joy and devastation

Sadness and joy all wrapped into one day. Isn’t it strange how we, as human beings, have the capacity to be absolutely elated and totally devastated all at one time?

    Makes me wonder what’s going on with you that you’re having this range of emotions and hoping all’s well.

    In the last 16 months I’ve lost two cats (I usually have 2-3 cats as pets, so that’s a lot), my dog and then my mother. Horrible times…but without those lows, how would we know to celebrate the highs? We just hope they average out.

    You know what Allison it’s weird.. I was reading a book yesterday “Thanks for the memories” by Cecia Ahern and well in one part she wrote

    “It occurs to me how colse happiness and sadness are. So closely knitted together. Such a thin line, a thread-like divide that in the midst of emotions, it trembles, blurring the territory of exact opposites.”

    I was reading that and I thought so true!
    You should read it.. you’ll like it I think!

    I sometimes look back at all the moments that make up my day and reflect on all the various ups and downs I’ve been through, which tends to look like a compass needle dancing around, but I guess if my own needle were pointing to the same heading all day long life wouldn’t be nerely as interesting!

    Yes it is a strange thing how all these different emotions can occur all in the timespan of a day.It is always something that perplexes me.It’s like it’s never enough for us to experiance one emotion that will carry with us throughout the day,we have to have like fifty.In a way I do love that aspect of being human.We can go through different feelings and phases and it can make who we chose to be that specific day.I always thought that I was pretty much in control of my emotions,that I could keep whatever I was feeling intact,especially anger.But I guess one never knows what to expect to happen since so much can happen all at the same time.

    aww i understand that feelings at the same day, is it happens to me now.
    Today is my 25th birthday, im happy because is my day, and im celebrate it with my friends tonight, but in other part im sad because i want celebrate it with part of my family !! they live in other country and i miss them so much!!!!;(

    I don’t even think happiness and joy are the same, but I could see how they could be confused.

    Joy and devastation. I remember feeling both of that in the same day, at the same moment because I couldn’t understand myself at the moment. I think I was depressed. *sigh*

    It seems to me that once we open ourselves up to any extreme emotion, other extremes are more likely to follow. It’s like…after a great cry…someone can come along and say something moderately funny, and after going through the previous intense emotion, moderately funny become hilarious to you in that moment.

    Yeah it is fascinating to see that we can feel sad & happy at the same time even angry too. I have had alot of those days especially recently since I started college I have felt that I am depressed & lonely even when I have the most comforting people around me it’s just crazy! I don’t know feel sad yet happy even angry sometimes because I don’t know who to talk to & it’s crazy that all of us can feel this way yet put up a front to cover that what which we feel.

    I’m sorry you are feeling like that Allison I hope you do feel better :) & remember you are not alone when you feel this way ;)

    Whoever made the commercial for McDonalds captrured this beautifully. First you see the the toddler on the swing. When he is high, he smiles. When he is low, he looks like he is going to cry. Then we see things from his point of view. When he’s high, he can see over the fence and see the neighborhood McDonalds. When he is low, the fence obscures sight of the McDonalds.

    Us, as humans, can deal with so much emotional baggage at any one time, be it happiness or sadness and all in between. Some of it stays with us, whilst some of it is buried – some of it just bubbles under the surface until it’s the right time to come out.

    I think the most important thing that we can learn to do, is to make the best out of everything we feel and just hope that we’re strong enough to end the day on a happy note, even if the sad sometimes outways the happy. This way, not only does it help us, it helps everyone around you and keeps them strong.

    I hope your day was filled with more joy than devastation.

    I definately know how you feel. When my youngest daughter was born (she’s 5 now). She was so precious and I was so happy to have her here, however, she was born 2 months pre-mature. She weighed an even 3lbs when she was born. It took her almost 45 seconds for her to take her first breath and took her 1 month to be able to take her bottle on her own (prior to that, she was being fed by a tube inserted down her throat into her stomach).

    That being said, as much joy as I felt with the wonderful delivery of her in my life, I felt such sadness that this little girl had to go through so much pain to start her life.

    I’ve definitely had a lot more of those devastated/elated moments in the past several months than I would like to experience, but they are fascinating.

    My most recent experience was in the car. As I’ve said before, I lost my hearing last year, but have some hearing with a cochlear implant. Everything sounds really crappy, compared with my memory of what things used to sound like. My favorite thing to do used to be to blast the radio and drive with the windows down. I loved the sound of the wind. With the implant, the wind is too loud, and I can’t hear the music. I got upset and turned off my implant, and then I was amazed at how oddly wonderful it was to feel the wind without hearing it.

    I hope that you are also able to find a new perspective with whatever it is that has affected you today. It’s the only way to make the shift back from devastation to elation.

    What happened?
    Unfortunately, we all have days when we meet the best and worst. The two feelings are related to two separate events or the same?
    I would prefer to know the sadness in the first and end with joy. I love stories with an happy ending.
    Sometimes, our day starts as a dream ends in nightmare.
    When I read your blog, I thought about what you told us in a previous blog when you meet someone inspiring.
    For nearly a month when I read the spoilers from Smallville on the two deaths last episode where your character is featured, I live the two opposing feelings quite often.

    It’s amazing how after your mother has left this world, that it leaves you with such emptiness, yet such fullness of the Love and memories that a mother gave you.

    Afterall, a mother gives the greatest gift of all, life. And as a gardener tends their flowers, a mother nurtures their child’s life with love.

    I find today a day to reflect on that love and that gift. It is truly beautiful. As the days pass, each year, it becomes more vibrant, just as a garden.

    Which leads me to one of my favorite quotes I have read, I don’t remember where I read this, but it stuck with me through the years.

    “Mom, if I had a single flower for every time I think about you, I could walk forever in my garden. One sweet day, I will be able to take your hand and walk with you in it.”
    - What a sweet day that will be. A day when my mother can see the garden that she helped me create. With her love, guidance and life, she taught me my ways. Even with her gone now, she still guides me with memories. You really can NEVER forget a Mother’s Love.

    Allison, I hope your day goes well. May your devastation be outshone by Joy.

    I read what you were blogging about and it made me start to think. I feel that if it weren’t for the emotions that make us feel happy and sad at once than often we wouldn’t know if we were alive. Emotions motivate us and drive us, but most of all they are us.

    Sadness and joy. The two most single important emotions for spiritual health.

    This week at school was definately filled of both. I’m a senior this year at high school and, with the year ending, we have enjoyed Grad Bash, Prom, and all the end of the year experiences. Unfortunately, one of our fellow peers died last week, and I realized how difficult it is to swing back and forth from sadness to joy in a matter of a second. Life goes on, but you don’t want it to, because you want to remember the present. Things are bad, things are good. But I know that us, as intelligent beings and other emotions to explore, that everything will be alright…..Its very difficult to have this faith and I pray, that everyone finds that faith.

    You can choose to be happy or sad and whichever you choose that is what you get. No one else has the responsibility to make someone else happy, no matter what most people have been taught and accept as true. And without saddness, are we truly able to apprieciate the happy times?? And always keep in mind Allison, that being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. It means that you’ve decided to look beyond the imperfections.
