a day without driving

What? That’s right, no driving anywhere today. I am in a suburban neighborhood and I chose to actually stay home and think and read and relax and plan and think some more for the day. It was fantastic. This may sound completely ridiculous to the rest of you, but for me, this is huge.

Never do I simply sit and relax, never do I just spend a day working out in a relaxed fashion and then moving into a mellow meditation and onto a day of reading, researching, thought, and writing. I had no idea I could be so productive without running around like a chicken with my head cut off. A day without driving is a day I spent breathing deeply; A day I spent reflecting and enjoying. What a gift. I highly recommend it.

    Hi Allison.
    You’re right, the days where I do not use my car are really rare when I’m home.
    We run everywhere to give the impression that we had a good day. Finally we are losing time and we are tired.
    After traveling for a few days, a day to do nothing at home is a lot of good.

    I have two days like that other than the weekend. Considering I live with four other people, it’s great to have a couple of days when I get the house to myself and I can just hang out, relax and do whatever. Well, when I’m not doing home work anyway. It’s awesome, isn’t it. No annoying distractions, just peace and quiet and you can actually hear yourself think.
    I love days like that. I wish you more of them.

    Sometimes I love driving and sometimes I don’t. When I really want to get out of the house and there’s a car available for me to take (I don’t have my own yet, I only got my licence like two months ago) I love listening to the radio really loud, especially when a good song comes on and then no one can tell me to turn the music down. That’s when I love driving.

    Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of being able to relax either. The stress of everyday life gets to me, way more then it should. Car payments, child support, work, divorce, etc. etc. etc.

    Oddily the only time that this is not the case is when I am with my kids. I look at them and realize that, even though my life is full of stress, seeing the fun me and my kids have together and all the stress I go through to provide for them, makes it all worth it.

    Besides, I’ll be able to retire someday, right?

    These past two days I have been working from home (I live in Mexico and we all had to cuz of the Flu) and it was great. Relaxing, without traffic, not worrying about gas, or anything, just me my computer and my couch…great

    I love to spend time staying home: time to think, to read, to play with Selina (my cat) -… time for new scratches…-

    But also I like to drive… Specially when once at month I go from suburbs of Savona, where I stay and work, to Florence, to home of my parents. I’ve to drive more than 3h on motorway. So I spend this time to immerse myself in my thoughts, looking at panorama outside that changes and changes and changes… And when it rain, the sound of the rain that beats against my car it’s really beautiful…

    Have you ever visit Florence? It’s wonderful…

    Allison, life is too important to be taken seriously!!! I think that everyone needs to slow down and apprieciate this life….not just fly though it at a break neck speed….you can’t truley SEE things, and expierience them, if your speeding past with tunnel vision, focused only on your goal…..so I hate to sound like a cheesey post card….but you gotta learn to STOP sister, and really SMELL the roses…don’t look at them and imagine that they smell great…..go get your nose buried in them flowers!!!!!

    I did this last Saturday! It was amazing what all I accomplished! You always hear people say you need to detox your body but sometimes you need to detox your life. A day without using my phone, car, a computer, and the national news was a day of peace and quiet. And, at the end of the day, I felt refreshed and relaxed…almost as if I’d been on vacation.

    Ah, taking your feet up and just chill is good. I remember back from my previous job that I didn’t take a day off straight for 6 months. It left me feeling drained with frayed nerves and I knew I had to break the routine. So, I took one Saturday (and several other Saturdays whenever I feel I’m going to implode) off from work and started catching up on reading some novels that I’ve set aside for a long time or went back to writing some stories or even follow Mr. Art Attack for the latest art project when his show was on air. :)

    Saturday, August 15, 2009, is a nationwide (and hopefully global) day where nobody drives a car.
