s better.
Mother, father, kindly disregard this letter!

  • http://www.daybow.com David Hayes

    Scott,

They made a board game out of that song.

    Hey Jendi!

Thanks a whole lot. Everyone left to write letters. Now it’s pretty lonely here in cyberspace with just me and Scott. Scott. Scott? SCOTT!!! I guess he left too. Why did you have to wait until I dumped all my stock in paper companies!

  • http://www.threepwood.co.nz Jendi

Sorry David, can’t type much am developing Carpal Tunnel from writing so much!!! unknown hand movement for my right hand…thank god I have to hands or I wouldn’t be able to reply to you!!

    Y M C A

    gonna stay at the Y M C A.

I’m seeing the new ads for toys for Christmas. The toy manufactures want kids to do their drawings on digital input pads and print them off their computers. Maybe they should skip printing them and just e-mail the images to the LCD screen on the front of the refrigerator.

  • http://www.daybow.com David Hayes

OMG! I just found out by accident that I misspelled “Smallville” on the front cover of my book “Smallville: AU.” I don’t know how I’ll get back all the copies in print to replace them. I must have nearly umm … three … copies out there. OKAY! TWO copies. I exaggerated a little. You see, there are no editors to check things like this anymore. And spell check doesn’t help with “Smallville.” “Smallville” is always highlighted as if its spelled wrong.

  • http://www.threepwood.co.nz Jendi

David it’s spelt wrong not spelled wrong :) hahaha

In case any of you missed this announcement on the forum yesterday:

    post by robertwgray:

    “Fantastic news!
Kaleena won best director at the Big Easy Shorts Festival
“alice & huck” won best drama!
    And Matt won best editor!

Thanks again to everyone involved. And Kaleena sends her love from a street named Desire.

    Rob / Allison / Kaleena”

    Jendi,

Let’s not go crying over spelt milk!

One of the hardest words for me to spell correctly is “misspelled.”

  • http://www.daybow.com David Hayes

    Hmmm.

I guess the film festival was in New Orleans. I wonder if they were prepared for Hericane Kaleena?

  • http://www.daybow.com David Hayes

    Hmmm.

Does Santa take Christmas e-mails instead of letters?

  • http://www.daybow.com David Hayes

    Hmmmm.

In my mind’s eye, I see Taylor Nikole trying to remember how to write without technology. She’s dipping the antenna of her phone in ink ….

  • http://www.daybow.com David Hayes

What? Phones don’t have protruding antennae anymore. Wow. Nevermind.

  • http://www.daybow.com David Hayes

Sure is nice knowing I don’t have to count up these posts anymore. I can leave my shoes on.

  • taylor nikole

well email would be much easier…
it takes me like 2 minutes LOL
my typing speed is 100 wpm :-p

Right on, Allison! Just yesterday i started a novel. I had allowed the idea of writing a novel to become an overwhelming burden to me. The fear of failure was definitely snipping at my heels.

But I finally realized I just had to get in there and do it. Like when I had to take over for the Drama Team director at my church. There is no grand moment of “Now I feel 100% ready.” You just have to jump in with both feet and hope for the best.

I loved your post on pride and fear – very inspiring. I copied part of it and I will keep it on hand while I’m writing the novel to remind myself. Thanks so much!

  • taylor nikole

out of 100 books on my iread on facebook i have read 36… therefore off of that list i have about 64 to go…
then in my room i have 50 or so books on my shelves…

need to read all of them :)
i am now on a mission

    i have about 80 to read…
    goodness gracious
i want to finish them all by the middle or end of next yr…

  • Jade Ruby

    80 books in 6-12 months!?!?
    What an achievement.

  • http://www.daybow.com David Hayes

Did Cliff retire? He used to make excellant notes on what he read so we didn’t have to go through all the work.

I’ve got box loads of books I haven’t read. Eye problems made it difficult to sit down and read before the last eight eye surgeries. I have read only one book since. I have to concentrate more on making my eyes behave than the book’s content. Thank God excellant performers like John Glover are willing to read books for me. I should take more advantage of that. I did experiment with having the computer read to me, but that was kind of annoying. The computer pronounced “Chloe” as “Klow.” Maybe the computer felt Chloe’s relationship with all computers made it okay for it to refer to her on a more personal level.

  • arash

I think I will win the contest on how many books I haven’t read!
I used to read a lot in subway (I mean the train not the store) but life has changed so much. It is hard to read these e-books in subway when you have a desk top computer with an old heavy monitor.

  • http://www.daybow.com David Hayes

    Arash,

Having to haul a long enough power cord is a real pain too!

I seriously recommend getting Stephen King’s “Night Shift” audio book from your library. John Glover doesn’t simply read the book — he acts it. I didn’t think I could have a greater appreciation of his skills until I heard that CD. I guess he grills a mean toated cheese sandwich too!

Uh-oh. I think I broke the wrong skin … the skin that is my own skin. Excuse me.

    ”The Day The Internet Died”
based upon “American Pie” by Don McLean

    A short, short time ago…
    I can still remember
How that world wide web would make me smile.
I knew if I could post a lot
That I might make a good joke … maybe not
But, perhaps, we’d all be happy for a while.

    But November I got unconnected.
The web was broken and I … dejected.
No news on my home page –
An abrupt ending to a golden age.

I can remember that I cried
When my modem let out a final sigh
And something left me deep inside …
    The day the internet died.

    So bye-bye, Miss Allison’s Blog.
Drove my keyboard to its limit,
    Now the posters are gone.
Allison’s at Jay’s drinkin’ a scotch and rye
Singin’, “I’ll direct until the day that I die.
Yes, I’m directin’ ‘till the day that I die.”

Did you post to the blog of love?
And would you have faith in God above,
    If Allison told you to?
Do you believe in micro finance …
Or just forget the world and dance …
And have property emerge by chance?

I’m clueless to what a human construct is …
Perhaps a term used in show biz?
And if Juicy Peaches are such a hit,
Why do I always end up … with just a pit?

    I was a lonely, old-aged postin’ ****
Who got hit by the Cookie Lady’s pickup truck,
But I knew I was out of luck
    The day the internet died.

    So bye-bye, Miss Allison’s Blog.
Drove my keyboard to its limit,
    Now the posters are gone.
Allison’s at Jay’s drinkin’ a scotch and rye
Singin’, “I’ll direct until the day that I die.
Yes, I’m directin’ ‘till the day that I die.”

Now for ten days we’ve been on our own
    Actively lazy and skippin’ stones,
’Cross still ponds of icy water.
Remembering when posters sang for Mack Events,
And many readers came and went
Seeking words to lift their spirits higher.

    And while Allison directed Tom,
New blog entries were all but gone.
    The comments became more random
Is this what becomes of fandom?
As Jendi pulled out paper and pen
Others did too … the crowd grew thin
And I found myself alone again
    The day the internet died.

    So bye-bye, Miss Allison’s Blog.
Drove my keyboard to its limit,
    Now the posters are gone.
Allison’s at Jay’s ldrinkin’ a scotch and rye
