“You do not have to be good.”

A bold openeing statement … So is it OK to be ‘bad’ – presumably ‘evil’ – then?

“The wild geese … are heading home again.”

Or is all that is required of us a desire to return “home again” (whatever, or wherever, that ‘home’ is), to rejoin “the family of things” (whatever, or wherever, that ‘family’ is)?

3tesla, does “You do not have to be…” = “It’s okay to be [assumed opposing force]”? Doesn’t seem equivalent to me. It just seems to imply that being either is simply a choice.

I was not implying any equivalence, but negating any need to be ‘good’ introduces permission to be the opposite. In reality, as humans, we probably manage to be both ‘good’ and its opposite several times during each day. I believe that we have a moral imperative to strive for goodness in all things, but that we will all fail frequently, and sometimes deeply, in this. The key, then, is probably to remain willing to forgive each other as and when the need arises. That is probably the highest, and most gracious, good that can be achieved. So in summary: I agree that one does not have to be good, but that one should, at least, try!

Hey, Mary, this sounds like music in my ears – but who are you to tell us how to be and what to do?
Nature is a wild place, neither good nor bad, just instincts rewarding us with feeling happy if we follow them,
like society has its rewards if we follow its rules. Nature is wise and nature is cruel, nature is full of promise and now,
never planning for tomorrow, always casting dice about who is to live and who is to die.
True, acting out of love and in accordance with our heart feels more rewarding than acting out of a sense of duty
    – but consider reason before you follow the temptation of a siren’s song, happy today, crushed tomorrow.

    Wake Up
    Somethin’ filled up
    my heart with nothin’,
someone told me not to cry.

    But now that I’m older,
    my heart’s colder,
and I can see that it’s a lie.

    Children wake up,
    hold your mistake up,
before they turn the summer into dust.

If the children don’t grow up,
our bodies get bigger but our hearts get torn up.
We’re just a million little god’s causin rain storms turnin’ every good thing to rust.

I guess we’ll just have to adjust.

With my lighnin’ bolts a glowin’
I can see where I am goin’ to be
when the reaper he reaches and touches my hand.

With my lighnin’ bolts a glowin’
I can see where I am goin’
With my lighnin’ bolts a glowin’
    I can see where I am go-goin’

    You better look out below!

    Algo encheu
    Meu coração com nada
Alguém me avisou pra não chorar

Eu posso ver aonde estou indo
Quando o ceifeiro, ele alcança e toca minha mão.

    Com meus disparos de brilhos
Eu posso ver aonde estou indo
    Com meus disparos de brilhos
Eu posso ver onde estou indo

É melhor você olhar pra baixo!

Did you write this, or was it written by somebody else?
It is sad, but there is at least some truth in it.
