Ask3Journey Round 2

Robin asked:
Is art a reflection of the society of it’s day, or inspiration of what it could be?

Allison said:
What an awesome question Robin. I think it is both. I now, it sounds like a bit of a cop out answer doesn’t it? But I feel it is a very similar question to the chicken and the egg. I don’t know if  we can ever determine what comes first. However, I do believe it is the responsibility of the artist to understand and recognize the effect the work they produce has on the world.

Where in an average day when I am not working, I personally see and effect maybe 25 people on a busy day. When I am working, I personally relate to about 6 million. This is heavy, 6 million people look at what my character says every week and take stock, are effected. I don’t think about this all that often, however it is a huge deal. I feel that the arts hold the beliefs of the general population in place. I believe they not only reflect, but perpetuate any thoughts or ideas we hold in place. The arts solidify, crystalize and and embalm our society. Art is spectacular. It is our essence in tangible form. We show our insides outside ourselves with what we create, what we take the time to think about long enough the we can actually put it out in the world as a symbol of our own thoughts.
Ok, enough rambling for now.

nkc asked:
Is there anything weird you did as a kid that you still do?

Allison said:
Make up dances, plays, and stories with my best friend Jenny in our living rooms.

Ruthie asked:
What legacy would you like to leave…how do you want to be remembered?

Allison said:
Wow, getting right into it I guess? I want to be remembered as something I feel so far away from currently. I want to be remembered as a woman of love and strength. I want to be remembered as someone who inspired ideas and expression. Someone who was passionate about life and art and friends and family. I want to be remembered for telling epic stories in my own way. Stories that influence and inspire society. I want to be remembered as someone who can be counted on to bring joy to the situations I choose to participate. I want to be a woman of peace and compassion. A woman who means what she says and says what she means. A woman of integrity and depth. I have so much work to do, but I think that is the process of life. Building ourselves to be the ultimate person we can be. Paying attention to the moments we have and filling them with as much of us as possible. Quietly, presently, alive.

Volley! Allison asks everyone:

  1. What is your Black Swan moment? A Black Swan moment is a moment in time when you knew your life would change forever. When you never knew it was possible to have a swan any other color than white and a black one appears in front of you one day and you entire life is changed.
  2. If you had a time machine and could go back and say something you wish you had said, but will never have the chance to say, what would it be and to whom?
  3. What is your favorite childhood memory?

The alternative to getting older is not getting any older … and the only way to do that is to die.

    Silvia,

That’s “Not looking older.” There is also “Not feeling older.” But the clock still ticks no matter how old you look or feel.

  • http://www.daybow.com David Hayes

Here’s something I’ve gotten a little sensitive to. I was waiting for it. I heard a news promo that someone has formed a group to help promote the work of young white men. That group is being protested because it reminds people of “white supremacist groups.” There is a feeling that young white males get all the opportunities and that they shouldn’t have a group to belong to that excludes others not like themselves. But I have heard more and more about groups to focus on promoting the work of women, young women, young people, people of every race (except Caucasian), …. Even species of animals have groups to protect and promote their continued existence. My step-son was broke and needed surgery and, as a young white male, was told that he was specifically excluded from getting any financial help to get surgery. Right now, we still see people struggling for equality under the law and fairness, but my question is, when will we evolve to the point that we see that making groups that exclude others by age or gender or race divides people into “us” and “them” ??

During President Obama’s 100 day status report, someone asked what Obama was specifically doing to help Black Americas because the Black community was specifically very hard hit by the current economic crisis. President Obama said that he did nothing to specifically help anyone based upon race or any other criteria other than need. If the Black community or any other community was hit harder by the economy than another group, they would also be helped more NOT based upon their race or gender or age, but by the fact that they needed help more. BRAVO!

So I understand that if someone has a particular interest that has to do with helping a specific segment of the population, the freedom we have in many democratic countries allows us to do that. But doesn’t drawing those lines to include and exclude make us part of the problem we are (or should be?) striving to get beyond? So, if someone decides that they want only young people in their group, that says that older people have less creative ideas than the young or are less physically able than the young. On average, that may be true … and it may not be. But if we look at the individuals, there are definitely some people who are 50 and fitter than some people who are 20 and some people who are more creative at 80 than some people are at 16. To exclude people by age group or gender is just as discrimination as exclusion by race or religious beliefs.

I remember an argument that Abraham Lincoln had against slavery. When Lincoln asked why Whites should have the right to enslave Blacks, one answer he was given was that people with lighter skin were superior to people with darker skin. Lincoln said that if you assumed that was true, would you willingly allow yourself to be enslaved by the first person you met with skin lighter than yours? Another answer was that Whites had superior intellects to Blacks. Lincoln answered again that if you assume that to be true, would you willingly allow yourself to be enslaved by the first person you met that was smarter than you are? Another response given Lincoln was that Whites were morally superior to Blacks. Lincoln countered with, assuming that was true, would you willingly allow yourself to be enslaved by someone with a more thorough knowledge of the scripture than you?

So there are people who need a muse, people who need financial help, people who need opportunities … and those needs are not necessarily dictated by their age, race, gender, hair color, body type or zodiac sign. If you give the opportunities to those that have the most deserving ideas, the help to those who need it most, the education on becoming fulfilled to those who need the most encouragement …. those people with disproportionate needs or talents or potential will get what they need without any reason to focus on a particular group.

So the question is, what are your thoughts on targeting people by age or gender or both when offering people opportunities in the arts?

  • Rimi

Why did you choose to play Chloe Sullivan on Smallville?
