In response to the video above:

Dear Joss Whedon,

First off, thank you for this speech.

In playing a strong female character for 10 years on Smallville, I never realized how fortunate I was to not play someone’s arm candy. That was until I got back into the auditioning circuit.

Many people are asking me why I’m not working. It has now been 1 year since I last set foot on a film set.

Well, the answer is simple: There are very few writers like you (Joss) in this industry. A “strong woman role” or a “strong female story” is still considered a genre in the film industry – anything but mainstream.

The female hero should have strength, wisdom, compassion and integrity. I am no longer ok with portraying anything that degrades or erodes this type of woman.

So I will wait patiently…(maybe even try writing a little) until I get the next, “strong female character” I can sink my teeth into.

Thanks again, Joss. I agree wholeheartedly with what you said.

Until this issue is no longer something we single out in press junket, we are pretending to be further along than we are.

Good for you, Allison! I’m really happy that you are standing up for what you believe in and not compromising your beliefs and integrity by taking any role out there. It’s a shame that strong female roles are such a rarity in Hollywood. Writing is a wonderful next venture because the industry also needs female writers to bring about well rounded female characters. Regardless of where your career takes you, I’m sure you will do great things! 🙂

I agree, the reson why I enjoyed and became a loyal viewer of Smallville was the character of Chole Sullivan. She was a very strong, intellegent, loyal, ambitious women and most important she had integrity. Allison, I have no doubt that Chloe Sullivan is a mirror image of the type of women that you are, I also hope to see you once again playing a character that will bring out these great qualities in you. Lots of luck and love a loyal fan.

Love that you’re standing up for your convictions, and I hope you find a meaty interesting role to sink your teeth into soon. I don’t know whether you want to make movies or go back to television, but lately I feel that TV is the best vehicle for actresses who want to play strong female characters, and the chance for them to be MORE than just that. I love movies, but I feel like as a woman, my only choices to see myself in the characters are romantic comedies. On the flip side, I look at TV shows like Homeland, Parenthood, American Horror Story, Good Wife, and I see so many different complex women, it gives me hope at least one side of this industry is finally realizing that it CAN portray all kinds of women, not just the “arm candy”, as you said. Anywho. Thanks for posting the video, and for your words on the topic. Really eye-opening.

Well said Allison! I watched you for years on Smallville and I never thought…”Oh wow…a female portrayed as real!” It was just Chloe. And I admired her. However, when a female is portrayed as weak or objectified I’m disgusted and distracted from any value the story might have otherwise offered. There’s honor in waiting for the right role. You’re an inspiration for females in all walks of life!! <3

Loved it. Though I might be biased as I’m definitely a slight-worshipper of Joss Whedon. Loved the character of Chloe, and would love to see you on tv again, but I have alot of respect that you’re waiting for the right role. You are a very good role model for females everywhere 🙂

Nice, Allison. Joss is the reason I joined Equality Now as a monthly contributor – as a matter of fact, I came to your blog from a link at, a Weblog devoted to Joss, his work, and colleagues. Check it out sometime. I hope he sees this because I think you did a great job on Smallville; I’m thinking Agents of Shield or whatever he does next.

Most definitely Allison 🙂 I am thankful as well that you are waiting for the right part to play. On Smallville, you were a strong voice of reason to many about you. A character with integrity. A natural Team Leader (Watchtower). A person that would always be there for her friends, and do what is right. On the other show I saw, once, in the one scene that you were in, I saw how they (the producers/director) were under utilizing the seasoned talent that was in their midst.
I am so glad you are strong and stand for what you believe in. Bravo! Honestly In regards to that show, and that one scene, I would have loved to have seen a “blur” 😉 come thru and knock a “dog” across the room….. I’m quite sure they will not last 10 seasons. Anyway….. keep on doing what you are doing, because you are an inspiration to many. Keep on being who you are, keep on growing, keep on learning. Keep on being….. Allison.
