It IS the best video ever! Awesomely powerful.

Amazing! This it is the pure truth made word. The reason for which we must fight. Congratulations I am with you.

“I’m sorry but I don’t want to be an Emperor, that’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another, human beings are like that. We all want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone and the earth is rich and can provide for everyone.”

Great video, and very much of its age, but do you agree with what he says? Should we fight? Is that how we make a better world, through fighting? Against Nazism, sure, against Communism even, but now? Didn’t the US do that in Iraq? Fight to bring democracy and overthrow tyranny? Oh wait, the Republican administration lied, they used the language of democracy and freedom to usurp American democracy and create a client oil state in the middle East. So what do you do? Do you fight for democracy or vote for it? Use the gun or the pen? We might build a world without barriers, but whose world is it, and can it be more equal, or will it be just more imaginative forms of inequality? It’s easy when you are rich, white, middle class, American, to talk about building a better world when you hold the power. A world of reason and of science, says Chaplin. The science for which the world and its people are a test subject, to be analysed and theorised and studied, enabling through science and reason the technology of modernisation, extracting the earth’s resources to build the modern world, until… the earth speaks back through its changing climate. Who do we fight then? The very same science and reason that we thought would make the world a better place through modernity?

Ok, forget Foucault. Try Naomi Klein or George Monbiot.

Sharing, community, feelings, journeys, they are all nice, but don’t let them obscure truths. A mentor relationship is a power relationship, too. That’s what makes them so meaningful, so significant, but also so fraught.

It’s good to have varying opinion. It’s good to know you have someone you can trust so much to help you get to the tough answers to even tougher questions. I wouldn’t worry Allison, so much about anyone elses comfort level. You are the seeker. You are the one who must decide if the questions you ask in life need to be taken to a “higher power” or someone with more knowlege about a subject than yourself. Sometimes though – it is ALL TOO important, to ask youself the tough questions and go with your heart. I know, I know. Some “religions” tell you that only a fool follows her heart but, the (heart)we speak of, is really only the part of your mind that thinks about compassion. About love. About looking at the world through those rose colored glasses when everyone around you will see it through the glasses they’ve just sat on or smudged with finger prints. I don’t believe that you (always) go speak with a teach/guru because you don’t have the answers you seek but, maybe (sometimes) because your afraid you might be wrong about the answers you’ve already come up with? I state that in the form of a question only because that is often the case with myself. I’ve made A LOT of bad choices and gotten some really bad advice. Learning to trust others enough to let them in and help you come to the answers you seek in life is important but, it is most important to trust yourself to come up with those answers and live life on your terms. If your constantly seeking advice…are you really living on your terms or someone elses? Food for thought.
    Please take care.

One of the difficulties with science and ‘reason,’ is our seeming isolation from each other as individuals, is hard to see as illusion here in our Western conceptions of Realty. Even in most of those who want to form a relationship with their ‘Higher Power,’ they can only conceive of an ‘I, Thou’ relationship. The subtleties of Higher Consciousness continue to elude them. Even still, with the new advances in genetics, there is STILL trouble regarding us as the “Family of Man,” let alone realizing the truth of *cousin* Bessie the cow.

Is it pride and greed that prevent us from forming a civilization where we can recognize ourSelves as all one family of humans (at least).

I loved the message of the video and Charlie Chaplin’s speech, it was so moving and touching, as I am writing this a tear is scrolling down my left cheeck because despite how moving this is, the world we live in right now is full of all the things he condemned in his movie, hate, racism, greed, etcetera. Now I feel as If I must look for it, and I hope to live long enough to see the world start to change for the better. This is so inspirational and I am looking for a day in the history of men when no one shall racially profile another, the money a person owns doesn’t matter, but a persons innermost happiness, a world full of joy, and compassion, a world full of happiness but most importantly a world where each human got a chance to shine. This is so moving, the only fallacy of course is Chaplin’s toothbrush mustache….. Now it is associated with all things Hitler, even though I know back then it was fashionable to wear a mustache like that. Well anyways, have a great day you guys(: Peace

    Bravo Allison, bravo! Very inspiring…

Ok I’ll admit, and be the first one to sday it, I’m a littler buzxzed from the friday night drinks of beer. A litle southern comfort dint hurt either. (Thats atype of whiskey in texas. Hey Dave. Old brit friend. That makes for a good time. On the cab ride I was think about Allison, like we ALL do… Come people admit it., If I met her then I would confess my love for her like ive done to many times in the past couple of days.lol . but this time i [pictured it in my head and her response was why? Why do you love me?

I was speechl ess. I could not come up with anything. I mean shes beautyful, but is that the only reason? I started thinking of what is most important thing of love/ trust. Trust is the most inportamt thing in love. what trust is define?
    Webster say;

    1

a: assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something b: one in which confidence is placed

    2

a: dependence on something future or contingent : hope b: reliance on future payment for property (as merchandise) delivered : credit

    3

a: a property interest held by one person for the benefit of another b: a combination of firms or corporations formed by a legal agreement; especially: one that reduces or threatens to reduce competition

    4

    archaic: trustworthiness

    5

a (1): a charge or duty imposed in faith or confidence or as a condition of some relationship (2): something committed or entrusted to one to be used or cared for in the interest of another (love cut and paste)

But hes not relible. never trust a guy who can change one letter in his name and became febster. I believe love and trust can be boiled down to one mean in unisin, unison, unicon? Equally.

    Ed say;
Trust/love; placing complete and total confedince and secrets (dark and funny) onto another person knowing full well that if one day that trust was broken, it will never affect your feelings towards them when the betrayal happens. Its giving yourself fully to the other person by promising them the entire world and then deliviering it to them one day at a time with intererest paid in full.

Ok, so maybe I really really like Alllison. and her hot smle and hot body are 90 perfect of that factor.

*EDIT* Charlie Chaplin, isnt he the one who entered a charlie chaplin look-a-like contest and come in third?

    • EdiciusEric

Sorry, I dont remember typing this. I can’t spell for crap, when I am drunk, huh? I’m surprised I got in an edit and I still dont know what that bought thing is all about. I was going to erase it, but hey at least one person likes it.

      • Beth

I was gonna make a comment comparing it to drunk dialling but i never got around to it :)
I may have been the one who liked it but after last night i dont remember …

        • Beth

That thing about Charlie Chaplin coming third, I read that somewhere too lol

          • EdiciusEric

I remeber hearing on the “Lucky number Slevin” movie, and I looked it up. In 1916, in either Monte Carlo or Switerland, Charlie Chaplin entered a Charlie Chaplin look alike conetest and came in third. The contest was judged on looks, and style of Charlie’s walk. LOL… someone walked better that him at his own walk.

It goes on to say that Charlie’s bother Sid, took first place. (rumors.) Charlie was tempted to give the people “lessons” on the Chaplin walk because he said that they were doing the “WALK” wrong. I think he was just a sore loser… J/k…

        • EdiciusEric

Lol, its like we are drunk dailing each other. (I’m checking my spelling this time. It all looks correct. I also feel like using bigger words to give myself a challenge.) Lol, although I’m not as drunk, tonight.

  • Zsolti

    Szia Allison!
It is very interesting, that an actor from the silent film industry, could use such a motivational and powerful speech. I have seen this video repeatedly and it is no surprise that Charlie Chaplin was the most famous film star in the world before the end of World War I. Her speech tauched my heart and uplifted my soul. But ”we think too much and feel too little” about The Great Dictator speech?
Do your best an enjoy your day!

the world can only get better when we lurn 2 love 1 another, but love is a feeling that can only happen if the person trusts and trust can only happen when the persons actions provide sofishent evadence 4 a person 2 boleev that there is no thret from the person and thats ware feer comes in. a person will boleev that a thret exists if they wont it 2 be true or if they feer it mite be true. with the feer a person will not alow them selvs 2 take the chance 2 trust and love will never forme. love can not servive in feer. feer is a contagus poisen that spreeds like a virus onlu throo words and actions. so we will never have peace in this world till we learn controle our feer take chances and risk being hurt. in the worst cases like me ware a person fears every 1 and every thing, it requiers being willingly gullable 2 fite the feer. when a person cant tell witch feer is just and witch is just paranoia, they need 2 take the chance. and then comes hope. yes hope, hope is the only thing that can fite feer, and thats the problem. see no 1 boleevs in eny thing that gives hope eny more, thats why we idel worship. for some its monny or power, for others its a deity, real or imagened, whos words have bin twisted 2 searv the will of the boleever or the leader of the boleef. then theres hero worship, people looking 2 other people as heros, like the way i see allison mack. but so offen the “hero” becomes full of him or her self and bilds on pride till they fall hard taking all the hope of the people with them. this is 1 more reason i like allison mack, because she dosent try 2 be what we wont but insted tryes 2 be what makes her happy and brings us along. allison leeds by example witch is a verry hard place 2 fall from that alwase has countless people 2 catch you and help you 2 rebild. so the solution 2 the problem of fixing the world is 2 be more like allison mack and leed by example. do what makes you happy, and be selfless, the rest will take care of its self. after all a real hero duz not do it 4 the atenchon but just because its the rite thing 2 do, and offen the bigest hero who makes the biggest diference is not the 1 with the bigest fashyest feets of heroics, but the 1 whos works are 2 suttel 2 be notesed. like a mom teaching her child not 2 hit, or a kid risking there safety & status in hischool 2 step in and protect another kid from bullying, or a person adopting a child, or even a teacher or a coatch telling a child i boleev in you, or perhaps a probashen worker saying “why do you ceep doing this? i can see it in your eyes you wont 2 do better and you no how and i boleeve in you, i think you can” offen the biggest changes in the world are made from the smallest acts of kindness. an average ordenary every day super hero is an over worked singel mom who still fiends time 4 her children and duz not forget 2 tell them i love you. be a hero like allison mack and leed by example.

The big question is, how do we get from where we are to the kind of world he envisioned? The world is grossly unfair in both huge ways and tiny ways. This leads to resentments and anger and divisiveness. There is a lot of healing that must be done in this world. Legislating fairness has failed. Enforcement of even the imperfect laws we have has failed. Justice is a very rare event and usually unattainable. And there are a growing number of people who do not even remotely want the kind of loving, caring world Mr Chaplin talked about — people who love to get shocked reactions and cause chaos and disorder. How do we get there? HOW DO WE GET THERE? I have to try to find joy in the small victories because I will not live to see the day when there is peace or even a general acceptance or tolerance between the peoples of this world.

    • http://twitter.com/jhamilton_hall James Hall

This is quite exaggerated in the way you state it. The most profound political change on this planet (so far), was when the reins of power were exchanged peacefully between George Washington and John Adams. The entire world has yet to get used to it.

      • DavidHayes1956

I’d like to know in what way it is exaggerated.

If you look at a worldwide picture, how is it fair that a child born in Japan can expect to live 82 years, but a child that is born in Angola will, on average, only live to age 38? I consider that grossly unfair. How is it fair that Billy had 1 more M&M in his bag of candy than Cindy got in hers? That’s unfair in a very minor way … even though Cindy didn’t think so.

When the copper pipes get stolen out of your house, the police give you a receipt to turn into your insurance rather than dust for finger prints or investigate in any way. How does that enforce the law? When a signed legal contract goes to court and the judge decides how much the person that didn’t fulfill the contract has to pay rather than being bound by what the contract requires, how does that enforce the Law. When prosecutors decide not to ever take people to court for certain crimes, how does that enforce the law.

And why do we have something called a “Justice System.” It should be called “A sometimes appropriate consequences system.” If a man has money stolen from him, at the end of the justice system’s work, does the man get his money back? If his property is damaged, is it repaired or replaced? If he is hurt, is the pain taken away? If a woman is raped, does the court un-rape her? If a person is killed, is that person’s life restored? True justice escapes us. The court couldn’t hope to restore what is taken, but can there be a society where people are protected and young people are educated in a way that they don’t become the kind of people that would do harm to someone else or their property?

And show me a message forum on the internet which would represent a small microcosm of society where no one needs to be moderated to keep members from behaving in a mean and hurtful way to one another.

The only way to declare victory is to do something that has become quite common — adopt a philosophy that states that nothing is truly good or bad. Then you can say that the world, whatever may be going on, is NOT bad. By definition, it can’t be. If people suffer, it is part of the way the world is supposed to be … and we have nothing to aspire to.

        • tabbymarie

An additional option is to create just two definitions of the word “good” and the word “bad” that all people no matter what religion or belief system they use, can agree to. That seems a lot more ordered and less chaotic to me. That is true education. Make the definitions and teach that and only that as a standard. You have your answer to almost every problem. No confusion is left behind unless it is simply a conflict of values.

The problem with choosing to remove definition of good and bad and live as if there are none is that of the “golden rule” concept. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This works if and ONLY if everyone in the world would want to be treated in a loving and kind way. But that’s not the case, right? We’ve got people who like to be hurt and they like to hurt. So that creates chaos. If you come up with definitions instead that ALL people can agree on, you now have a global standard to measure against. Does Action A live up to the global definition of Good? If so, then it’s good. If it lives up to the definition of Bad then it is bad. Whatever that definition is…

Many people say “we need to educate people!!” but on what? Whose beliefs? Whose’s vision of rightousness? Jesus’? Not everyone believes in Jesus and will therefore reject anything else that comes from your mouth if you say that. No, we are a smart race. We can globally come together at one level or another and decide, “okay yeah, this is a good definition of Good and Bad. let’s go with this.”

          • bourdieuboy

“An additional option is to create just two definitions of the word “good” and the word “bad” that all people no matter what religion or belief system they use, can agree to. ”

Language doesn’t work like that. The meaning of words is not fixed or fixable – or rather the act of fixing meaning is a political one. Language is not separable from the social world, it is constitutive of the social world in which we live. We can’t define meaning then step back and admire our handiwork. It’s not science. Confucius wrote about this 2500 years ago – ?? – language and power are basically the same thing. So “creat[ing] just two definitions of good and bad” is another way of calling for some form of political reform of revolution. Something that everyone could agree on? That would need global institutions with more power than the ones that already exist.

Except there is a global institution that almost everyone agrees with, and that it capitalism, the most revolutionary system of all, but one for which language and power are limitlessly malleable.

          • DavidHayes1956

I’d have to know a little more about how a true capitalist system would work. The system works great in the US … as long as you are the person with the capital. If the people taking profits do not assure that the people that work for them have a chance to earn a living wage without having to sacrifice family and health to do then the system isn’t working. If they don’t take responsibility for the damage they do to the environment in the process, the system doesn’t work — because if world doesn’t become toxic due to the system, nothing can continue. If people can not benefit from their own efforts, then the system isn’t working. If the system requires have nots to exist for some to profit, then the system isn’t working.

Also, I agree with Tabby that we need a common vocabulary or understanding to be able to communicate. As long as we aren’t isolated from each other, we can not avoid conflict without understanding each other. But communicating well is no guarantee of avoiding conflict.

Also, I appreciate Tabby’s comments on the Golden Rule. I have tried to communicate that same concept with poor results — that in a world with such distorted values, I don’t necessarily want for me what other people wants for themselves.

          • bourdieuboy

“The system works great in the US … as long as you are the person with the capital. ” That pretty much sums it up!

          • DavidHayes1956

If that’s enough, then I’m ready to continue this discussion on Twitter.

          • EdiciusEric

Do you have the twitter conversation? I’d be interested to read on that.

          • http://twitter.com/jhamilton_hall James Hall

“I’d have to know a little more about how a true capitalist system would work. The system works great in the US … as long as you are the person with the capital.”

That’s just it. We don’t have a “true capitalist” system, nor do we want one. All of those so called flaws that you state are being dealt with, but not to your satisfaction it seems. But of course, it’s great to live in these United States. . . One of the things that did me right was to hear of our students wanting to go, had already been, out living in the under-served nations doing what they could to improve the quality of life, while earning their degree.

So, as you type these complaints, you are active in trying to improve someone’s quality of life aren’t you? That’s one of the things that Allison does so well, and makes me proud to be one of her fans.

          • DavidHayes1956

If Allison is actively trying to help someone’s quality of life in any way other than blogging about it when in the mood, I haven’t heard about it — which isn’t to say that she hasn’t just that she doesn’t publicize her good works if she does. The complaints I type about are to make people who seem to think the world is great as is (because it is working well for them) more aware so that they might decide to work towards reform too. You can’t fix something if you can’t see where it’s broken. As for me, I try to lead a decent law abiding life and speak up or step in when people are being mistreated. When I was working, I donated more than it was financially reasonable for me to food banks. I risked my job and financial security by standing up to my employers to make sure the products they produced were the safest and best quality that they could be. Now that I am not working, I share what comes my way or do without when I’m barely getting by to make sure someone else in the same or worse situations than me gets fed. I taxi people around all hours of the day or night when they need to get somewhere. I have 2 families living in 2 homes I own for no rent even though the families each have more income than I do. I gave away an RV I owned so a man I barely knew didn’t have to sleep outside last winter even though I had someone ready to buy the RV from me for $3000.00. I do what I can despite having 2 social workers trying to train me to be more self motivated and less empathetic. I’m just a normal guy doing what I can with what I have.

          • Stacyannroe

            my reply is above

          • EdiciusEric

Fair words, but like Tabby said, and you have stated, (“Except there is a global institution that almost everyone agrees with” Strong underlining o the word ALMOST.)
Capitalism only works for those whose wish to make as much money as they can… It destroys a person willingness to work for the joy of it and replaces it with a willingness to work for money. Personally, I dont want to work for money, I want to work for love and life, but because that cost money I have to work for it. So my joys and love of life are placed in the “hobby” side of Capitalism; instead of being my main goal in life.

          • http://twitter.com/jhamilton_hall James Hall

“Capitalism only works for those whose wish to make as much money as they can…”
Oooo! That is not true! Capitalism works by ‘driving’ down prices, and creating surplus. Those masterful strategic Capitalists are compensated well, but their society benefits by having lower prices and more variety of consumables. And joy is a peculiar thing that is quite distinct from being motivated only by monetary compensation, as exhibited by the fact that we also have a NON-profit sector, who also earn paychecks to exchange for goods and services produced by other people besides themselves.
Once you find that elusive joy though, you’ll be able to appreciate any and all means you participate in to produce; for your society (which includes you), and for your leisure. So even though the barons of Capitalism can make tons of money for themselves, the real beneficiary of Capitalism is the little guy, who can finally afford some things that used to be very hard to procure– unless you DID make a ton of money. (A ton of $100 bills would be: $90,800,000.00 hot off of the press.)

Now we have to work on the ecology of our planet.

          • EdiciusEric

First off, everything we are talking about can not be placed in the true or false column of conversation. When speaking about Capitolism it will always boil down to opinion. Everything you have said so far on the subject is not true, it is only your opinion, but in my view, if prices are lowered, its because the proprietor can make more money from the lower prices becuase he can sell to more people. I agree, the Capitol market can find an equilibrium and it might benifit the little guy in some way, but I feel that it is a system set up for people who want to make money… they hold that idea up higher than any other standard. It is set up by the greedy, for the greedy.
I’ll agree some non profit centers are in place because of peoples passions, but that doesnt mean that the orginazation doesnt make money. Nonprofit, for a business, simply means whatever money in surplus is generated, it is funneled back into the org. Most NPO have to rely on goverment grants and donations from others. Basically, if I want to give to an organization that I feel is a good business for the US, (Say the Keep the homeless children of America safe from kipnappers Org.) I would have to work at something I hate (ex. Cleaning Libaries as a janitor. Acually, I might like that. Assume I would hate it.) to make money so that I could donate to a passion of keeping children safe. And how well can I rely and have faith in a goverment that has an org. like KTHCOASFK losing money and unable to stay a float because all the would-be workers have to earn a living, when I feel it should do more to protect its citizens by other means that simply throwing money at an org. in the form of a grant.
In Conclusion, Capitolism does make it to where peole can donate thier money for a good cause, I just feel that we could be better people if we didnt have to, but instead gave our time to keeping children safe, because I’m sorry Mr. Hall, it is really hard for a noble person to make it in Capitolist World.

          • http://twitter.com/jhamilton_hall James Hall

This opinion of yours EdiciusEric, “I feel that it is a system set up for people who want to make money…” Is a little misguided. The system wasn’t ‘set up’ it just occurred when people began to have the freedom to take advantage of the law of supply and demand. The calculus of anticipating what the people will want in great quantities, and gearing up to be able to strike while the iron is hot, isn’t always easy. However, what Capitalism does do is give more people the chance to build their own dynasties from scratch, and NOT because they are a “Peer of the Realm.”
That’s something about showbiz I like, where the product in demand is the talent of an artist, who can be insulated from all the ‘cold’ calculations of business by the agent. And now with the Internet we get to have more intimate feedback from many of the artists themselves.

I can see you make a more reasonable case for capitolism here, but I only agree with it on the point of when it was first set up… We overthrew our King and established a free market where capitolism roamed free, which was a good system for a country thats barely beginning out of the tyranny of a newly overthrown king, but as time moves on, i believe a new system is needed to stablize our economy- because, in not placing new rules, we have allowed ourselfs to be run by “3000 kings one mile away, rather than one king 3000 miles away.”
I believe the freedom fighters of our country would be greatly disappointed to see all the kings that our running our so-called “free market” right now… I also believe that when the demand for workers decrease and thier pay decreases with it, that suppy and demand no longer works. I liken the low wages a man gets for a full honest days work closer to slavery than the laws of supply and demand.
Thinking about it now, we can trace the evolution of a king to mean both in the form of a ruler over an empire. Wal-Mart, Mc Donalds, Sony… all considered empires.
Define the word slavery and see if it matches the defination of a man who can barely feed his family on a full weeks work.
Capitolism has lead the rich to be able to higher and pay people just enough to keep them barely feed and housed, unable to support a family.
In doing so, they have the ability to control what he buys and where he stays, and in doing so, they have the ability of contoling which school their kids will go… if thier kids have to leave school early to work for food to eat… its all about control. With it, the rich can always control the poor…

          • http://twitter.com/jhamilton_hall James Hall

“its all about control. With it, the rich can always control the poor..” That doesn’t fly since it’s a total illusion, due to the intricacies of Consciousness (With a capital C!). The goal then is to arrive at freedom of consciousness (With a small c!), where total comfort is a complete state of the mind, and independent of anything the body can, and does, experience. Therefore; the ‘control’ it’s all about, is control over one’s (With a small o!) own thought processes.

          • EdiciusEric

I have no idea what point you are trying to make. Are you saying control is an illusion? That, because of Capitolism, the rich dont get to decide where the poor live, what they eat, where thier kids go to school, or how much money per hour they will recieve for work/labor?
“The goal then is to arrive at freedom of consciousness” -James Hall
My goal is for everyone in the US, to be able to support thier family. For them to live a healthy life. For them to live a safe life, from all of the terrors of the world. (Foreign and Domestic) I also believe some people’s goals are for them to be kings among us and control every aspect of a free market to their own advantage. Capitolism allows them to do that.
I’m am against any system, (imaginary, illusional, or real) that makes someone a king above me… Not in my country. I wont stand for anyone wanting to use our free market as a tool to control the less fortunate it degrades America and the beliefs we were built on.
Don’t you believe, if there was something better for America than Capitolism, should we not at the least explore it? I mean thats the purest form of the American spirit… there is always something better.

As you have focused on the mere material, the U.S. one dollar bill already has the answer printed on the back. Note that this important message of the pure American Spirit is printed on the $1 bill, NOT the $10,000 bill. This almost forgotten global spiritual goal is available to ALL Americans; so that kingly influence of the materially advantaged has been nullified in the good ole U. S. of A.!

In God We Trust. These people arent Gods Hall… they are men who abuse the system of Capitolism and all the ideas they stand for. You speak so highly of this system but you have no idea how peole use it to turns themselves into kings by turning others into legalized slaves. Capitolism is an embarressment at times.

Sorry, but with the ability at any time for any of these so-called legalized slaves to become kings if they can take advantage of the market, this is the best economic system we have had (so far). And sorry, but you don’t really know what you speak of when you try and use the word ‘slave’. Plus, once again you are ignoring that this is not a pure capitalist economy, but mixed capitalism and socialism, (and there are people who would want to get rid of our socialism).

“And sorry, but you don’t really know what you speak of when you try and use the word ‘slave’.” -James Hall
World English Dictionaryslave (sle?v) — n 1. a person legally owned by another and having no freedom of action or right to property 2. a person who is forced to work for another against his will 3. a person under the domination of another person or some habit or influence: a slave to television 4. a person who works in harsh conditions for low pay 5. a.a device that is controlled by or that duplicates the action of another similar device (the master device) b. ( as modifier ): slave cylinder
Take a look at definition number four, Mr Hall, because one of us doesnt know the definition and its not me. Capitolism makes a SLAVE out of weak-willed people who are not strong enough to make it by themselves and need more help than the normal person and you support it and you hide behind the “it’s-fair” arguement to perhaps ease your conscience or maybe you really are that ignorant. Whatever the case, dont ever tell me I dont know what Im talking about. You follow the principals of money and worship it by not caring who gets hurt as long as you make a buck. I follow the princeapals of our forefathers by asking for freedom from the chains of an obbpressing Capitolisic market. When people suffer while others flourish that is a disgrace for America. A true American would never want people to suffer to gain a dollar.
“Plus, once again you are ignoring that this is not a pure capitalist economy, but mixed capitalism and socialism,” -James Hall
You dont speak of socialism, you speak and praise Capitolism in all its glory. That is what we are aruging here, and I haven’t forgotten. I still stand behind my original thesis and have backed it up with serval points. Capitolism only works for those who sih to make as much money as they can… It doesnt work for the poor man who doesnt want to be rich, he only wishes to feed his family, or he only wishes to get and raise a family and has no interest in making money.
Thats what it boils down too, Money… you want it… I dont want it, but I need it. You cant seem to comprehend that.

And I already said: “Oooo! That is not true! Capitalism works by ‘driving’ down prices, and
creating surplus. Those masterful strategic Capitalists are compensated
well, but their society benefits by having lower prices and more variety
            of consumables.”

That benefit is considered negated when his wages are driven down by the same “well compensated Capitalists.” He gets less money but pays less for food… But the cost of living raises every year. I see that as a problem.

Interesting comments on the questions of universal good and bad…
“This works if and ONLY if everyone in the world would want to be treated in a loving and kind way. But that’s not the case, right? We’ve got people who like to be hurt and they like to hurt.”
I dont know who says the quote of “a sadist is just a masochist who follows the golden rule” (Thomas Cathcart: just looked it up.), but that fits into your thesis pretty well, I think.
Your post gives a lot to think about…

          • EdiciusEric

“This works if and ONLY if everyone in the world would want to be treated in a loving and kind way. But that’s not the case, right? We’ve got people who like to be hurt and they like to hurt.” -Tabby… (something I forgot the last name)
Actually, Ive been thinking and have come up with a theory. Your assumption of the golden rule is very different from the one my theory puts forward.
First, let us assume that your statement above would be true. That would mean no one in the world would want to be treated unfairly and unjustice. The world would be perfect… in the eyes of the people who dont want to be hurt.
Now let us assume that the entire population of the people in our minds consisted of people who do want to be hurt and treated unfairly and unjust. Although we can not concieve of such a place because of our upbringing, (Acutally its easy for me to see it.) We can assume that the golden rule would also be followed here, but I believe it would be just as hard for them. Imagine that they only want the hurt and suffering to be on them, just like here we only want the kindness brought to us through love and harmony. In the second world we would see that it is just as hard to hurt people then it is to help them in ours. Admittedly, it does come easier for some than others in both worlds, but the majority of the mirror worlds would be the same, just backwards in nature.
Now, pretend of a world where everyone is indifferent to one another. Any and all actions are not looked on as good or bad, but merely a medium of our first two worlds. The golden rule, in my opinion, would work the best here. Everyone doesn’t care and they dont hurt one. another. They have no motivation to hurt or suffer and if the do, in our eyes, suffer… they dont care they just accept it and keep on going as nothing had happened.
In conclusion, I believe your quote can be changed to state that the golden rule works if and ONLY if everyone in the world wanted to be treat the “same”. With that in mind, we can understand that not everyone in our world wants to be treated the same; thereby making the golden rule ineffectual. My theory is to propose a new quote into the world that can inspire more balance to our world than that of the golden rule.

Sadly the best I can come up with is… The A. Mack Rule: (Named after my future exwife.) “Treat others as they wish to be treated; without sacrificing your own morals and/or health; unless you so desire.”

        • EdiciusEric

I guess a person’s point of view is a great factor in stating the status of the world in its current state. To some, it can be viewed as good and to others as bad, fair or unfair is just a relative term that can be changed from one persons point of view to the other. True some punishments can never return life back to the way it was before it was tarnished by the crime, but consequence aren’t put in place for that purpose; they exsist as an attempt to prevent the reaccurance of the crime.

In the trail of giving us life and liberty through the criminal system of lawyers and judges and laws we give up certain rights. “Toensure peace must prepare for war” You can adjust the quote to say: In order to give ourselves liberty we must be prepared to give up our freedom.

This post, most likely didnt help at all, but I would like to say; David you cant care too much about something like the state of the world. It is always going to be bad and having carethis much will only hurt yourself. I’m not saying dont care at all. Just saying that when unfair and bad things happen, you can’t expect to fix it.

Thats pretty much what I took from your post.

I think we are going towards that future he invisioned and there is a lot of resistence on the way. It was only a few years ago that the Cathloic church apologized for the imprisionment of Galileo. That was a huge step forward in the relationship between church and science. The events of Jordon was a step forward with the statements from the Queen.

I’m just saying you can’t call the entire world dark when there are still grey areas willing to be light.

It was a dark and stormy night. (I’m lying. It was a sunny day.) My buddy and I were just driving down the road, in our car, minding are own business, (I was yelling at people passing by like a jerk.) When out of nowhere this cop pulls us over. My buddy and I look at each other, when he stops all I can do is stare at the brown paper bag on the dashboard. I shake my head because I know they are going to want to look in it. I see the cop walking over to my side of the car; so I say fine… I grab the brown paper bag and fly out of my car heading towards the nearby woods. The cop automaticly yells for me to freeze and get on the ground but I just kept running. He pulls out his gun but can not bring himself to fire. I run in a straight line for about a half a mile hoping to lure him away from the car so I could double back and make a brake for it with my buddy. When I do, I see that more cops have his in cuffs already and are trying to interrogate him, but he just smiles and laughs without answering a single question. All he says in that I am unarmed so they have no reason to shoot me; smart buddy, but the fact is even if your flee from an officer they have enough reason to shoot you. I stay still for a minute so I can think but then the noise of the helicopters over-head drown out my thoughts. YES, they brought in helicopters just for me. I would have come up with a good plan if the dogs didnt catch my scent and forced me to run earlier than expected. I ran faster this time, because I had brought this brown paper bag with hard earned money and there was no way they were going to get it without a fight. I must have ran for 500 miles, (250 feet) before the biggest cop in the world brought me down with a baseball bat. (A skinny ass 5′ nothing cop tripped me up. and jumped on top of me.) I was caught but something had to help, this couldnt be the end, they can’t WIN… (They won.) More cops join in and wrestle me down and handcuff me too. One of the cops picks up the brown paper bag and opens it. I couch up a little blood and yell out. “FINE… Take it; it’s all yours”

The 5 foot nothing one hundred and fifty pound cop reaches in the bag and pulls out two donuts.

You care wayyy too much about what people on the internet say. F’ em. Seriously, you will get no great insight from them and you will never please them. Everyone will always have some bone to pick or some slight gripe. Also, people who have no clue about your current situation will offer advice about how to make it better (see, what I am doing).

Best thing you can do is close the comment section. There is nothing to be learned from this. Put your head down and plow straight ahead. Use your voice as just that. A voice! Don’t enter any sort of conversation and take nothing into consideration that is said (ignore this).

Keep the focus on your career and stop trying to engage people. People are horrible. I know, you think humans are great. Humans are wonderful; there aren’t many if any humans on the internet. It is self-serving, socially awkward and unhinged folk who finally have a place to voice horrible opinions without any threat of retaliation.

Long story short, the best way to spread any type of message is to just put it out there and not engage in any discussion. Just say what you want to say and don’t give the tools a chance at rebuttal. Seriously, don’t! They will always have something negative to say. They will even engage your supporters if you open up an avenue for them to do so.

Put your word out there and give no avenue for anyone to question it or sway the impressionable folk who may embrace it. People are easily swayed; don’t give the jerks a chance to do so.

This is my first visit to this webpage and as I didn’t take the time to thoroughly read all of the comments it wouldn’t be fair to comment on them, good or bad. However, the underlying theme seems to be the same for all of us in that we all face circumstances that are beyond our control.
A wife belittles her husband and he in turn goes to the office, sits behind his manager’s desk and spends the day pitting the employees against one another. A hard nosed Math teacher sees that Jimmy is….again…asleep at his desk and assumes he is lazy. Not knowing that the little boy is too afraid to sleep at home when his daddy has been drinking too much. Hasty judgements based on quick opinions. What if we tried to see the circumstances from all sides rather than only the viewpoint of where we happen to be standing?
I know we can’t fix everything and there will always be the mean spirited person who for some unexplainable reason appears to experience joy through someone’s pain. And we are all human and we will fail miserably at times even with the best of intentions. However; I know in my own life there have been opportunities for me to have shown understanding and I casually tossed that chance aside. I’m sure there have been numerous times when I have administered justice that was fully warranted and yet mercy would have yielded a much better result. I just know that we won’t change anything unless we begin with ourselves first. To take the high road and offer forgiveness (when possible) instead of retribution or coldness. Kindness is fast becoming an endangered species and gentleness is almost extinct. So…come on folks…and please prove me wrong. We can do better. I know we can. Or at least, I know that I can.

I was in a stage make-up class here in New York when I was much, much younger than I am now. The make-up artist/instructor was obviously European, but I did not where she originally came from. I mentioned that I had finally seen Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator” the previous evening and how much I had admired it. “Yeah,” she said, “Very funny, hitting storm troopers on the head with pots. If we had done that we would have been shot.” This was my first experience with someone who had survived that terrible time. I did not know what to say to her. She never had much patience with me after that. Chaplin’s intent was clear to me, but I could not deny her own experience. He was brave to make Hitler and the Nazis the target of his ridicule. But I know she was probably braver than I could ever imagine.
I’m glad you’re a New Yorker these days, Allison. Maybe we’ll run into each other some time and exchange a smile. My husband, whom I married 24 years together on the first day it was legal for us last year, is not the sci-fi/superhero fan that I am, but he became totally hooked by your work on Smallville. Your work as a director impressed me quite a bit, I must also add. “Hatred is never ended by hatred, but by love alone is healed.” –The Dhammapada, a Bhuddist text.

Sorry for the undedited post above. Very busy when I wrote it and was not able to proof it. “…was obviously European, but I did not KNOW where she originally…” and “..My husband, whom I married AFTER 24 years together…”

Early today, I watched a program on PBS about Queen Victoria’s reign. I am ashamed to admit that the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Germany is Nazis. Queen Victoria’s husband price Albert was German and what a magnificent man he was. The world would probably be a much different place without the influence he had … and boy did he have to work at it to be allowed to have any influence! He believed that free trade was the way to see that the people in the world got to share in the riches that the world has to offer. The only thing that gets in the way of people doing well in this world is … people. The best laid plans of mice and men …. Anyway, I saw a much more dramatic picture of what we face today in the potato famine in Ireland. To me, it is almost hard to believe that anyone of Irish decent lives today after what happened. The really wealthy land owners had control of Parliament and made sure that the tariffs that kept grain prices high stayed in place … despite the fact that England no longer had the means to feed all its people and that America had huge surpluses to sell. So the Irish got only potatoes to live on and when the crop was destroyed by disease, there was no free market to make food available to them cheaply and no established socialistic program to see that people got fed. hey ate nettles for a while, left the country in mass, but mainly, they died. The extremely wealthy didn’t allow fair trade. I’m not sure if that represents capitalism or if it represents government interfering with capitalism by imposing tariffs to prevent it from functioning in a beneficial way. I guess if you look at it as the natural order of survival of the fittest, then the next thing to happen ‘naturally’ would have been an uprising by the multitude of unfed against the wealthy minority. That was avoided as well by people interfering so that nature didn’t take another gruesome course. Anyway, it was good to see some perspective on the current situation by taking a look back to what happened before … and we certainly aren’t at the point that Ireland got to and I pray that we don’t get to that point again. No doubt some will get to that point. Some get there in the best of times. I just hope that the numbers of people that do don’t grow too large and my prayers are with anyone currently facing that situation.

Well’p, Allison’s birthday is next month. As a steadfastly loyal Superman fan, Allison entered my awareness as a new character in the Superboy legacy when she appeared in “Smallville” lo those many years ago. Finding out that she (Chloe) is Lois Lane’s cousin, snuggles her neatly into my heart for Superboy. One thing I wish they had expanded was the Legion of Superheroes, but oh well. So I guess as a long-time Superboy fan, who hasn’t bought a comic in years, Chloe would become a favorite character of mine. I swear that I am so glad that Chloe was there through the entire series, and the final episode’s Chloe portrayal was so on the mark!

Allison, yo– Happy Birthday, and “thanks for the memories” for sure.

Nazis were evil, but communists were more evil. During WW II died 55 milions people (most of them were not killed by nazis). During communist revolution died about 100 milions people. Mao, Stalin, Lenin were more brutal than Hitler.

    Hey guys,

been reading a couple of articles written by Allison on the Huffington Post. As a result I thought I would share a link to a blog entry by another strong, inspirational, compassionate, talented and beautiful actress and humanitarian Ashley Judd, which touches on many similar themes Allison has recently written …

Having just found this site a few days ago, I am thrilled to be “seeing” a little bit of Allison Mack and her thoughts/opinions. Always my favorite character on Smallville, it is a pleasure to know that equality, intelligence and general goodwill towards life is so prevalent in her public persona. It rings true and beautiful. Looking forward to keeping an ear out to see what is next-
